&emsp;Tomorrow, December 22nd, is Fuuka Yamagishi's birthday, and she is currently lying awake in bed, staring at the ceiling. She really should be getting some sleep, tomorrow is also the last day of the semester and she'll want to be well-rested... but the fact that the days line up happen to prove a significant distraction for her.

&emsp;How long has it been since her birthday was something to be celebrated? There was a time when it was still something to be happy about, but over time... It started to feel like an obligation her parents were annoyed to have to put up with until eventually they stopped acknowledging it at all.

&emsp;Is it selfish, to want to be acknowledged and celebrated, even for only a day? It's something she couldn't help but start thinking about, and the conclusion she came to at the time was...

&emsp;Yes, it was.

&emsp;It was clearly just a bother. Maybe once upon a time there was time for that, but they got busier and she got older. It's fine and natural for that to happen. She doesn't need to cling to that scrap of attention. But... Lately, things have been changing for her. She has friends now, people who care about her. And being surrounded by people who want to be around her, or at least appreciate that she's here... It's made her think about that all over again.

&emsp;And now that she's thought about that, she starts to wonder. Will her parents even say anything, tomorrow? A phone call, or even a simple text... She's torn. It's complicated. On one hand, she's afraid of what they might say... but in the other, the thought that they might forget - or, even worse, not care - is... stressful. Even if she's gotten used to... the way things are between them now, she can't help but still want that acknowledgement. To want ''something''. She feels kind of pathetic for that.

&emsp;Fuuka rolls over in bed, looking into the round, black eyes of the plush sika deer she picked up during SEES' trip to Yakushima. She reaches over to it, running a hand over its soft head. That trip may have been... tense in a lot of ways, for all the difficult, troubling things they learned, but they had a good time there, too, and even made a new friend.

&emsp;Sometimes it helps to have a physical reminder of that time, to remind her that it was all real.

&emsp;Fuuka rolls back over, staring at the ceiling again. She sighs, and closes her eyes for a moment... and then she hears a buzz as a notification on her phone - currently silenced - goes off. Fuuka freezes for a moment.

&emsp;...Is it her parents? They wouldn't be texting her at ''this'' time of night, would they. She wrestles with herself for a moment - and then when it goes off again, she reaches out to take it with some trepidation.

&emsp;The messages, perhaps the ''exact opposite'' of the tone Fuuka was expecting, get a surprised snort of a laugh out of her and she covers her mouth immediately. Natsuki... Something must be keeping her up late, too.

A fragment of something else entirely, the boy has some form of connection to the masked EDM artist, 'Gin,' whom is said to have died in the Club Harai Fire in the fall of 2012. The late artist's mind-bending messaging of counterculture and supreme Japanese restoration is a ideological mausoleum surrounding the boy, and more oft than not he is haunted by the idea of 'synthesis' and his own eerie understanding of the dead artist's legend. His possession of a old prop of Gin's labels him as a true superfan, but rumors of ancient connections to the darkest occult in Sumaru linger around the boy like old ghosts. Even now, the extent of the influence he wields is not well understood by the waking world, leaving him to struggle with vacuous gaps in his memory aided by the shadows alone, a boy lost in the heartless rave.
			\|Background=The boy known as Shiryuu is a studied creature of many faces. For most, he is only a face in the crowd -- unimportant, nondescript, studious, quiet. It is really only when one stands in his path that he begins to become 'someone' at all, and when he does, he is swift and terrible. Who then, would really know anything of the bloody events that brought him to Sumaru?

			* He's been seen working at the reconstruction worksite for Club Harai in Sumaru, though his work is mostly menial labor. He appeared shortly after the explosion there that claimed the life of well known club artist 'Gin.' That does not stop them from making fun of him for the flirty girl that visited the worksite once. The boss told him to stop causing a stir.

Shujin Academy is split between its main classroom building, which faces the
back streets of Aoyama-Itchome, and its practice building out back. The
classroom building is a grim concrete building with sleek glass doors, three
stories tall, with classrooms for the third years on the ground floor, second
years on the second, and first years on the top. The faculty office is on the
second, and the student council room and the library on the third. Vending
machines dot the hallways here and there, and the bathrooms are kept clean. Its
front gates are wrought iron with a circular design, and a stylized clock on the
eastern wall informs students just how late they are.

The foyer is lined with glass cases proudly displaying trophies earned by its
top students, and just past them is the school store, though the yakisoba bread
there is almost always sold out. Billboards across the school announce various
articles and notices of interest. Past there, the walls are gray and white, the
floors are wooden, student lockers line the walls, and the sliding classroom
doors sport diamond windows. The classrooms themselves are rather more sober,
with simple desks and chairs for the students and a taller desk at front before
the chalkboard for the teacher. The windows to the outside seem simple, and even
have yellow curtains that can be pulled shut, but are lined in a diamond pattern
to prevent shattering. We wouldn't want our students to escape, now would we?

There is a fenced-in roof, but the door to it displays a sign stating students
aren't allowed. Despite this, it isn't locked, so nothing stops anyone from
hanging out there anyway--at least, not until they get caught. Oddly, there's
also several small planters there too for growing flowers and vegetables.

It's a chilly Thursday afternoon, and the bell rang hours ago. That doesn't mean everyone is gone though. There's clubs, and people staying over to watch the clubs.

Case in point, Shinichi Nagisa, once again on the Lacrosse Club's team, is standing in the breezeway between Classroom Building and Practice Building.

There's a portion of the walk about halfway where it becomes a bricked in alcove with a table and a couple of vending machines.

Right now he's in his track suit, and balanced against the wall with a single arm. Right between him and the wall? A giggling first year girl with a dark bob cut and a ribbon in her hair.

"You were really cool out there during Practice..."

"What a coincidence." He says with a wolfish smile and a certain gleam in his eyes, "You were really cute out there during Practice, I saw you watching."

The girl blushes some, at the implication that she was noticed. "... You wanna head out of here? We could go somewhere nice, just the two of us..."

"A-Ah... well..."

She's hesitating, not because she's not into the idea some, but- it's also moving a little faster than she ever has, and she's trying to figure out whether she wants to go with him or not.

But in the end, it feels like there's only one way this could go...

Though the bells had rung hours ago, Katsuko still lingered within Shujin's halls. Part of it was club attendance - the literature club had just about reached the end of one of their projects, and called for all available hands to make that last push before the semester was out. The other part of it was that she still felt that uneasy presence within the vicinity. It was a teeth-itching, flesh-gnawing thing that left her on edge no matter where in the halls she strode, but that just made it all the more imperative that she keep tabs on it.

It hadn't been hard to piece together who - or, rather, what - the source was. The rumours surrounding Shinichi Nagisa were widespread, and she'd been involved enough with the events surrounding Kazusa's Homunculus that she could confidently put two and two together. The problem, then, was figuring out how to deal with it. She wasn't close to him, nor to any of his friends, and what information she'd finagled out of others was mostly hearsay. Much as she hated to admit it, it was perhaps one of those times where she needed answers straight from the horse's mouth.

Or the wolf's maw, as it were.

She did not have to search far. Whether some first-year had bitten off more than she could chew, or he'd cornered some unfortunate target of his affections, it mattered little. She seemed hesitant, if not outright cautious, and there was every risk that her lashing out as a result could agitate the Homunculus. And the last thing she needed, Katsuko thought, was some shambling monstrosity puppeteering Shinichi's body through the halls. There was far too much chance that it would make him unpredictable and thus liable to interrupt scheming or or reading time.

"Nagisa-san." She said, her voice as sharp and cold as an ice-wreathed dagger. "I thought you were with Fuyuki-san. Have you broken up already?"

"A-Ah...!" The girl stammers, as Katsuko approaches embarrassed at being caught, and an unconcerned Homunculus in Shinichi's skin glances sideways at Katsuko.

"Last I heard, she was still together with her boyfriend. If she wants to be exclusive, then she needs to break up with him first."

He then looks back to the other girl with a smile, "Until then, there's nothing wrong with exploring other options, right?"

This gives the girl some obvious mixed feelings, but at the same time, she seems to still be cautiously on his side, "Right yeah? There's uh- nothing wrong with him, being around other girls if she's still with him."

"Exactly. Same way I wouldn't try to tie you down either." He smirks, "... Unless you wanted to be..."

Now the other girl is a deep red, speechless at the innuendo inherent in the exclusivity. Shinichi now glances back at Katsuko.

"Why are you hanging around here so long after school anyway? Don't you need to rush home to take care of the cripple?" He says, dismissively of Katsuko's presence.

The corner of Katsuko's lip twitched the faintest fraction of an inch, spurred on by consternation at the events unfolding. She'd been banking on shame or awkwardness spoiling the mood between Shinichi and his latest target, but that had clearly failed. Neither seemed to have much shame to speak of, and her remark had done little to sour tension - romantic, lustful, or otherwise - that hung like fog between them. Her mind raced, positing different options for dialogue and branching out his potential responses. She pruned the tree based on her summations, constantly whittling it down in the scant gaps between speech until she could think of something that would resolve the situation.

Katsuko intended to make some pithy remark about how she had fallen for some cheap playboy's ploy, and insinuate that she was expecting far too much of a *thing* that would give far too little, but Shinichi took an axe to the base of that tree when he made his own remark at her. She knew well who he meant by 'cripple,' and despite her conscious mind demanding that she rein herself in and keep from losing her calm, she was still far more human than she was at all comfortable with.

Her gaze grew sharp as a razor's edge and cold as the depths of winter, until ice verged on forming across the surface of her eyes. She grew still, to the point where even the subtle rise and fall of her chest became almost imperceptible. Behind it all, every gear and thought in her mind turned towards biting back, the Homunculus and her plans be damned.
"He can take care of himself." She snapped back, outwardly calm, but in the same way that the frozen surface of Arctic waters could be described as 'calm.' "But you clearly cannot. Are you so desperately lonely that you have to force yourself on women who are without the benefit of experience?" Her head snapped to the girl, fast and sudden as the north wind. "And you. Whether the Homunculus marks a change within Katsuko or not, is not quite clear, it's like she's only on the periphery right now and down his list of concerns to being 'tertiary' at best.

'He can take care of himself.'

"...That's not what I heard."

This monster had to draw from his memories to know that Katsuko's father was badly injured and now disabled in that accident. It's unlikely to make something up from nothing.

Which means, that people around the school have been talking, and he's just forming his own conclusions to what Shinichi Nagisa heard.

Right?

'Are you so desperately lonely...?'

Now he stiffens and stands up straight, peeling his hand away from the wall. "Babe, hate to be the one to break it to you- but I'm not exactly struggling for company..."

Then the girl got berated and- "I- what- my standards aren't- what's wrong with-" She stammers, getting tongue-tied on trying to defend herself.

And Shinichi looked her way. "Why don't you go home while I deal with this? I'll text you later..." He already had her phone number!?

The girl nodded wordlessly twice, then fled, with her head down. Shinichi watches her go for a moment, waiting until she's out of sight, leaving the two of them alone.

Then abruptly, unless Katsuko is lightning fast, she'll find him on top of her, and her right arm being wrenched in the grip of his left hand. "The fuck is your problem?"

His eyes gleamed strangely. "You so fucking miserable from being single and saddled with your cripple of a Dad that you have to inflict it on everyone else around you?"

He looms close to her, being a good deal taller, his build athletic, as he angrily makes a sound akin to a snarl, "Giving everything to someone worthless like that. It's turning you into some ''bitch'' that can only take from the people around her- and give nothing worthwhile back."

The first objective, be it through instinctive guile or mere coincidence, had been achieved. The nameless first year was, for the time being, beyond arm's reach. With any luck, Katsuko hoped, she would come to her senses and decide to focus her attention on someone that wasn't possessed by something masquerading as a human. She had no room for relief, however. At first it was because of rage - cold as ash, rather than some blazing inferno, but all-consuming nevertheless. Then it was when she felt her body thrown about like a ragdoll, her wrist already gripped.

Grim was a shadow - preternaturally fast and quiet, ascending beyond human limits to become some dark and deadly force. Katsuko Yoshinaga was, regrettably, human. She made some token effort and wrenching herself free or gaining some breathing room, but it was clear from the outset that there was no way she could break free of him with brute strength alone. Slowly, subtly, and gently, she drew in a long breath, and used that singular force of will to clear some portion of her mind. Rage still burnt cold, and panic borne of the primal part of her all-too-human mind screamed at her to fight back, but she had to focus.

Time slowed to a crawl, and in a blink, Katsuko focussed on the practical.

The objective was to release herself from Shinichi's grasp. She had no idea what he intended, but there was little chance it was anything good. As brute force had proven to be ineffectual at best, she wracked her mind for other options in the rapidly-dwindling fractions of a heartbeat she had before he acted again. Her bag was to her side, and the stationery in there was sharpened to a point. A brazen attack could distract him - but that would require her reaching in with her free hand. Impractical at best, inviting more danger at worst. Her nails, perhaps? They were sharp enough to scratch a bleeding wound into him. With the right timing, one above his eyes could leak blood into them, and grant her some precious few seconds to escape. But the Homunculus, for all its fumbling with his memories, seemed to Know Shinichi's body well. If he moved faster, it would prove disastrous.

It was to be guile, then. She would have to strike some balance between taunting him enough to distract him, while not inviting further retaliation or sending the Homunculus spiralling out of control. Then there was the small matter of avenging her father's honour. To have attacked him so... Even Katsuko, whose face never twitched further than a fraction of an inch when shifting expression, bore some semblance of a tight frown at that personal attack.

"And what exactly do you 'give' people?" She asked, her voice as still and level as floe. It was a concerted effort to keep it that way. She was in danger, and she knew it. But she had to keep him talking and distracted, if only to find the right moment to lash out or break away. "Enlighten me, Nagisa-san. What has your bravado done for you that you can feel proud of?" It was a stupid question. of course he'd feel proud about his 'conquests.' But any chance to keep him spouting drivel was one she'd take.

If it gave her an opening to put a mark on his face, then all the better.

Indeed, as a monster in human skin, it isn't necessarily stronger, or faster than Shinichi Nagisa. It's just that it isn't bound by the things that would cause most people to hold back.

Most boys wouldn't just ambush a girl without warning. They certainly would be hesitant to lay their hands on them. And even if they did, they'd likely hold back all the same.

This Homunculus has no care about abiding by the limits people set upon themselves for the collective good, even when they're acting poorly.

Then she asks a question of him, and he arches an eyebrow, as if incredulous at the idea of it. Then- he smirks at the next question.

"Haven't you heard? I'm back on the Lacrosse Team, and I'm already outplaying everyone on it. Don't you know what a man is supposed to provide women, hun? Safety, security... is dear ol' Dad so useless that you've forgotten that much?"

He leers at her, "Real men don't just let some dumb bitch like yourself walk up and degrade another woman like that without consequences. They protect them. They teach them the right way to act."

He looks her right in the eyes, and there's an odd- sheen, behind them. As if his eyes would shine in the darkness, like some feline stalker's.

"So here's what you're gonna do. You're gonna apologize to her next time you see her. You're gonna apologize ''to me'' right now for getting up in our business."

A beat.

"And I don't mean just any apology. Down on your knees, forehead to the ground. I want full dogeza. You say you're sorry - and you promise you're gonna act more like a girl ought to from now on. ... You do that, and I'll let you leave."

"I'm sure women feel *very* safe and secure around someone that barges into their locker rooms."
Emotionless as she made every attempt to appear, even she could not keep from letting a sarcastic lilt plague that reply. She'd heard what had happened with Isabeau - it had been hard not to, in fact - and her pride refused to let her simply take that insult to her father without biting back somehow. She wished she could say more, and lay into that Homunculus about what she truly thought about its macho act, but it wasn't just her at risk. Regrettably, she bit her tongue.

She was, however, a little surprised that he managed to keep from mentioning the women he'd somehow managed to convince to spend time with him. An insight into the Homunculus' mind, perhaps? It was a tidbit she'd have to analyse later. Much as she wished to spend time poring over what it had said to her and compare it to every other piece of information she'd collected, the reality of the situation was that he'd made a demand of her. He wanted her not to just feign an apology, but to outright grovel.

It took her every mote of restraint she had not to simply tell him to take his demands and choke on them in the most biting way possible. She deserved to have her vengeance for that, and for all the things he'd said about her father. There was a need in her, deep and cold as a pit, that demanded she take her pound of flesh from him. But time and again, she reminded herself that it was a Homunculus. It wasn't Shinichi. There was no point to any of this without the prospect of usable information, and agitating it would only cause the situation to spiral out of control. Worse, it might kill Shinichi - and having the Homunculus around permanently was a nuisance she could not abide.

The sheen of his eyes met the cold glare of a sheet of ice - she was stoic and impassive against him, no matter how her mind raced. And race it did, all towards finding a solution. Somewhat ironically, it was his demand for submission that allowed her the chance she needed, though not out of placating him. He'd need to let her arm go for it to happen properly. A true dogeza needed proper hand placement, after all. But for her to suddenly acquiesce to dropping down after all that had happened would seem suspicious, she thought. There had to be some measure of resistance, but not enough to truly agitate the Homunculus.

"You're not serious. Do you really expect me to bow just for that?" Katsuko said, injecting just enough of a hiss into her flat tone to sell the illusion. She was not truly rattled, after all. Being assaulted by a man stronger than her, making demands that she submit without question and conform to her place in society, was not something that could affect her at all. No - it was simply a facade. A ruse. An act to lure him into a false sense of security, and not a desperate attempt by her adrenaline-flooded mind to rationalise why her jaw clenched as tight as it did. Besides, outright anger, rather than shock, risked invoking the Homunculus' wrath. Surprise, hesitation, and just a grain of fear, were something she suspected it expected.

There's a very exaggerated eyeroll at her words, "Oh grow up. I stayed just inside the door and behind the wall where I wouldn't see anything. I just went in to teach Fontaine-san a lesson."

There's something smoldering on his expression now, "Every single girl in that room was on my side, that fat dumb Gaijin bitch had been bullying them all for ages and didn't feel like they could do a single thing about it."

His expression is growing more taut, angry, it's a gradual thing as they walk, "It was a man's job to teach her she's not better than anyone else here."

It is interesting, isn't it? Why isn't he mentioning all the girls? Well, perhaps it's because the Homunculus parodies Shinichi as some sort of 'gentleman'.

A hypermasculine 'protector' and 'ally' of women.

Even when his behavior is the opposite, it's what many teenage boys would believe is the right way to act, isn't it? He merely takes it to extremes.

When she started to drop down, his grip did loosen in response some, though remaining present, as if to help guide her to the ground.

However- unless she reacts quite quickly, it grasps back hold of her when she says fearlessly that 'You're not serious. Do you really expect me to bow just for that?'

"Heh." One might think that her show lacking any fear might be intimidating enough. But there is one place wherein Katsuko has miscalculated.

There is not a teenage boy in this country who doesn't think they can't overpower the average teenage girl physically.

That 'Heh.' and the smirk that follows is the only warning Katsuko gets, before his opposite hand whips up, trying to strike her hard across the face with the back of his hand in a jaw-rattling slap.

"Not serious... I want to know." As he tries to hold eye contact after the act, "What part of what I said was a 'joke' to you?"

Shinichi was not the only one primed to move. Readied like a hawk catching the essence of prey on the wind, her muscles were taut, wound like springs as she waited to release them. She feigned submission as best she could, trying to sell him the idea that even if she did not believe in his ideals, could be browbeaten into following them. She lowered herself slowly, swallowing down both her bride and the bile that rose from her stomach, waiting for just the right moment to enact her plan. It was a foolhardy thing that required a man with limits and a woman with far superior athletic traits, but rarely were all the pieces aligned in such a perfect manner.

The moment she was low enough to dart past him, and in the scant few moments that his grip was loose enough for her to wrench herself free, Katsuko seized the opportunity tighter than any predator sinking talons into its hapless target. It hurt, leaving her wrist aching as she leveraged the weight of her entire body to rip herself free. Combined with the awkward angle her arm bent at as she surged past him, there was no denying the jolt of pain that shot through her arm like a bolt. But it was a small price to pay for escape.

The swing hit nothing but the ends of her hair, those raven locks trailing behind her as she darted behind him. She was no match for him athletically - she was a scholar first, and an artist second. But she knew how to run, as any who sighted her in the early morning would attest, and she put every ounce of that experience and stamina into fleeing like the wind. Despite the adrenaline that whipped through her veins, Katsuko did not simply run blindly, however. Her mind raced as her body did, using every spare second she had to her advantage.

He was stronger than her. Katsuko knew that, and thought it a reasonable assumption that he was faster too. Even with the headstart she no doubt had, he would catch her if she simply made for the nearest exit and bolted in a straight line until she was off of school grounds. But if she found safe harbour in a room nearby, then she stood a fighting chance. But where? Dr Maruki's office wasn't close enough. She couldn't be certain Kawakami was even in. Her peers were useless - they would hesitate to step on an ant for fear of getting their shoes dirty. There was no telling which classrooms were open, or even if the teacher inside would be inclined to get involved.

But the staff room... One teacher would be able to turn a blind eye, two could collaborate, but a whole host of them? The expectation to do *something* would surely be there. It was a long shot, but her only one. Her path resolved, Katsuko fled, eyes forward and hand digging through her bag for something sharp.

It never hurt to have a backup plan.

The Homunculus seems startled for a half second as she slips his grasp, and avoids the slap.

It's wise to think he might run after her- indeed, given how angry he seemed, it feels very likely!

But instead, as she takes off running, he yells after her.

"Cowardly bitch!" He barks, clenching his hands at his sides, "You think you can mouth off to a man and avoid taking responsibility for it? Go ahead and run! Run and hide behind your 'Daddy'! You'll still get yours!"

That she got away? That's fine. A Homunculus is a predator.

And it can enjoy the hunt just as much as the toying with its prey that comes after.

Just like with Motojima. He'd do whatever it took to make sure she paid for it before long.

Katsuko had any number of pithy remarks to shoot back at him, and no shortage of venomous ones too. There was little she wanted more than to hold that Homunculus at gunpoint and make it know the full extent of her wrath before executing it for all that it had had the temerity to say and do. But to turn around now just for the chance to taunt something she knew she would kill, one way or another, was unwise at best. Even when practically drowning in adrenaline, Katsuko knew that much. Thus, she kept running.

Only when she came to the staff room did she think to stop, but even then, it was a slow and stumbling motion that ended with her all but falling through the door. Hair messed and sweat beading down her face, she was far from the solemn and dignified girl that her teachers had all grown used to seeing, so it surprised her little when they glanced towards her with a mixture of curiosity and vague worry.
"Yoshinaga-san? Is everything alright?" One asked, polite concern - likely faked, she suspected - set into their words.

Katsuko parted her lips, thinking to tell them in no uncertain terms what Shinichi had been doing. But then a thought occurred to her. Word of his 'exploits' had no doubt already spread like wildfire, with no shortage of eyewitnesses either. There was little chance that, if news had spread through the student body, the faculty was completely unaware. They could not claim ignorance - they were complicit in covering things up, if not outright abetting such actions. She wished she could say the thought was a surprise, but it was Shujin. It'd taken vigilantes to bring Kamoshida to justice... What use was expecting them to deal with Shinichi?

"...I'm fine." She said dismissively. "I just needed to ask for clarification regarding next semester's curriculum."

<poem> It's rather easy to forget the swing of exams, once you've graduated. In another life, Umie would be worrying about university finals in whatever program, field, or general type of college she finally went to.

She'd probably would have accepted Ryuusei Honjou's proposal, and likely still be living with her parents until she and Ryuusei made their union official. Life would be easier, in many ways.

And yet, the very thought of it all fills her with a dread akin to seeing the barrel of Ruin's gun, pointed at her. ...Or the lingering half-remembered memory of hearing Hodai's distorted voice yelling her name, as she tried to pull open the locked doors to the other convention building...
.... as her co-worker, Ren, is right there.

Yet Ren's okay, even going up to talk to Kurou. She'd resolve she'd check with Ren further, to see if Kurou's suspicions of Ren remembering more than he was letting on was correct.

With the cold winter setting in, the doors to the Triple 7 let in their share of appropriately bundled customers, including Umie, in her red turtleneck and white coat, her blonde hair in those usual twin buns.

Looking over the items, she looks up towards the door, half expecting Ren, then looking back down as she compares the prices between the two items in her hands.

Which is why Ren's response is fairly prompt. Once you're finished with tests, you're ready and eager to pay attention to something else. That being said--

There's still two more days of testing, after all, and since Saturday's the last day of the semester, there's no half-day to finish up exams on--they're all crammed into five days instead. Ren's beat.

So when Umie says she wants to talk to them, they consider telling her to wait 'til the weekend. However, they consider that it'd be nice to not have to cook anything tonight, so dropping by the Triple 7 to pick something up for dinner isn't a bad idea.

It's not too long until Ren arrives, wearing a black coat and blue scarf on over his school uniform. They're covering a yawn as they enter, their school bag balanced on their shoulder like usual, and head over to where Umie is comparing prices.

"Hey," they greet her. "What's up?"

They'll browse in a bit. Maybe a tuna salad sandwich would be good...

...nah, Morgana will insist they share. The egg sando's probably the better bet.

Umie waves at Ren using the Chosen Meal: a bento box. "Take your time. I'm in no hurry."

It gives her time to think more on where they can eat. Her first instinct in warmer months would have been a park, but as cold as it is, the underground mall may be better. "Would the Underground Mall work? I'm not about to get you sick on top of tired."

It's Wednesday afternoon, so it'd normally be three days left, Umie. Two years out of school and already you've forgotten... Repressed trauma, much?

Ren smiles at Umie's grumpy fist-cat emoji before tucking their phone away.

Once at the Triple Seven, they end up getting neither an egg sando or a tuna salad, but two of those bento boxes Umie waves at them. What can they say? They're hungry, that looks delicious, and the bentos are apparently on sale right now. A perfect storm. They'll save the second one for lunch tomorrow and buy a canned Earl Green to go with it. (Their favorite drink is still grape Manta, but Minako really turned them on to Earl Green while they were dating. Between that and Kurou, it's nice to have tea every so often.)

"Sounds good to me," they reply. It gets colder in the countryside, so this honestly isn't so bad for them, but they're not eager to spend their winter break sick either. Going somewhere nice and warm sounds like a great idea.

Besides, they might be tired, and they might have had a run-in with a Homunculus yesterday, and exams might be rough (though not too difficult; they're confident they're doing well), but they're still in an overall good mood this week for some mysterious reason.

The Christmas Village is already dismantled--of course it is, it was a one-day event--so the shutters once again cut off the deeper parts of the Underground Mall. However, there are places to sit, even if it's just the stairs leading down into the mall. The two of them will find a spot to eat their dinners.

"So what did you wanna talk about, Akabane-san?" they wonder as they crack open the bento and dig in.

At least Ren seems to be in good enough spirits. Maybe thinking about a date? It *is* that season.

... Would... Shiryuu... want a date, her mind thinks next. Is Shiryuu even aware, is the next question.

Alas, the deeper parts of the underground mall are already shuttered. "The Shujin booth did a pretty good job," Umie comments idly as they walk by the shutters, finding a small out of the way spot to sit down. "I don't take you as the type to volunteer for those sorts of things, but I kept an eye out for you just in case."

There was a whiff of something strange at the Shujin High booth, come to think of it. Umie opens her lips, about to ask, but opts not to. Better to keep things on-topic, rather than give Ren reasons to worry.

'So what did you wanna talk about, Akabane-san?'

Could she really overlook the possibility of Ren playing dumb, now that Kurou's pointed it out? Ren *would* be the kind of person to not let on to things that easily.

"I wanted to thank you for reaching out to Ryouhara-kun. He was worried, after..." She opens her soda and sips, gesturing vaguely outwards. "The things that happened, a few weeks ago."

Setting the drink down, she opens up her bento box and separates her chopsticks. "You don't need to worry about any fees for the costume, either. I'm taking care of it." She picks up a piece of salmon and pops it in her mouth, thoughtfully.

Be strategic, Umie. "Do you... remember much, about that day?" Umie, you already know how he's going to answer this question, what are you doing

Trauma's trauma!

As for dates... maybe, maybe not. That goes for both of them, really.

"Yeah? Cool," Ren replies. Technically speaking, it wasn't a volunteer thing, but that doesn't really matter. They contributed a token amount of effort to preparation, then ditched the day of to go do... something else. They don't regret it in the slightest.

By the time Umie's speaking, Ren's mouth is full. This is in purpose. They have an idea of what she wants to discuss, and they'll have to play it carefully. They're still chewing by the time she asks what they remember, so they have plenty of time to consider what to say next.

> What day?

No. Fully playing dumb would itself be dumb. They were too cognizant at the time, and anyway, Kurou clearly told Umie about how they showed up at the apartment to talk to him.

> Everything.

Haha, no. ''Obviously'' they're not going to cop to that. She'll either realize they're a Persona User and wonder why they've never summoned in front of her, or try to encourage her to become one. No, definitely not this option.

> Not much.

Safe enough. It ought to be about what she expects anyway, and if they're vague, well, of course they're vague if they don't remember much.

Ren swallows. "Not much," they reply. "Some stalker was on a tear after you... It's mostly a blur. I guess there must've been a gas leak or something; sure glad nothing sparked. But the Ryouharas got you to safety--right? I'm pretty sure I remember that much." A beat. "And thanks about the dress. What a waste of a beautiful outfit." They sigh in genuine regret. "Our lives are more important, but damn, I looked good in it."

<poem> Ren's short response causes Umie to stifle a laugh around her bit of rice. Keeping her mouth closed until she takes a sip of her drink (she really should have gone for something warm...) Umie looks at Ren with a cheeky, lopsided grin.

"Good on you," she says, even if she doesn't know at all about what Ren did.

Umie can make assumptions!

What Umie *doesn't* make assumptions about is Ren's timing, and how that bit of food is giving them just enough time to debate what they say next. _What day, indeed_.

She makes a slight face at his answer: it's about what she expected, and one that she's glad he knows to give.

Damn that Akechi, making it seem like Ren being close to awakening was a hidden blessing.

It shouldn't be. Ren Amamiya needs to be able to be a normal high schooler, not someone drawn into the supernatural, especially because of her shortsightedness.

And if Ren *is* hiding something... she can't draw it out, anymore than Kurou could.

So, Umie plays along. "Yes. And... so did Akechi-kun." She takes another bite from her bento, chewing thoughtfully on what to say next.

She could have sworn Ren tried to protect her, and for some reason, she didn't object.

"Yeah, it was a freak accident," she murmurs, softly. "But, the important thing is, it's been resolved. And even if it hadn't..."

Akechi had said to keep the details palatable, and to go from there.

"... You still would've been safe." Literally, as the Joker Cursed would only go after the victims they called the Old Maid on.

At least this means *she* doesn't need to explain what the hell she was doing. Ren doesn't seem scared of her at all, either.

Ren's features soften with fondness when Umie brings up Akechi. "Yeah. I remember talking to him a little afterwards," they say, which lines up with what Akechi told her, because it's true. "But I don't remember exactly what," they add, which is not. "Glad you made it out okay."

It's 'been resolved,' huh. Ren wonders if that guy is getting tortured by the Ryouharas or if Umie stopped that much from happening. They don't try to ask. They can't justify how they'd know to ask, and anyway, they already decided that it was Umie's call to make.

They look over at her when she claims they would've been safe either way. No need to ask a question, though, because they chuckle when she agrees on the outfit. "I'd be up for that." More outfits, that is. They acquired a special sort of starry silk from the Mizunagi, found after they left the place, and once finals are over, they plan on taking it to Peacock Silk to see what they can do with it.

So Umie's memories are fuzzy too, huh. She could be lying, but Ren's inclined to believe her; they're pretty sure she got concussed. "Makes sense, if there was a gas leak," they reply. "That's too bad. I'd have liked to've heard about it too, but Kurou didn't seem to want to get into it."

<poem> "Yeah, he mentioned that he was able to talk to you a little afterwards," Umie admits, with a relieved expression. "It made me feel better, knowing you had that; I remember you being a tough cookie. But what a person does when their adrenaline is kicking in and what they do afterwards... those are two very different things."

'But I don't remember exactly what.' "Akechi-kun's dealt with a lot due to his job, so..." She twirls her chopsticks thoughtfully. "He probably made sure to check you for any signs of injury or shock." She can't help but smile a little herself. "He can be annoying, but... he really pulls through for you when you're in a pinch."

She knows she can tell him anything, and he'd take a rational look over it. So helpful, that Akechi!

As for Hodai?

ha ha ha, it's a very good question (that wasn't asked, thankfully). What exactly *did* happen to Hodai? Between recovering from Hodai's attack and the Mizunagi incident, it's a thread that keeps falling out of Umie's hands.

But surely, Umie thinks, she'll be responsible and look into it, after learning what she has.
Surely... she doesn't feel a dark kind of anger over it.
Surely...

Kurou... so the first name basis is mutual. Umie regards Ren with a soft grin. "He's a sensitive guy, as quiet as he is. Finding people closer to his age that do well with that can be rare; even moreso because he's afraid of something happening to you." She'll admit that much, justifying it with, "He's been through a lot."

She hates how much she sounds like some family member, apologizing for a socially awkward grandson, but Ren deserves to know how she feels.

"You're doing it because you want to, but I'm still thankful that you did. He needs friends like that, instead of feeling like he has to separate himself completely from others."

It's bouncing a little too close to home, despite Umie being the one to cause it.

Pretty dresses, however...

"If you need a chaperone or escort, I can always oblige~" Umie wiggles her fingers at Ren, her eyes turning to merry slits.

She's not entirely sure if it was wearing the dress or wearing the *role* that was more fun for Ren, but as far as she's concerned, it felt like something Ren could enbody.

Like her, and the Dark Hour, with her paper masks.

''He can be annoying, but... he really pulls through for you when you're in a pinch.''

Ren chuckles ever so faintly, ever so fondly, at Umie's description. "Couldn't have said it better myself."

That slight, warm mirth fades when she moves on to Kurou, though. "...Yeah. We've talked a little about it. I know his mom's in jail, and... that's about it. The way he talked about that day, too..." Their eyes narrow. "He doesn't think of the 'normal' world as one where he belongs. I can't even begin to imagine what he's been through."

What it's like to be trained as an unhesitating killer.

They look over at Umie as she continues. "...Yeah. I had that feeling about him, too. He seems... untethered. And," despite all the reasons they shouldn't, "I like him." They look down at their bento. "We feel... similar, somehow."

Similar, and yet so very different.

But a breath of humor returns at Umie's wiggling fingers. "I'll think about it," they say mildly. "It's not something I get too many opportunities to do anyway." Aside of course from shifts at Bar Crossroads, but considering the help needed to put on a kimono, that's a ''commitment''.

For now, though, they resume eating. If she's got more to ask, she'll have to wait for another round of chewing and swallowing. It might be a good time for her to get back to eating, too.

<poem> With how fondly Ren seems to regard Akechi in that moment, there were so many stories Umie wished she could have shared, just to show off those qualities.

... Like the moment Akechi came in with konbini food, and even some ice packs to keep them cool as they lay hidden from the nurses.

However, does she even need to? Ren already knows what he feels, if it's a bond of friendship or something else.

That's between those two, and she's glad for it.

Ren mentioning Kurou's mother being in jail surprises Umie; her chopsticks pause enroute. "Yeah."

The way Ren's eyes narrow-- Umie nods to that as well, a similar sentiment in the slant of her mouth.

The way he spoke of the 'normal' world, like it was the other side of the water's surface, existing in the Dark Hour, conscious in some form, but lacking a Persona...

He was afraid of the same thing happening to Ren, despite his own circumstances being as wholly unique as hers (or was hers unique at all?).

"He's afraid he'll draw you in to something similar, just by being around him," Umie says, carefully, after taking a bite's worth of time to think. "It's easy to get in that mindset-- that something, or someone you like, is better separated from you than with you."

Unthethered. "That's a good word for it." She sorts out some of the dried seaweed, picking it with some grains of rice, and popping it in her mouth.

Her lips smile around the chopsticks as Ren says they like them.

"I do too. And I also see it." Similar, and different. "If you ever come over and I'm around, I'll have to cook for you two sometime. He likes it when we have meals together."

'I'll think about it.' Umie chuckles. "It was fun. That much, I remember."

She starts on some pickled vegetables, the carrot quietly crunching in her mouth.

Silence... it ain't half bad.

"Sounds good to me," Ren says of Umie cooking dinner. "I'll be happy to help out, too. I've been learning a lot myself." And whether they brew some coffee to go with it, or Kurou brews tea, or even both--it'll no doubt be a fun evening.

The Gang Cram Into Para-Mind's Van --

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

So it starts with Yumi catching up with Scion manually, shrieking about how HER ARM IS OFF, being reassured that no mama it's ''fine'' she's ''fine,'' taking her back home through Mementos, ringing Miho, shrieking about how TYKKO'S ARM IS OFF...

Hopefully, Miho's already dropped her own victim off at the collection point by the time that happened. (Funny how Yua and Tyrrha attracting everyone's attention helps other people work, huh?)

But Para-Mind, in hearing the extent of the damage, goes "yeah that's gonna need more than a spanner," and then "well la-di-da, princess, the lab's where all the ''shit'' is," then "nah thanks, I like that bit where it is, look, bring her down --"

And anyway, apparently he can cram an entire mobile mechanic station into the back of his van.

Which is where they're all crammed in right now.

Tyrrha's been put down to low power so she won't ''zap'' the poor guy while he's working, which means she can hold a conversation, but not much more than that. "Huh, cool," she says, as he rewires a section around a big, armoured box in the centre of her chest. "What's that?"

"Magic smoke box," Para-Mind replies, without looking up.

"What's that?" Tyrrha asks.

"Box where the magic smoke lives," Para-Mind clarifies.

"But what's that?" Tyrrha keeps asking.

"Shit where if it escapes you die," Para-Mind concludes.

"You're going to be okay, ''ucha,''" Yua says, from a seat which is thankfully clear enough of tools for her to sit down, even if she's feeling ''slightly'' like a sardine.

"'Course I'm fine!" Tyrrha insists, cheerfully. "Man, I just wish I didn't have to run away... that Joker was soooo cool!"

Miho has indeed already handled the other matter. It was much easier, given the paucity of Persona-users at that location.

She heard about the damage first, naturally. Yua was shrieking, but Miho was very calm in that particular way of hers where she ''sounds'' calm but has a lot more going on underneath the surface. Her arm is off. Is she bleeding? (Does she bleed)? Is she experiencing pain? (She usually doesn't.) Can they fix it? (...Can they fix it ''without'' taking her back to the lab?)

On the other hand, Miho's hearing is pretty good. So there's that.

Now though...

Knock knock. Seiji has brought Miho here, and now...

Miho stands in a suit, having changed out of her armor, and waits for the back door to be opened.

"How are the repairs coming?" she asks.

"Yua, are you all right?"

No -- she doesn't look like it and hasn't ''said'' anything -- CAN THEY?!!?!?!?!?! SHE WAS ONLY BLINDED FOR A MINUTE! JUST A ''MINUTE'' --

Yua, here, is learning the terror every parent learns when they realise just ''how'' few minutes a child needs to put themselves in life-threatening danger. She's barely even changed out of her wedding dress; she's bustled Tyrrha down in the turtleneck and tights she was wearing beneath it.

(There's one of Miho's cloaks hanging over the back of the chair, though. She needed... something to toss over Tyrrha so no one would look at her funny.)

"Get that," Para-Mind says, without looking up, when there's a knock on the door of the van. "Oh, and if it's a meter maid, do me a favour and shoot her?"

"No!" Yua yelps, and the ''shape'' of her alarm is probably audible from outside the door even if the ''contents'' aren't. She needs to take a second to figure out how to stand up in the cramped van, as she says -- "I bet it's Mimi!" -- and then opens the door, to reveal: "See? It's Mimi!"

"Woulda been funny if it was a meter maid," Para-Mind says, fiddling with some wires. "Cram in, close the door, pick a spot, cope."

Yua shuffles back to the seat she'd found, which, at least, is probably still good for ''leaning'' on, even if there's ''stuff'' on all the other seating. "I was watching her," Yua promises, "but then -- then they realised I was transmitting through her antenna, so they broke them, and I wasn't able to reach her and -- and the Joker --"

"She like, split in half right down the middle and tried to EAT ME!" Tyrrha says, and one gets the impression that the only reason she's not bouncing in her seat is because those functions have been depowered for safety. "It was AWESOME!"

So, uh, Tyrrha's fine, apparently.

At least Para-Mind is hard at work. ...Right?

It is indeed Miho though. "Hello," Miho greets after a moment. "Sure." She doesn't appreciate brusqueness but she does appreciate directness, so it is good enough. Yua is there... and Miho picks a spot near her. Yua promises she was watching, but--

"I see. We'll have to prepare countermeasures for that..." For going for the antennae. But--

"I'm glad you had fun," Miho says, "But you should understand that significant damage to you is distressing for us; it could end your life." That seems to be inherently bad, to Miho, so she doesn't explain it further.

Hard at work, or hardly working, am I right, fellas?

"Hi," Para-Mind says, in response to that greeting, "I'm the guy who's NOT taking you down to the sexual harassment station when you goddamn ''totalled your unit.'' I take payment in cash and political favours."

"Huh?" Tyrrha asks, recalling that thing Yukari said about ignorance for a moment.

"I-it's nothing, sweetie," Yua smiles, to her. "He's just kidding, right?"

"Yeah, yeah," Para-Mind grouses, digging around in there.

The reason why Tyrrha might be so blithe with her secrets might be revealed a little more... if this was one of the guys working on her. If Tyrrha didn't pick up on the ''nuances'' of speaking truth to power, she sure could just end up on ''speaking truth,'' huh?

Apparently he's kind of put-upon having to fix something this extensive in his van... but he's at least ''doing'' it, right?

Yua reaches up, to take Miho's hand, as she warns Tyrrha, who -- well, she ''doesn't'' actually look at her, those autonomic systems are all down, she's doing a passive environment scan for inputs right now, but Miho can ''imagine'' she would be. "What, you guys... don't like that? But like, it wasn't a big deal the first five times..."

"It is a big deal!" Yua insists, and ''she'' sounds upset, though she's -- ''trying'' to keep on top of it all. "Those girls... I'm really sad they didn't survive! And, and I really want you to be okay, Tykko!"

"Huh... but I don't feel like I was gonna die," Tyrrha says, sounding a touch baffled about it all. "It's just like, 'critical damage to 6BD sectors, severe damage to 11A sectors...' ... that's not a big deal, right? If I get broken, you guys can just fix me right up!"

"Tell me more about how easy this is," Para-Mind says, dryly, as he does something which is decidedly ''not'' simple. "Actually, no, you kids are in exams now, right? Gimme a ten-page essay on how awesome I am figuring out this bus duct after you got half of it ripped apart."

"Like, right now?" Tyrrha asks.

"Sure, why not," Para-Mind says.

"Okie-dokie," Tyrrha says, only to pause. "... uhhh, I can't move my hand."

"Sounds like a you problem." Para-Mind's still working. "Tried not getting bit in half about it?"

"Not yet!" Tyrrha says, cheerfully.

Yua, watching this banter with growing concern, tugs at Miho's hand. "Mimi, tell her," she says, a touch whining.

"Very well," Miho agrees. "I have fifty thousand yen on-hand. Will that suffice?"

She doesn't seem to take issue with hearing it. Instead, she just goes with it. And well...

There's Para-Mind.

"We don't like that," Miho confirms, though she waits for the rest of them to keep up and speak of it for now. Those 'girls'... the first five times. It is useful data, to know that Tyrrha is the sixth, for instance.

"How would you know how it felt if you were about to die?" Miho wonders. "Have you experienced it previously?"

It's a risky question, but an important one. Miho thinks so, anyway. But the essay...

"You get the essay ''or'' the yen," Miho responds dryly. Then she grows more serious. "Yes, though. It is important to us that you in particular survive--you, not merely one like you."

"But I do recommend avoiding having your arm bitten off in the future. See how it distresses Yua; it also distresses me." She doesn't sound distressed. But she is!

"We can... ''mostly'' fix you, if you are broken. But sufficient damage would render that impossible, and I do not know precisely how much damage that would be. I assume it would be damage to your 'core'--so protect that."

"On-hand? Christ. You people have too much money, taking that off your hands is basically public service. Call me Robin Hood, 'cuz I'm stealing from the rich and giving to myself."

Para-Mind knows not whomst he invokes, with that kind of casual banter...

"Not me," Tyrrha confirms. (She does not realise, in her confirmation, that she's underlining her demon-nature; an individual demon ''can'' be killed, and that demon will be dead henceforth, though a dozen more may take their place.) "But I guess, like... my sisters and brothers got got before I did? Uh, I don't know if I've ever almost died... except for when I melted down a couple days back?"

"Damn," Para-Mind clicks his tongue, when Miho makes her stipulations. "You drive a hard bargain, Ijuuin." Is he talking about her like he's addressing the ''whole class of Ijuuins?'' He just might be.

"Like... me specifically? Even though they'd just make another one...?" Tyrrha ''would'' have tilted her head if she ''could.'' "Huh... you don't look sad," she points out, which must mean she ''does'' have visual scanning capacity despite her cameras not zeroing in on Miho. (You know. Her eyes.) "How come you're not making a face like Yumama is?"

Yumama's face, as it happens, is a bit teary and all wibbly and ''plainly'' upset.

"Oh, yeah, that thing," she says, and here, again, she ''would'' look down at herself but she ''can't.'' "Magic smoke thingum. Yeah, I remember... I did kinda pull back to keep that one free. Is it because I'd 'die' if it got bit?"

"Pre' much," Para-Mind confirms, as he tinkers.

"How did you even escape?" Yua asks, her voice tight. "There was -- I was distracted from looking to you with my own eyes --" Tatsuya found her, she means.

"Oh, that was easy!" Tyrrha would grin, if she ''could.'' "There's this thing buried in my base code, down in root, like, under a bunch of updates, it's like -- down in wordplay, there's a folder for ''puns,'' and that's got ''puns for every occasion''... so I just said, 'looks like I've been disarmed', and they were so shocked by my razor wit that I was able to get away scot free!" She pauses, for a moment. "Well, shocked by my razor wit and Mazio."

"Ah," Yua smiles, deeply concerned, "Tykko..."

"I will not call you Robin Hood."

That is all she says about that. Her sisters and brothers who got got, though... hmmm. "Yes, that would count," Miho says. "That is the level of distress we hold."

But no essay. Miho Ijuuin nods.

"That is correct," Miho says, even though they'd make another one. And so she does have scanning capacity. "I do not share my emotions as freely as Yua does," Miho explains simply. "I prefer to keep them inside--to myself--where I can deal with them as I choose."

Miho squeezes Yua's hand.

Magic smoke thingum. "Para-Mind is almost certainly correct," Miho says. "I would listen to him in this matter."

Yua asks... and Miho strokes Yua's arm.

"..."

Miho does not think it was the wordplay.

"That you escaped--and can escape--is important. Remember, should you suffer damage to that degree again, you ''must'' escape. Your priorities must include protecting your own life as well as Yua's. ...Because she would suffer if you died. Because we value you."

"Huh... that's a lot, huh?" Tyrrha asks, as if she doesn't ''know.''

(She really might not know.)

She tilts her head, hearing how Miho deals with ''her'' emotions. "So if I took you apart," she asks, "would I find them? I don't know if I wanna do that... I'm pretty sure if you lose all your blood ''you'' die. I think that's probably bad? Hey, how come you lock your feelins' up inside when it's Yumama who got took apart, anyway?"

"That's why, ''ucha,''" Yua says, sadly. "Even if I wanted to, I couldn't hide... besides, I've always been more expressive. Things are simpler without a legacy like Mimi's, you know?"

"I'm always right," Para-Mind says. "Check the bumper sticker, babe."

The bumper sticker, out there, says 'THE SYSADMIN IS ALWAYS RIGHT.'

"Huh... okay, so... yeah, that makes sense," Tyrrha says, thoughtfully, when Miho says she ''has to protect herself.'' "Like, I have the flags tellin' me to retreat when I got damage to too many sectors... so that's why they're like that, huh? Is that this whole 'self-preservation' thing you were talkin' about?"

This is, assuredly, ''not'' the first conversation Miho and Tyrrha have had about personal safety, judging by the way Yua nods and hums an affirmative "mm, mm!"

"No," Miho says, with a shake of her head. "Emotions and thoughts... they dwell within the 'mind', which is of a different substance from the body. You could take my body apart and you would never find my mind again, for it would be gone."

That's not disturbing, right Yua?

"...I have my reasons," Miho says. "My feelings are... difficult to deal with," she says. "So I must keep them at remove. It is similar to how when you have a big problem before you, you must stop to think how to solve it, rather than doing so by rote."

But Para-Mind is always right. Miho lifts an eyebrow.

Still...

"Yes," Miho says. "Self-preservation is indeed understanding when you are in a position to die--and working to abate that situation." A pause. "There are things worth giving one's life for," she says. "The defense of one you love, for instance. ...but it is your duty to 'keep' that life safe, absent such a situation. You cannot spend it freely, unwisely, for you belong to more than yourself."

"That is a part of 'honor'."

"Huh." Tyrrha says. "So... it's, uh..."

"Magic smoke box for humans," Para-Mind interjects, helpfully(?).

"Huh... so you guys have one of those, too?" Tyrrha sounds quite interested! "But then, like... how do you take someone's mind apart if it leaks out when you open up their body?"

"That's called interrogation," Yua says, quietly. "We can... teach you some things later, okay?" ... well, ''Miho'' can teach her some things. Yua's only real skill in this field is having withstood so much of it.

(There's a lot disturbing about all this, Yua thinks.)

"Oh, so, like... you're scared of your feelings?" That's what Tyrrha gets out of what Miho's saying, with ''zero'' tact. "That sucks. Feelings are great! I love havin' feelings! Sometimes other people don't like me havin' feelings though," she adds, thoughtfully. "They act like I'm havin' the ''wrong'' feelings. I don't get it. How can feelings be wrong?"

"Well, it's complicated," Yua says, diplomatically. "Sometimes, feelings which trangress social boundaries can make people uncomfortable... and those boundaries can be different for different sorts of people."

"Ohhhh," Tyrrha says. "So there's ''rules'' and junk. Okay, yeah, I get rules and junk. So what's the rules?"

"Er," Yua blinks, as she realises something, all a sudden. "I... think I've been asking that for a long time..."

Luckily, Miho already knows a thing or two about ''telling Tyrrha the rules,'' as she tells her about the rule of ''staying alive.'' "Oh, so... since it's something you can only do once, you can't just do it casually, right? Even though there'll be other people just like you afterwards... but I guess there's somethin' about 'me' that you guys care about? Magic smoke box for humans. Para-Mind is helpful, sometimes. Like now!

"To affect the mind, one uses different tools," Miho answers. "It can be affected by the body, but only indirectly. I'll explain more depth to you later," she says. "But for instance, the words I'm using now are impacting your mind; words are a strong way of affecting the minds of yourself and others."

A pause. "...Yes," Miho allows after a moment. "My feelings are great and sometimes monstrous. ...I must grapple with them as one would a powerful enemy sometimes--or as one must care for a valued ally. It is... difficult, sometimes."

"The ''expression'' of your feelings can be appropriate or inappropriate," Miho says. "'Wrong' feelings... are complex. It's not so easy to explain. More often it's 'expression' that does it."

There are rules.

"The rules are many and complex. It is like combat; one cannot simply explain it. One has to experience and train in it."

And there..

"That's correct. You can only give your life once. It must be done carefully, deliberately, never casually."

"Practice as hard as you can," Miho encourages. "...I am not completely immune to emotional expression; I would shed tears, if you were to die. ...But if you are lucky, you will never see that become necessary."

"Ohhhh," Tyrrha says. "So it's takin' them apart ''invisible-like''... like magic!"

"Even more invisible than magic!" Yua enthuses, because, of course, Balzac ''is'' visible to the human eye.

But Miho speaks to her monstrous feelings, and one gets the impression ''here,'' too, that Tyrrha would cock her head if she wasn't presently running on shoestring power. (Even a shutdown, on Tyrrha, isn't a true ''shut down.'' What happens, to her, when someone turns the machine off...? Well, they figured ''that'' out with an ''earlier'' version.) "Sooo... Mimama's communin' with the Dragon Lines 'cuz you're a dragon mama?" ''That's'' what she got out of that?! "So does that mean you're both dragons, or..."

"Ah --" Yua's serious expression breaks into a smile, despite the weight she knows her court wife's words to carry, as she looks up to Miho. (She knows the weight of Miho's feelings, of course, because she's the woman privileged to help ''carry'' them; just as Miho protects her out in the world, it's Yua's role to safeguard her feelings in the ''home.'') "Well, how about it? Are we 'Dragon Mamas'? Oh, but don't worry," she adds, to Tyrrha, smiling. "We're bound by our customs, so even if we were dragons, we wouldn't just rampage indiscriminately, okay?" That's another story built into Shiisaa's mythology, after all: the rampaging sea dragon brought low by the roar of a Shiisaa figurine.

Miho may realise she should consider her words carefully... this is an important decision.

"Oh, I thought there was like, a book or somethin'... like that Heihou Kadensho, or Hakagure, or Bansenshuukai!" Of ''course'' she's been given that kind of reading list, samurai treatises on battle and philosophy. "But... there's stuff you can't write down, huh? Like, it's easy for people to write, like, about aggressive and passive modes and stuff," as the Heihou Kadensho discusses methods of engagement in a battle, "but... how do you actually reach out and hit a guy? I'm still kinda puzzlin' that one out."

... loading weapons onto Tyrrha's make and model have proven largely disasterous, because holding the capacity to strike in her own two hands reminds her too much of the power she ought to hold. That functionality ''is'' technically in her system... but it's still ''quite'' buggy.

"It's okay," Yua assures her, gently. "It's hard for me, too..."

(When Miho finds a moment to speak to Para-Mind ''without'' Tyrrha listening in, about the observational unit which is also Tyrrha's weapons platform, she'll discover that there's a ''toggle switch'' hidden in his mane which governs whether it transmits observational data. What? No one told her about that?? Man, sucks to be her, better hope she wasn't banging her wife when that thing was watching. ''Removing'' the uplink entirely is more complicated, though... too bad Tyrrha probably shouldn't witness the verbal battle it takes to convince him it's funnier to help them than to rat them out.)

That's later, though. Now --

Now, Tyrrha is once more thwarted by the inability to cock her head like a confused creature. "That's gotta mean it's the ''most'' powerful, right?" She asks, instead. "Is that, like... how they were sayin' how livin' without achievin' your aim is cowardly?" 'Bushido,' the Hakagure dictates, 'is realised in the presence of death.' It's not just Yua who's meditated on it, apparently.

There's a lacuna of silence, though, as Tyrrha processes what Miho's saying.

"... uh... but if I'm dead, how would I see you cryin' anyway?" She asks, at length. "I thought, like... when you died, you couldn't see anything any more."

"That's true," Yua says, softly. "But I would see it... and Mimi would see me weeping, too. Even when you die, you leave people behind, ''ucha.'' Being able to imagine what they would feel is an important skill... but don't worry if it's hard, okay? You don't need to be good at it all at once. It's better to improve yourself slowly!"

Even more invisible than magic...

A dragon mama. Hmmm. Miho considers this for a moment. She looks to Yua, in turn. Communing...

"Yes," Miho decides. "We are."

She could be a dragon. That would be fine. ...A dragon, rampaging through what is in her way... When it is time, at least. Yes...

"I aspire to it."

They are indeed bound by their customs. And then--a book.

"Exactly," Miho says. "You can write many things about socializing, many guides that could help you.. but in the end, it is the doing of the thing that teaches."

Miho's not going to put weapons in her hands. Not now, anyway.

"...But it is better to make use of tools in combat."

Miho will definitely talk to para-Mind about that. She won't even complain at him. Probably. But now...

"Yes," Miho says. "That is what they say. ...But you need not act on that now. Meditate on it. Consider it."

Pause. "...Perhaps that is so."

"But as Yua says, those left behind will know. It will no longer be your concern... and yet," she says, "It is your concern now."

"It's fine, if it's hard. But in the end..."

"By living with purpose, you will find 'peace' when that time comes."

"Ishigami-san? It's Yua Ijuuin," Yua's voice comes through the phone, later -- once they're back in their penthouse, now her ''feets'' are ''up'' and Welwetes is safely docked and Tyrrha is busily being repaired by Para-Mind. "Is now a good time?"

"Go ahead," Chizuru Ishigami's voice says, smoothly.

"I'll be making my report directly today," Yua says. "Mimi was busy apprehending another target, so... Tykko and I went to catch Maria Sakurai alone, and we were able to do so during one of Lisa Silverman's performances."

"... the girl your woman mentioned," Chizuru notes. "I remember. Go on?"

"Unfortunately, there were a high number of Persona Users present," Yua says, her gaze dropping, as she relates it. "Tykko did her best, Ishigami-san, but... fighting all those people at once might have been okay, but when the Joker attacked her, too, it... ah, it took her arm off."

"They're sinful creatures," Chizuru says, with an air of regret. "Is your daughter all right, Ijuuin-chan?" It's something which has distinguished working at this level, with her fellow mystic, from Yua's experiences with the men below her: Chizuru seems to have ''some'' measure of concern. Those men might have called her Ooshiro-chan, back then; but rather than respecting her efforts to be so deliberately ''cute,'' it was really just more disrespect.

Whether there's a deeper comment as to why she's given ''Yua'' the cute address and Miho the standard respect is beyond the scope of this document.

"Ahaha... she was mostly just annoyed she had to run away," Yua laughs, a little of her tension draining away; ''she'' was horrified, of course, but Tyrrha just insisted that was why the Joker Monsters were the ''best'' fights. "Well, so that was a failure, but... but we had a big success, too! Lisa Silverman has Awakened to her Persona, Eros. I guess it's a lot different to how it was the first time, though... she must have changed a lot this time? Apparently it's not just her, though... even me and Mimi... she told me how in the True World, it was Faust who was the Navigator, and Gretchen was the one protecting them."

"So you switched roles... fascinating. So Silverman-san Awakened, and you retreated after the Joker disabled Tyrrha-san? Is there anything else?"

"Um, the Black Mask stumbled over us... he said it was just a wrong turn, but... w-we really did try our best to complete all objectives!" Yua hurries to assure her. "So if there's any concern over that, ah -- we definitely didn't just let her go! I know it would be bad for us if we didn't really try," she adds, her fear returning, when she remembers Ruin.

"Hmm? If it took a severed arm to dissuade you, I have no complaints," Chizuru assures her, though she still sounds a touch distant about it all. "Was there anything else?"

"Oh -- there was one thing," Yua says, as if it just dawned on her. "The other boy with that staggering potential... Tatsuya Suou? Somehow, even though I'd set up all my mazes, he eventually found me... he knew I was trying to Awaken Silverman-kun, and he wanted to stop me. Um... when he realised I was pregnant, though, he let me go really easily... um, I didn't make a fight out of it or anything, since Tykko had already gotten badly hurt by that point, and, um, my connection was disrupted too. Plus... there's all those reports about how strong he is, and... I'm at twenty-five weeks now, you know...?"

"I don't want you to put yourself in unnecessary danger," Chizuru says. "Avoiding a fight with the Paradox Boy when there was no one to protect you was the right call. All right... I'll review the material. Thank you for your hard work."

"Thank you, Ishigami-san," Yua says, and the phone clicks to silence.

Chizuru looks up, from where she's leant on the back of a lounge -- a lounge where Hisataka Shinjo sits, watching the camera feed Welwetes uploaded.

He nibbles at a potato chip, as he watches the Aqua ball advance on Welwetes' rear camera. It's the sort of casual motion one doesn't expect to see from him at all -- some of the men who serve him have wondered if he deigns to do such things as ''eating'' or ''sleeping'' at all. "Set this to Wyoming Jones music," he says, as the forward camera captures the way the little robo-raptor skids in beneath the chair. Clicking forward --

-- the camera shows how Welwetes went to go fetch a piece of ''broken'' chair for Suzume. "Give whoever programmed it to do this a raise."

"Hmm," Chizuru smiles, gazing down to him with affection. "As you wish."

"There's nothing funnier than seeing the robes of tradition draping on something as modern as a cyborg," Shinjo remarks, as he watches the Joker take Tyrrha's arm ''clean off.'' "'Looks like I'm disarmed'... heh," he ''even chuckles,'' if darkly, and perhaps it's the greatest privilege Chizuru knows to witness him indulging in pursuits he's long left behind.

Perhaps allowing a man such as Shinjo to feel the smallest amusement is why no complaints about Tyrrha's loose lips have made it too far...
