Alts

Focus - A standard protagonist, such as Junpei Iori or Ryuji Sakamoto.

Chorus - A noncombatant character or one who does not participate in combat, such as Kenji Tomochika or Daisuke Nagase.

Nemesis - An antagonist, such as Takaya Sakaki or Tatsuya Sudou.

Feature Character (FC) - A character directly from one of our canon sources, such as Yukari Takeba or Morgana.

Original Character (OC) - A character devised by a player for the game.

Our policy is to allow a total of six combatant alts, of which one must be a Feature Character, one a Nemesis, and one assigned to an Original Theme. In short, you have three 'free' slots', and then three slots that must each satisfy a separate one of the preceding criteria. There is additional availability for one Chorus slot, which does not count against your alts, but will be made to count if they engage in combat or otherwise join the narrative prominently. If a character changes roles in a way which would put you in violation of this alt limit, you must rearrange your characters to be within this policy within 30 days, or we will require you to drop any characters in excess of the policy. One may apply for characters at a maximum frequency of one per week until they hit the limit.

When a Feature Character or theme first opens, there will be a three-day closing period for any approvable applications received for it for six months afterwards to allow people a chance to submit a contesting application. Any contesting apps must be received within that three-day time frame; an app received after the closing period has ended will not be considered. Posts will be made on the MUSH to inform everyone of which FCs are closing and which have become contested. After those six months have passed, FCs will close immediately after an approvable app like any other character.

Our app and request cycle runs from 11:59 PM Eastern Friday (received) to 8 AM Wednesday (responded). In other words, if you get your app in by 11:59 PM EST on Friday, you will receive a response by 8 AM on Wednesday. Wednesday 8 AM is also when passwords are sent out for approved applications, barring any delays due to an app contest and/or closure period. If a closure period takes one past Wednesday, the password will go out as soon as the character closes. If there is an app contest, the password will go out within 24 hours of the character closure to allow time for staff to make a decision on the contest.

Idle Policy

In general we expect a scene per month on most characters, and ideally more--if you don't make the minimum, or if you make only the minimum for an extended period, we may prompt you for activity. This is more important when the character is needed for an active plot, and will be enforced more strictly at those times.

We reserve the right to judge activity based on context, but will always provide at least two weeks' notice before removing a player from a character for idle reasons. However, if a Feature Character isn't logged in for three months, we will consider the character abandoned regardless of warnings. For an Original Character, this period is extended to six months.

Note that staff will be more lenient towards those who give an advance warning and make a vacation post.

FCs and Portrayal

In general, we think players should play their characters as they see fit. However, if a portrayal is actively disruptive to the cast, we reserve the right to intervene. This will begin with discussions; only if there is no other solution will a player be removed from an FC for non-'canon' portrayal. While we obviously cannot tell a player they're playing their OC in a non-'canon' way, we do reserve the right to remove any character--FC or OC--who is proving disruptive to the game as a whole.

NPCs

We encourage the use of NPCs to flesh out your character's story and the world. However, we reserve the right to ask players to app particularly prominent NPCs if they're going to have major effects on the narrative. If you pose an NPC as often as your own character, you should probably app them then too. Staff will mostly be permissive in this matter, but there are limits. Please continue to follow restricted/inappable rules as regards NPCs as well.

Significant use of FC NPCs (such as Koromaru) should be done with permission of staff or the FC to whom they belong, if they do 'belong' to anyone. Yukari is free to pose her mother; Junpei is not free to pose Yukari's mother. However, anybody can pose that Tanaka's on the TV on Sundays.

If you're not sure who an FC NPC 'belongs' to, just check with staff before posing them beyond a cameo matching their portrayal. For instance, you're free to pose that the Old Couple at the bookstore in Iwatodai are at the shop selling books without staff intervention. Working part-time at the same bookstore would merit a request, unlike working part-time at one of the many shops that offer part-time work in canon, because the latter is open to anyone and the former is a small shop implied to have no extra staff.

Inappable/Restricted

Some characters, meanwhile, are restricted or flatly inappable. In the former case, we have criteria to judge whether a given app can go through; in the later case, we simply will not accept applications for those characters or concepts. Restricted concepts include Nonhuman Characters. See that file for rules on demons, hybrids, and other supernatural entities that can follow our rules.

Inappable

Conceptually Inappable:

  • Cyborg Supersoldiers (sorry, Persona 1)
  • Characters of independent, accessible wealth sufficient to solve the plot(s) of the game
  • Actual Demons in Demon form, Demon hybrids, or any supernatural entity that can't fake being human (or animal) for our purposes
  • Gods and other entities of incredible enough power to solve the plot(s) of the game
  • Any version of a character that is specifically from the Persona 2 Innocent Sin timeline (besides Tatsuya Suou)

Appable, But:

This category is for characters that either wield such incredible powers and hold such setting secrets, or are mostly by their very nature mostly NPCs that are partially under control of the staff. While they can be applied for, know that playing them will be an ongoing conversation with the staff.
