(|=========================== Mementos - Entrance ============================|) -====================================================== Tokyo/Shibuya Ward ====- Once you enter Mementos, however you manage it, the world will transform around you. It's subtle at first. Initially, while you remain just before the entrance of what should be Shibuya Station's Underground Mall entrance, there's just a soft, fractal blueness at the edge of your vision. The city itself seems normal, but all the people are gone, and it feels like you're walking on air. Head down the stairs and no subtlety remains. Disturbingly vein-y lines, dark-ish and reddish, dig through the floor, walls, columns, and ceiling. A set of turnstiles mark the bottom of the stairs at your back, and in front, there's a set of escalators leading deeper within. Snow plays on TV screens to either side, and past them, would-be electric maps display cracked and broken. Those Persona Users whose outfits transform will, while they were in their normal clothes above, find them transformed here. No Shadows lurk in the entrance, but they can still sense your presence at this point--so this is your last chance to turn back. BGM: Mementos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_Jkz_ZC9Yc <Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
Normally, when you go to the train station, you're not carrying a baseball bat. Hazuki Nakao is an exception to many rules, however, as she drags a baseball bat into the bathroom of the Shibuya train station... in sight of another girl who might know her.
She's in her usual outfit, as she enters the currently-empty girls bathroom and goes to the mirror. Katsuko would have an opportunity to sneak up at this point, as she stares intently into it, and...
"Okay... Mementos, Mementos, Mementos, Mementos..."
She takes a breath.
"Mementos."
And the world changes.
The city is empty outside the Underground Mall entrance without a soul, footsteps like one is walking on air. Hazuki proceeds down the stairs without turning back, but as she does, something changes in her. Her hair flashes orange and ash-grey, her outfit changes into one with a massive winged pauldron and magical girl-esque dress, and her attitude turns from gloomy to confident in an instant.
Her silver baseball bat has turned gold.
Dark red veins crawl through the walls and floors, as TVs play snow and the electronic maps are cracked and broken. Turnstiles mark their back, and escalators mark their descent.
Hazuki proceeds down the escalators, as fractal blueness dots the lines of vision. Metal bars keep her from wandering in certain situations as she ends up in a strange-ambience train station, and literally leaps onto the tracks. The walls are lit poorly with fluorescent lights, and wind and debris blows at them, encouraging them down the tracks.
A dark and maze-y region is what they end up in, and skittering noises can be heard in the distance. It's at this point Hazuki stops and stretches.
"Alright! Time to train..."
It might be a good time to interrupt her now.
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
Upon first catching sight of Hazuki, Katsuko had started forwards, hand raising a little as she began to call out and greet her. Before the words could leave her lips, however, she spotted something peculiar - the bat. That alone would not have been a particularly unusual sight, given the popularity of the sport, but most people didn't drag it into the train station, let alone brandish it when they were in the station's bathroom. While it may have been more sensible to simply ask what was going on, Katsuko grew as suspicious as she did curious, and elected to tail Hazuki instead.
She hid around a corner before slipping into a stall, peeking out from behind a barrier to try and figure out what exactly Hazuki intended to do. She'd not started vandalising the place, and there appeared to be nobody inside that she intended to visit violence upon. So what was she doing, and why did she seem so intent on chanting that same word into her phone? Before Katsuko could even begin to form a coherent theory, reality itself warped around her, as if the fabric of it was being tugged upon from every angle.
Katsuko backed away, unsure of what she saw, and unwilling to be trapped in it regardless of what it was. She stepped back, mind on edge and heart racing, only stopping when she collided with the cubicle wall. Slight though the impact was, it managed to shake her out of her shock enough to spur her into action, and she set forward to follow Hazuki with all due haste. Or, at least, that was her intention. Distracted by the unsettling new environment she had been thrust into, Katsuko's mind was flooded with questions as much as it was silent panic, no matter how hard she tried to push it down and think clearly. It was only natural that her eyes were averted when Hazuki transformed.
The figure she saw as she pushed through into the depths - against her better judgement - was a stranger to her. A local of the strange realm, perhaps? Someone else that had been dragged into it with her, by whatever ritual Hazuki had performed in the bathroom? Those questions, and a bevy more, all raced through her mind, clamouring for attention every step of the way. Even as Katsuko's sharp eyes flitted between the world's onslaught of unsettling imagery, and her mind was wracked by the cacophony of sounds both close and distant, she could not help but let her focus draw back to that enigmatic figure before her.
Then, they spoke. The voice sounded familiar - but then again, not. A thought tugged at the edge of her mind, as if she had been handed puzzle pieces with no idea on how to arrange them, but she pushed it aside. There were more pertinent matters at hand.
Like interrogating the figure before her.
"You." Katsuko said, her voice cold as ice, her face like solid stone as she levelled a glare at them. "What is this place? Where am I? And who are you?"
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
As Katsuko speaks, Hazuki pauses, turns on her heel, and nearly falls over in shock. "Yoshinaga-senpai?!"
She blinks twice, alarm reaching her eyes. She takes a moment to panic, before speaking. "It's me, Hazuki! How'd you get in here?!" A pause. Oh no, did she drag her in from the bathroom? Stupid careless Hazuki...
"Don't panic! I'll get you out of here! You're just in a magical train station that reflects humanity and is full of monsters!" Wait, no. That's not helpful. "It's complicated! Just follow my lead and everything will be okay...!"
Hazuki's probably panicking more than Katsuko is. The skittering gets louder, as if it's slowly being drawn by the noise.
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
"Nakao-san?" Katsuko was the very picture of cool and collected as she asked the question. Her voice was even, yet carried enough force to it that she could not have been seen as anything but serious. Her expression remained stony, unwavering even in the face of the unknown. Even her body language spoke of composure, barely shifting unless to let her glance to one side. But internally, a conscious effort had to be made to maintain that appearance. Thrust into a strange realm with a stranger explanation for it, Katsuko's mind ran a mile a minute to process everything, leaving a tense moment of silence or two before she continued. "If you have a way out, then move quickly. I hear something coming." She whipped her head to the side, hearing yet more skittering from that direction. It surrounded her, as if threatening to drown her, and it took every ounce of her willpower to focus on hauling ass out of that hellhole.
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
"Right, right-" Hazuki started, before turning to start past Katsuko.
It was too late.
Whipping her head back, she tilts back on her heel, bat swinging out as a Shadow, a black blob with a strange mask, suddenly lunges at her in an abrupt burst of speed. The Shadow transforms in an instant, a viscid rotting meat pile, a veritable Slime, manifesting and slumping backwards from the blow, but maintaining shape. And then another comes. And then another. They ooze towards the exit, coralling them so that their only escape is deeper within
"Oh crap," she says perhaps a bit too quietly, before taking a breath. "I got this! There shouldn't be more coming!"
There's probably more coming, as Hazuki reached out a hand. A blue butterfly manifested, flying around, before landing in the palm of her hand...
With a claw grip, much like a gamer with an arcade stick, the butterfly is mercilessly crushed.
"Persona!"
Her Persona Janus is manifested, a royal figure with two masks and two clock hand for blades. In an instant, a blast of pure light is fired at the wounded Slime from the clock blades, moving to envelop it. It survives, however, and Hazuki's eyes widen.
"Follow me, it's gonna explode!"
what
She moves to rush deeper inside, ducking down a corridor but will grab Katsuko if she stalls. Maybe they can take a breather once they get enough distance.
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
A putrid, squelching, mass of decaying flesh, adorned with a mask. Katsuko was unsure if she was supposed to be shocked, revolted, panicked, or some combination of the three. She opted for revulsion tinged with just enough panic to instil urgency into her actions - there would be time to ruminate on the nature of such vile things another time. For now, safety was her priority, yet even that was denied to her by the shambling mounds that stood as a barrier between her and the exit. Her eyes scanned the environment, searching desperately for an out, but instead caught on the spectacle Hazuki put on.
Persona - a word she recognised, though certainly not in this context. The appearance of yet another supernatural creature - one that appeared to be under Hazuki's thrall, if her command of the thing was any indication - only confused matters further, and left Katsuko with yet more questions to cloud her mind. Consternation crept into her features, persisting even after she bolted in Hazuki's direction. Adrenaline made certain she kept pace, and with it flooding her system, she even had the strength to bark out a question.
"Will you PLEASE tell me what's going on?" For the first time in a while, Katsuko felt her tone shift to something resembling fear.
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
Hazuki makes sure the Slimes aren't following, before starting to speak. "I... it's... we ended up somewhere magical. This is Mementos... a supernatural world behind ours. I'm one of the ones awakened to it, who fights these monsters... Shadows. I accidentally pulled you in here, I think. I'm sorry." She bows her head, panic still in her heart.
"But! You'll be safe. I won't let anything hurt you." Hazuki says that with such a surety of will, raising her head and staring into Katsuko's eyes with her own gold ones. "We just need to find an exit. There's ways back up, but unless we decide to fight those Slimes... we'll need to find an alternate path out. Stay close, okay?"
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
The explanation offered little information that Katsuko could find useful, but she was far too busy catching her breath and attempting to remain calm to bother pressing Hazuki for details. With a horde of rancid beasts blocking their exit as well, Katsuko decided that perhaps it was better to simply keep anything but the most pertinent questions to herself until the danger had passed. That look Hazuki gave her, though... Whatever questions Katsuko might have thought important enough to ask were momentarily forgotten as she saw the resolve in them, and heard a command so confidently issued. She might have found it dashing, were the situation not so dangerous.
"Understood. Lead the way, then - I'm counting on you." It was less a vote of confidence and more a statement of fact. Bereft of weapons, training, experience, and knowledge, Katsuko - much to her disdain - had to rely on Hazuki.
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
As Katsuko says she's counting on Hazuki, the latter nods, smiling brightly.
As they progress inside to find an alternative exit or even time out the Slimes, the path they took leads them deeper and deeper... straight into a large chamber. The tracks continue progressing, but they might not have a chance to continue further, as noises seem to be coming from deeper, more Slimes.
"Uhhh..." Hazuki says. "The layout's different from last time... should we take the chance or look for another corridor?"
She'd take another breather, but it's very likely someone won't let them. Someone... Shadowy. At the least, she's alert now!
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
The lack of light left it difficult to make out what lurked beyond - a fact made clear by Katsuko squinting into the distance. She could make out a humanoid figure, steeped in darkness and blocking their exit, but little more beyond that. It was a simple thing, and a far less repulsive prospect than the legions of festering pustules that dragged themselves through the levels above. So why did the one before her twist her stomach into a knot, and have her clenching her jaw tight at the mere sight of it?
As she noticed the thing that stood amidst the blackness, it too noticed her. It turned slowly, gold eyes like pinpricks of light in an ocean of black, underscored by a grin so sharp it looked as though it had been carved with a knife's tip. Slow, steady, footsteps resounded off the subway walls as it started forwards, and what dim light was afforded to them revealed the figure to be a man - as did the voice that left its lips.
"Oh? What have we here?" It said, every word accompanied by the tapping of its footfalls. "Some uninvited guests. I *do* wish you people would make an appointment first..."
What little light was cast on the Shadow revealed a plain suit, woven from navy thread and layered atop a pristine white shirt. Around its neck, a tie to match the suit itself was attached, tapering up towards a older man's face, itself topped by black hair slicked back until the light caught on it was almost blinding. Katsuko said nothing - she *did* nothing. She froze on the spot, her face caught somewhere between shock and fury, while her fists clenched with white-knuckled tightness.
"You..." She spoke, her voice lowering into a deep, rumbling, growl. "...What are you doing here...?"
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
Hazuki sees the humanoid figure, after Katsuko does, eyes widening. Gold eyes, but not quite like hers...
A Shadow.
"Oh no..." Hazuki says, taking her bat and taking a combat stance.
"Do you know this guy, Yoshinaga-senpai?" Hazuki asks fromt in front, bat at the ready. "I don't think I can take on a human's Shadow easily on my own... we need to be careful!"
That's to say, she's going to try if it's their only way out, until they can get enough distance to make a retreat. She herself looks over his face, trying to see if she's heard of him anywhere. If he's some suit, maybe not, but maybe Katsuko will explain.
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
The Shadow cocked a brow and spoke again. Each word that oozed from its lips dripped with smugness, its every sentence a taunt, its every movement beckoning her to come closer and try her luck.
"Do I know you?" It asked, before tapping its chin casting its gaze to one side in a mocking gesture. "Hm... You certainly aren't someone I've had dealings with... and I'd certainly remember if you were one of my empl-"
"Yoshinaga."
Whether Katsuko heard Hazuki or not was irrelevant. Her eyes, narrowing and focussed like a hawk's, were locked on to the Shadow. "Hiroyuki Yoshinaga. You will answer for your crimes against him."
"Yoshinaga...?" The Shadow looked to her again. The look he gave her was, once more, mocking in its exaggeration, with the smugness in its tone only serving to pour salt upon the wound. It shrugged, cocked its head to the side, and settled its eerie, unblinking, eyes back onto her. "Hm... Ah yes, I remember him! That oaf was *unbearably* naive. So much wasted potential, just because he couldn't look the other way when it mattered..." Katsuko's teeth clenched again - this time so hard that she swore she could feel them cracking under the force of her own jaw.
"You... You speak to me like that again, and I will-"
"And that idiot almost cost us our contract !" It loomed ever closer, its form swallowing the light behind it, draping darkness over Katsuko as if to swallow her whole. "Crashing into Yuki's car like that, and on his holiday too... At least crashing seems to have knocked some sense into him, for once in his life."
"Shut up!" Whatever semblance of composure Katsuko might have clung to vanished in that moment. In its place was hatred - sheer, unfettered, primal, hatred, so bile-tinged and acidic that her tongue burnt as she spoke those words. "He was- He IS a good man! He's better than you'll ever be! And I'll-"
The Shadow waved its hand, dismissing whatever vitriol Katsuko still had left to direct at him, before speaking in a tone as lazy as the gesture given.
"Whatever you have to say, I'm sure it can wait. I've entertained you long enough as it is, so please allow my friends to show you to the door." With a snap of its fingers, more of those festering monstrosities emerged from the black, oozing their way across the ground. The circle drew in slowly, but with no gaps in the horde's defences, it was only a matter of time before they closed in on Katsuko and Hazuki.
"No!" Paralysed by fear as much as hatred, Katsuko stood in place, gesturing sharply at the Shadow. "You don't get to leave! Not after what you did! Get back here!"
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
The back and forth between Katsuko and the Shadow causes Hazuki to falter a bit. Hiroyuki Yoshinaga... is that someone important to Katsuko?
As she's defiant, and the Shadow moves to send the Slimes over and everything looks very bad...
Hazuki steels herself. A shaky grin appears on her face, as she points the bat to the Slimes. "Sorry, but I'm going to be the one to play this game tonight... I'll hold you off!"
It's a suicide plan very likely if she's unlucky. But if Katsuko died here, because of her action... she'd never forgive herself.
"Yoshinaga-senpai! You can't give up! If you die here... you'll never be able to face him! You'll never be able to get your revenge! So look to the stars and follow your light!"
Hazuki tries to inspire, even as she enters what may be her final battle. She doesn't want to die... but it's okay, if Katsuko escapes, right?
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
Katsuko did not listen. Katsuko did not respond. Katsuko, blinded by rage and deafened by a single-minded desire to bring the man before her to justice, could only register Hazuki as a distant, stifled, sound behind her. Even the massed horde that encircled them was only barely registered, their presence at the corners of her vision ignored as anger swelled in her like wildfire.
"Dying here, and dragging your friend down with you..." The Shadow sighed with mocking pity. "Whoever you are, Yoshinaga would be embarassed to have you here on his behalf. Now, begone."
What little distance was left between Katsuko and the encroaching mob was swallowed up in a heartbeat. Katsuko scarcely had time to realise what was happening to her before the weight of the first one struck her to the ground. The second hammered against her torso, bludgeoning whatever breath she'd held from her lungs, rending a desperate gasp from her core as she struggled to clamber to her feet. But, pinned beneath the ever-growing horde, even the surge of strength that adrenaline and anger granted her was not enough to set her free. She would die there, and Hazuki would die with her. This was the end.

"Is this the extent of your conviction?"
A voice echoed in her mind, and brought with it agony. Her skull felt as though it would shatter and rip apart at the same time, her mind trembled as excruciating pain wracked it like a lightning bolt, and it was all she could do to bring her hands to her face as if that futile gesture would do a thing to alleviate it. She could offer no response to the voice - only listen as it echoed at her from every direction, inside and out. It was torture. It was pain. It felt as if something was attempting to rip itself out of her very soul.
"You swore to deliver justice to those that believed themselves above it. You swore vengeance upon those that believed themselves invincible. You swore to fight, no matter the cost to yourself or to others. Is your will truly so weak that you would forsake those promises?"
Katsuko struggled. Even as every fibre in her body screamed under the strain, and her vision clouded from the fury plaguing her, she gave her answer with manic thrashing and guttural cries of hatred. "No? Then I shall lend you my power, and our pact shall be formed. I am thou, and thou art I. Speak my name, and become what you must."
"Edmond... Dantes..."
For all her fury, it availed her of nothing. The black tide swallowed Katsuko, her hand vanishing beneath it as the horde piled upon her body. Darkness engulfed them all, and in moments, she was condemned to a grave of shadow.
Then, a deafening crack ripped through the air. Detonating gunpowder blasted from the shadows, its sound like the sudden clap of thunder, backed by a burst of orange flame. The darkness at the edge of the arena dispelled for but a moment, affording a fleeting glimpse of something else that lurked inside. Lines of gleaming silver were tinged flame-orange by the pistol's blast, forming accents across the body of the weapon's wielder, tapering to razor-sharp points until they reached the edges of their owner. Sharp curves and wicked points comprised its silhouette, a billowing curtain of black their backdrop. Then, just as quickly as it appeared, it faded.
Only for another shot to ring out, and tear through a mass of slimes near Hazuki.
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
As the Slimes approach to engulf, Hazuki defiant til the end, something happens. The Black Tide swallows Katsuko...
"YOSHINAGA-SENPAI!"
Hazuki's too late. She turns, calling out. "ELIGOR!"
A red armored knight on a black horse manifests, moving to try and burn through the Slimes with a rapid rush, as Hazuki tries to carve through them, but she's not fast enough...
The thundercrack rings out. Hazuki turns, getting a glimpse of the mysterious combatant, but she's hyperfocusing, trying to do anything, recover anything, hope this is a bad dream.
Hazuki screams out, as the horse turns, and impacts her bat with a crushing tide of gravity, Hazuki charging forward and slamming it into the nearest shadow even as the gunslinger saves her life.
"You there! You have to get out of here! I can't leave her!"
At this rate, though, they might be able to thin the crowd that they can just *escape*, and after a long moment, if the figure doesn't pre-empt her, Hazuki will literally turn towards the exit, shaking in rage and grief.
She knows she can't die just for the sake of dying.
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
The only response the figure gave to Hazuki was another pistol shot, and another line of monsters destroyed. The ones that had descended upon Katsuko. Nothing beneath them remained but dirt and cement. Nothing of the woman herself remained - no body, no possessions, nothing. She was gone, and no volley of lead would bring her back. The figure did not notice, or did not care. What few slivers of light shone on it caught against the pistol's barrel as it turned towards the human Shadow, giving it a split second to see the thing's intention before the trigger was once again pulled.
A cry of surprise was all that the Shadow could give before it retreated into the lower depths of the subway. As it retreated into darkness, the gunslinger emerged from it, revealing themselves before the assembled crowd. Boots of darkened leather, their tops tapering into sharp points that jutted towards the knee, beat against the ground. The leather gave way to dark grey fabric hanging from its wearer's body, while above it a shirt of similar fit and colour sat. Shrouded by a longcoat as black as pitch, its hood cast shadows on its face that left its eyes buried, while below it sat a mask - the grinning lower half of a skull, and the same silver as the accents that trailed across its chest.
Behind it strode a figure wreathed in smoke as soot, an ink-black tailcoat trailing behind it. Iron, damaged yet polished, clung to its face in a crude mask, while blood-red satin enveloped its chest in a form-fitting waistcoat. A pistol - the pistol from earlier - hung from its hip, while its hand now clutched the handle of a gleaming steel sabre. Yet, despite it trailing behind the hooded thing, it did not seem to walk as much as it seemed to glide. Feet plunged into that same thick smoke, it resembled a wraith, forever hanging over someone's shoulder.
"Leave." The first thing commanded, extending its finger sharply towards the exit. "I'll follow."
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
As the Slimes are being destroyed, Hazuki turns to the mysterious masked figure, trying to keep herself sane as she clearly doesn't recognize them, and nods once. She runs as far as she can, and eventually finds her way to the escalators back to the entrance.
Rising up to the safe part of Mementos, Hazuki makes it a few steps towards the actual exit before she loses her balance and falls to her knees. She's trying to prevent tears from welling up. She couldn't save Katsuko... was this really that dire? Was she that useless?
"..."
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
"Get up, Nakao-san. We have to go."
The figure in grey crouched down beside her before trying to bring her to her feet, an arm wrapped around her back as it dragged upwards. "They'll be on us any second. We-" Its voice stopped suddenly, and for a moment, it was silent. It pondered something, then sighed lightly, before both hands reached towards its own face. One peeled the mask away, letting it fall away and dissipate into the ether, while the other hauled back the thick fabric of the hood. Slowly, the veil was lifted, and Katsuko's face - shocked, yet focussed - emerged from beneath. "Apologies. I'm not used to wearing this."
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
As the voice says her name, Hazuki is only mildly confused, because she's too busy struggling. It's only as she's dragged upthe mask is removed, turning up to the figure, that her eyes widen.
"Yoshinaga-senpai..."
That was her, then... she Awakened? How? What kind of Awakening was that? She didn't even recognize her... Hazuki shakes her head, before stabilizing on her feet. "Right... we'll talk once we're out of here. Let's get back to the real world."
Then, Hazuki leads Katsuko to the exit, steps through, and allows that blue to take away her vision.
She's back in her normal outfit, carrying her silver baseball bat in the girls restroom. Luckily, it's still empty, her footing shaky as she wipes the tears from her eye.
"I'm glad you're okay..."
<Pose Tracker> Katsuko Yoshinaga has posed.
It wasn't the emergence into the real world that gave Katsuko pause. It was a relief to be back somewhere safe, even if it was in the middle of some subway's bathroom. It wasn't the slew of strange things that had been heaped on her back in whatever place that was. Katsuko had many questions, of course, but calmed herself by rationalising that she could have them answered in due course. It wasn't even the mortal peril she'd been placed in - her shock, though still waning, left enough manic energy in her system to keep her from processing all of it and collapsing into a catatonic heap. It was Hazuki's reaction.
Katsuko took a moment to analyse the situation, and came to the conclusion that offering her usual brusque response would be insensitive. That, in turn, would damage their relationship, and thereby risk depriving her of a useful ally. She could hardly afford to lose someone that seemed so genuinely concerned for her, and as such, did what she could to try and bring comfort to Hazuki.
"I'm fine, Nakao-san. Just a little shaken up." Reassurance had been given. What next? Directions, perhaps? It wouldn't hurt to take charge of the situation, she supposed, if only to get them out of the bathroom. "You should rest. We'll talk about this when you're well."
Whether she was conscious of it or not, something new tinged Katsuko's voice.
Concern.
<Pose Tracker> Hazuki Nakao has posed.
Hazuki nods once more, a weak smile on her face as Katsuko gives direction. "Okay..."
Hazuki will leave the restroom, straighten up, and then split off from Katsuko. Both are a bit shaken... they should probably process it a bit before they dive straight into it.
She's just so glad she's okay.
