- Summary: Rokuro summons his assets to a meeting, after three weeks of Miho's machinations against him. He means to kill her; he miscalculated. The cost of Miho's own miscalculations is a bullet to her arm to protect Yua. The cost to him, after he refuses Miho's mercy, is his death, as Remi refuses to follow his orders and run her friend through. Remi is angry that Miho would put Yua in danger this way, and Yua is distraught over seeing what Miho sees so often. But when Rokuro called to Yua for aid, she denied him, too...

<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.
Miho has been hard at work, the last twenty-two days. After her -- and therefore their -- handler, Rokuro Nishiyama, decided to torture Yua following an unsuccessful mission and the loss of her Evoker, she's been making back-room deals, talking to powerful people, and doing many other things to convince the men at his middle-management echelons and the ones above him that it wouldn't be so bad if he stopped working for them, really.
For this reason, Miho, Yua, and Remi have all gotten their assignments from him via phone call; Rokuro is not blind to the fact that Miho plans to kill him.
He has his own plan.
He calls Yua and Remi to a warehouse in Narumi Ward -- a storage centre, of the kind people place their effects between moves or while they're living in a smaller apartment. The garage door is presently up; there is nothing in this space but smooth, tiled floor, an empty car parked in the back, and a few effects under a tarp beside it.
(Cleaning supplies.)
He called her assets, but knows that Miho will also come.
<Pose Tracker> Miho Ijuuin has posed.
Indeed, Miho will come. She didn't necessarily require the man's death... but she required him out of the way, one way or another, and that's certainly the most permanent method.
But he has a plan, it would seem, and Miho talks to Yua and Remi in advance.
"He's planning something," she says simply. "Be careful. I'll handle it if he over-reaches."
A warehouse in Narumi with cleaning supplies...
It's concerning. But Miho will step inside first, with the plan behind that Yua and Remi will flank her.
This has the benefit of protecting Yua from two different angles.
Step, step. Miho arrives, her shoes clicking on the tiles.
"Nishiyama-san?"
<Pose Tracker> Remi Ryuuja has posed.
Remi is frequently frustrated by her circumstances. She wants, generally, to see her friends be happy and safe. This is a desire that is only made worse and amplified by the conditioning she received--she is to protect NWO assets, a category that now includes two of her best friends, as well as herself.
So while Miho works in making deals, all Remi can do is wait, and try to keep Yua safe. That she knows there are things she cannot protect Yua from... is responsible for no small amount of stress. She would rather be taking action and making deals the way Miho can, but to the NWO...
She's just a weapon. Who would listen to a weapon's opinion on anything?
And no matter how much she would like to keep herself and Yua away from this, she cannot ignore the summons. She had nodded to Miho's instructions, before they arrived. "Understood."
She is a step behind and to Miho's side, dressed for this occasion in a dark charcoal gray cap, jacket and skirt, a white blouse with a green ribbon tie, and black tights. Inside the jacket is her Evoker. On her hip is a rapier. Her long wavy hair is held back with a green clip.
She is silent, but focused as she steps into the storage unit. Her eyes scan the room with practiced ease to note the details--tarp, car, and the man they're here to meet. Finally she sets her attention on Nishiyama.
She is tense, alert and waiting for... whatever may happen.
<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.
Yua is terrified of the man, of course. He let the light in!
And indeed, the NWO does not consult her for her opinion, by and large.
But he calls to them, and she cannot ignore him. It is for this reason he called her: she would not dare to defy him, and he knows in turn that Remi would not dare allow her to come here alone. She approahes behind Miho, a touch to her side; she is dressed in her usual tutu, though her shoes are better at supporting her ankles. She bears no plain weapon, though her Evoker is hidden under a false bottom in the black purse slung over her shoulder.
"Mimi..." She murmurs, to the woman who ought to be her wife, when she urges them to be careful.
She doesn't need to say it: she's worried.
And in they go.
"I see you decided to show up as well," Rokuro says, when Miho is the one who steps up, in the middle. He presses a button on a remote control; the garage door rolls down, offering them the privacy of the storage unit. "... women have always struggled with following directions."
He shakes his head; he wears a suit, of course, but his jacket is opened rather than buttoned-up. What is inside there is difficult to see, in the swinging light of the garage. "But this report is too sensitive for an interceptable medium," he explains.
"There's someone who has been targeting us for weeks, now. Three weeks, by my estimation... and you, in particular," he looks to Yua, "are in danger."
He has always tried to be reasonable -- and now Miho has moved against him. Fine, he thinks; he can be unreasonable, too.
<Pose Tracker> Miho Ijuuin has posed.
Miho is aware of the frustrations of her friend and the fears of the woman who ought to be her wife. But there is little she can do to alleviate either... yet. But soon.
Miho is in one of her usual suits; no tie, fitted jacket, dark trousers. She isn't wearing a weapon at the moment.
It's a deliberate choice.
In they go.
"Funny," Miho says. "I find that inadequate men complain often of what women don't do for them."
he notices the jacket is open; that's unusual for him. But the report is sensitive, and the garage door is closed...
So, then. Is it time?
"By all means. Tell me the danger the woman I'd sacrifice anyone to protect is in, Nishiyama-san."
Miho smiles. She has the normal amount of teeth.
<Pose Tracker> Remi Ryuuja has posed.
A button is pressed, and Remi cooly glances behind herself to see the door sliding down. She doesn't panic. Mainly because she can't. She takes it in, and mentally updates her mental map of the situation, then looks forward again at the greatest threat in the room.
Her eyes narrow slightly as the man speaks. Too sensitive... bullshit.
Three weeks... well, that cinches what they're here to talk about, then. She feels anger and heat rising in her chest as he speaks about Yua being in danger but forces herself to stay calm.
She is glad Miho can bite back with the words Remi wishes she could speak, though.
Miho asks what the danger is. Remi stays silent, but her eyes are keeping track of that unbuttoned jacket. She may have an Evoker, but outside of the Dark hour... a normal gun could be just as deadly, if not more so.
And she waits, for when she is needed to respond.
<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.
"I have never requested anything untoward of any of you," Rokuro scowls at Miho, in turn. "There are men who would make far more personal requests of an assignment like this... and I have kept you from them."
Remi cannot panic: Yua assuredly can. She shifts behind Miho a few inches more, a hand resting at the side-hem of her jacket, though she doesn't dare grasp her.
"Have you?" He wonders, in turn, as he looks steadily to Miho.
"You gave your woman to that cousin of yours... did you ever tell them, Ijuuin-san, that he is a man just like me? Indeed, he may have more pull in the Order, given that damnable name of yours..." He looks to Yua, then. "And you. Have you told them?"
"I-I--" Yua stammers, flinching back.
"Of course not," he fills in her answer, for her. "You've always loved your illusions. You'll tell them he's a kind man, and cover for the injustice of the woman who's wrapped you around her smallest finger."
<Pose Tracker> Miho Ijuuin has posed.
Miho notes that scowl, and her toothy smile widens. "That's true," she says. "You have, until recently, done quite well at that."
Yua shifts behind her; Miho is quite aware of her. And what she does, as he speaks...
"She is my friend," Miho says, tilting her head towards Remi. "Not a mere 'asset'. As you would be foolish to discount. ...Of course I have told her the situation with Yua's 'husband.'"
At least, what she knows of it. He speaks of Yua as if there is more she does not yet know...
"What you are, Nishiyama-san, is a fool. You could have done well with this assignment, if you hadn't come to believe you have more power than you do." A normal gun could be deadly here; Miho hasn't flinched so far. She will see if he flinches first.
"I have an offer for you. I will arrange your passage out of the country, into a comfortable living abroad. You will never darken our doorsteps again."
"In any case, you will never cause Yua a mote's distress again."
"I advise that you take the deal. It will not be offered a second time."
<Pose Tracker> Remi Ryuuja has posed.
There is a ripple of tension that runs through Remi's body as Rokuro says he never abused his position. He still inflicted pain on Yua. Kept her away from assignments where he might have protected her. Anger and subservience are, as ever, the two forces that wage war within her body.
Yua shifts, and Remi notes this in her periphrial vision. She is still watching the man's open coat.
Remi is glad to hear Miho call her a friend, despite the... hierarchy of their situation. She only gives a short nod to confirm that she has, in fact, been told.
Her focus on Rokuro is intense, keeping silent as the offer is made. Her look briefly darkens as Miho mentions Yua's distress--her fingers twitch for a moment, wanting to grasp for something, but she stills herself a moment later.
<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.
Remi's fingers are twitching; Rokuro sees it.
"Of course," he says. "You are friends." The word drips with his derision. "And through that friendship you achieve many transgressions of the proper order, I'm sure. Your determination to treat this lightly is the sole reason I have been forced to act as disciplinarian, Ijuuin-san."
Yua squeaks, peeking out, halfway behind Miho. The top of her head brushes Miho's broad shoulders; she is someone built to seek shelter there.
And Rokuro bears her terror no mind.
"Do not forget," he issues Miho, "that I am not a powerless man. I have seen you move against me. You do not move uncontested. There are plenty enough men in the Order... who would prefer to solve the problem of a woman who insists on wearing a man's suit. If you think your position is assured, it's simply your arrogance."
He could be comfortable abroad... and all his suffering would have been for nothing.
"I did try to be fair," he says. "But I will not become one of those men who must constantly look over their shoulders, for fear of the power they left." His gaze shifts, to Miho's right side -- to her right-hand woman. "Ryuuja-san," he issues her, then. "Take your blade in hand."
It is not a suggestion.
His hand moves to his open jacket -- pulls out his gun. It loads bullets, not Personas, and all it evokes is blood.
"Don't!" Yua cries, distraught, flinching behind Miho --
As Rokuro speaks over her: "You will run Miho Ijuuin through."
He fires, and the route runs slightly to the left of Miho's centre.
Going straight for her heart.
<Pose Tracker> Miho Ijuuin has posed.
"Hmmm."
She says nothing of treating matters lightly. Instead, she waits through his statements. She waits to what he says, and indeed--what he says is not unfair. He would have to look over his shoulder every day. But if he does not accept--then that leaves her but one option. She must wait--
Remi is ordered to take her blade in hand. Miho doesn't even look towards her. Yua cries, distraight, but Miho--through arrogance or trust--keeps her attention on Rokuro. And then--
Blood splatters on the garage door behind them. Miho moves as Rokuro pulls his gun and aims, but realizes after a moment that if she simply moves Yua behind her will be shot instead. So, in that extra second of reflex--She doesn't get out of the way.
And thus, her blood paints the garage door's insides red. But it is not her heart that is shot through. It is her arm, the meaty upper left arm that sees his aim slightly frustrated--but the blood loss will do for her soon enough if it isn't tended.
Before he can fire again she calls, "Remi! Stop him!"
Whether she does or not, the blood runs down, down, down her sleeve, staining her clothes with crimson red. ....And then, over her Mark. Over the black sigil in her flesh that marks her as belonging to the man in her dreams.
Blood touches it--
Miho smiles toothily. The world tilts on its axis briefly, a horrific heartbeat ringing out for everyone. The space changes; the supernatural is now here.
"It is not arrogance, Rokuro Nishiyama."
Demons begin to appear in a wide radius all around; whta will they do? It is unimportant, save for the ones that appear in here, beautiful Empusae that look to Miho and start to dance.
"It is destiny."
The demons whirl and cavort, dancing madly.
And Miho intones, "Per... so... na."
Red light BURSTS from her position as Faust appears, dressed in plague garb. Faust appears before her and Rokuro, with Miho between the both of them and Yua.
"Remi-chan," she says. "Make your choice."
<Pose Tracker> Remi Ryuuja has posed.
To say they are friends is true, but insufficient in some ways. Yua in particular, she has shared a horrifying experience with, but even with Miho, they still share the horrors of the supernatural that they are now caught in.
She hears Yua squeak, and her head turns a fraction of an inch to listen to her. That tension in her chest tightens--she wants to act, but Miho is still trying to command the situation. Not that she could move against Rokuro anyway.
Then the command comes. Her expression darkens, but there is no delay as she draws the rapier in a single, smooth motion, letting that hand hang down by her side. She withdrew it, but will not do one thing more without instruction.
When Rokuro orders her to run Miho through, however, her hand lifts--but then stops, the tension in her body causing her arm to tremble. Her face, cold and stoic, briefly becomes tortured agony as her mind races--
She must follow orders. She must protect NWO assets. Both of these things are in conflict. Rokuro Nishiyama outranks Miho, certainly, but Remi's innate desire is to side with her friends.
The conflicting orders left her in conflict. Remi had spoken to Myunghon once of how the removal of her fear forced her to hyperanalyze everything around her, not able to rely on her innate sense to gauge a situation. It is exhausting for her, and yet, in this moment, as she mentally crawls along the spiderweb of consequences... She considers the same things that Miho does--if Miho takes the bullet, she possibly dies. If she moves, Yua is at risk.
Yua is at risk.
And that agonized look on her face briefly goes slack, as that thought hits. She can see it: without Miho around to protect Yua from the system, she is at more risk. She is at more risk yet from Rokuro specifically, who has already shown a willingness to torture Yua.
Yua was the template for her conditioning to protect NWO assets--her natural desire to protect her friend perverted to the NWO's ends. But even though they succeeded... that instinct was always strongest for Yua herself.
In the end, she finds she has no choice at all--and for once, she doesn't mind in the slightest.
The tension in her body goes slack, as she turns and calmly rushes the man holding the gun. Her blade flicks out as she jams the tip of the blade into the Rokuru's fingers, both to damage them and push the gun away from her friends, then she steps further into his guard and smashes a blow into his windpipe as her free hand grabs the gun to rip it from his grasp.
Her eyes are cold, but she's smiling cruelly as she stares him in the eye. "Tut, tut..." she finally speaks, for the first time. "You were too concerned with looking over your shoulder to look at what was before you."
This close, she won't let him take another action.
<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.
The bullet slams in; blood splatters out. Yua feels something hot against her cheek, where she stands, locked in fear like a deer facing down the headlights of a car in the night.
"Iiiiieeeee...!!"
Yua shrieks in terror, the smell of blood reaching her nose -- and then she realise why. "Mimi!" She cries, her heart leaping like that deer as she feels faintness grasping her head; perhaps she has run out of air, for all the horror she's drawn into her lungs. "Recchi! Recchi, help--!"
(She tries so often to avoid asking that of her; she knows she doesn't really have a choice. But here, in the blood and the screaming, it is as simple a reflex as locking in place.)
Rokuro is inured to screaming women; became resistant to it long ago. What he is less resistant to is a blade. He fires, again, but this shot flies wide past Miho's side -- past Yua, behind her! -- as Remi stabs her blade into his head. "You fucking bitch!" He snarls, as the gun falls from his hand; the pain of that distracts him, leaves him open to that punch. He coughs, chokes, and staggers back, doubled over from the shock of it; Remi has the opportunity to look down on him, seeking his eyes.
If he had the strength to fight, he wouldn't need to send women in his place.
"Hhk... what's before me...? Demon women, is what!" The world tilts on its hinges; he staggers, to grasp the side of the car where he surely meant to stow her corpse for a quick disposal. "Damn you and your destiny, you fucking witches--!!"
"Mimi!" Yua shrieks, in the background; she does not worry about the Empusa, as they appear in the garage, dancing in their lopsided way, one brass leg and one of a donkey. It takes her a terrible effort to move at all -- and it's something she can only do when she realises that horrible man's been disarmed. She tugs at her skirt, but of course she does not have the strength to tear fabric like she surely means to; with a frustrated noise, she leans down to just take the whole thing off, leaving herself only in that leotard as she folds the sheer fabric of her black skirt over itself to wrap around Miho's arm, to try and keep her blood inside her.
She is crying -- sobbing, really -- beside herself; but she is beside Miho, just the same, as she grasps her arm and tries to fix what he has done.
Rokuro looks to her, then. "Yua Ijuuin!" He snaps, and there is desperation in his voice, yes. "They will kill me. Stop them!"
And she has never killed a man; has never had blood stain her hands as horrifically as it does now, as she tries to help her partner. "D--damn you!" She cries, shaking her head. "I consign you! You shot Mimi! Mimi! Mimi! Mimi...!"
<Pose Tracker> Miho Ijuuin has posed.
Remi must follow orders. Miho knows that. ...But she has fought with Remi, bled with Remi more than once; she believes that her conditioning is not as strong as her bond with her, and more to the point, definitely not stronger than her bond with Yua. ...no, the conditioning will suit that one. So she puts trust in Remi.
That trust is rewarded; even a moment to act is enough, but Remi gives her more than that moment.
But Yua screams, and Miho will never be inured to that. The shot flies wide this time, but it could've hit Yua, and in this moment, Miho's arrogance is apparent to her; she gave her foe a chance to strike at all.
That was her mistake.
"Yes," Miho says. "Demon women. That's correct."
Witches, he calls them. Miho accepts Yua's help, letting her arm be enwrapped; the bloodloss is already making her dizzy. But not so dizzy that she cannot function.
"Yes," Miho says. "We will."
"No... I will."
She steps forward. "You are right. I was arrogant."
"It is a mistake I do not intend to make again. Know that the men on your side were not brave enough to save you."
"Goodbye, Rokuro Nishiyama. You will be misssd...."
"But not by any of us."
She snaps her fingers, and Faust unfurls. In a blaze of nuclear blue flame, Rokuro will be consumed.
"...My demons," Miho intones next. "Dance your dance. Enjoy yourselves."
"I leave you the blood we spilled in our battle, as my thanks for your assistance. If you would clean up the evidence..." She reaches into her pocket, "I offer you these gems, as well." Beautiful, real gems; did Miho expect to have to pay demons today?
Faust rounds on Miho, and casts healing light upon her.
It won't close the wound, but it will give her a little more time to get to a private doctor, with the others.
"Thank you, Remi-chan," she says. "I knew that I could count on you."
"Yua... I am sorry. I exposed you to danger in my arrogance. I hope you can forgive me."
She turns, and, "Hrk--"
The wound is still bad.
<Pose Tracker> Remi Ryuuja has posed.
Remi could have run the man through easily--even in a supernatural space she is not slow, but it is a gamble for her to damage Rokuro any more than necessary to achieve her immediate objective of protecting Yua.
Yua's screams are also an excellent motivator for her actions in this moment. "Yua-chan, I am with you," she assures. Every fiber of her being wants to go to her, to reassure her, but she can't just yet--not while that man still presents a danger.
Rokuro calls her a bitch. Remi's response is a too-calm reply. "I am what men like you have made me." A weapon, with strength enough to spare, even outside of the supernatural.
She watches, impassively, as Faust comes forth with nuclear fire. The instant she is sure he is immolated she turns on a dime, crossing over to Miho with quick steps. "Yua-chan, I am here," she says again, this time far more gently. "Here, let me." She takes the wadded up skirt and uses her strength to apply pressure to help staunch the bleeding.
Miho thanks her, and then apologizes for explosing Yua to unnecessary danger. "Yes, you did," Remi snaps, giving her a glare. "Did you really think there was a chance he would have accepted your offer?"
Translation: we could have just killed him first and saved ourselves the trouble.
<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.
Miho may note the way Yua's hands tremble, as they tie the cloth to her. It is not sterile nor designed for the purpose; still, she knows enough from the first aid she learned for her boating and her hiking to know she ought to place pressure on the wound, but not so much that it becomes a tourniquet. (That, she knows, is something best used when the limb cannot be saved; she is not willing to disarm Miho so preemptively.) "Don't go," she chokes out, to Remi, as she works. "I, I..."
She's clearly strugglng.
"We are all as we were made," Rokuo issues back to Remi. "But you...!!" As Faust unfurls, his cries become pained and incoherent, rising to drown out Yua's tears in a sharp crescendo of agony before it dies to nothing at all.
Yua's bloody hand claps to her mouth, as she looks to the corpse, charred and warped by nuclear flame. "Oh," she gasps, between her fingertips; she looks quite ill, seeing a man who was human moments ago twisted to such a state.
"Adorable," one Empusa smiles, as she sways. "I could just gobble her up...! But you've always got a better argument for me, don't you, dear? What do you think, girls? Are diamonds a girl's best friend?"
"Why not?" Another muses, as she picks up Rokuro's corpse and swings about with it, as if dancing with him. "She gave us her blood, too. See? There it is, all splattered on the door!"
"So just close the door when you leave," a third instructs her. "We'll see ourselves out~ la, la, la~" She dances right past Remi, and the remote control to the door he dropped beside her. Handy! Remi can just close the door with the touch of a button when they leave.
With Remi's help, Yua finishes tying up the makeshift bandage on Miho's arm; it means they're both close enough to see the way the wife flinches, hearing Remi's glare. "D-don't yell at her!" She pleads, her voice thin and reedy. "Please? Mimi's hurt... w-we need to find a doctor!" She embraces Miho, fiercely, despite the blood splattered across her and dripping down. "I'm not mad, I'm not! I-it's okay, Mimi! Just don't leave me! You said it's destiny, right?! So, so you can't...!"
<Pose Tracker> Miho Ijuuin has posed.
The demons must be handled first, and Miho inclines her head. "Indeed. I always do." She smiles, though it is a little forced given the wound. "Very well."
She looks to the others; first to Yua, with her ill look. Then to Remi...
Miho accepts the help with her injury. "No," Miho says, "But by striking first, I would have invited reprisal. As it stands, we defended ourselves from his paranoid aggression."
She grimaces. "Though I will have to consider our next steps, as well... but this is not the time for timidity. We will strike as we must, be what we must, in order to move forward."
"It's all right," she tells Yua. "My mistake was in worrying about tomorrow when today was not yet won. I was overconfident. ...The injury to me, I projected; the danger it placed you in I did not enough."
"But I am glad," she says, "That you acquitted yourself thus, Remi-chan. ...You did well. Remember this: your will is your own, when it counts."
"...Let's go find that doctor," she starts, using her good arm to wrap around Yua and hold her close. "Remi-chan, if you would handle the door..."
If there's more to say, it can be said away from here.
"I will not leave you," she assures Yua first. "I will be fine. But if I had taken a dive to get out of the way, he may have hit you instead. ...So it's worth it."
<Pose Tracker> Remi Ryuuja has posed.
Whatever sharp look Remi has for Miho, it is nothing compared to the intense stare that Remi gives to the Empusa who speak sof gobbling Yua up. Her hand goes to the holster inside her jacket, gripping the Evoker within.
Make no mistake, she would take on all of these Demons if it meant keeping Yua safe. But she will not have to do so if Miho can keep them in check.
She snatches up that remote, though her other hand still clutches her rapier. She can take care of that much.
Remi will have to save her anger for later, when Yua pleads with her. "I won't," she promises quietly. When the makeshift bandage is finally tied she places a hand on Yua's shoulder. "We will seek help for her," she reassures. "Miho is made of sturdy stuff." They certainly don't want to delay, delay, of course, but... calming Yua down will help deal with the rest of the situation.
Miho explains, and Remi snorts angrily at that. "... I see. Then we have defended ourselves in spectacular fashion, I should say." She still sounds a little angry, but she's not quite snapping at Miho.
Another angry snort and a glance aside, as Miho compliments her. "Endangering Yua allowed me to act in her defense. I should not like to pay this price again, if we can help it."
As they head for the car, Remi finally sheathes her blade. She will have to clean it, of course, but she can handle that herself later. Once they're all cler of the door, Remi points the remote and clicks the button, setting the automatic door to close on the morbid scene within.
<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.
Yua is of course unnerved by the demons; but she always is. Demons can go from a pleasant chat to horrific violence at the touch of a dime, and she has always struggled with her fear of them. But the demons pacted to Miho... are at least willing to listen to her. Consider Miho's deals with an open mind, or whatever they use for their twisted reasoning.
Yua has no such pact established; they can smell her fear. It is fortunate that Remi would defend her -- but luckily, Miho thought ahead.
"Demon women..." She trails off, sadly, as Miho declares they'll be what they must to survive.
She clutches herself to Miho's bloodied jacket, hearing her mention the danger to herself. Miho's arm calms her; though right now, she's trying to hold Miho steady, too, as they make their way out. Remi said she's sturdy, but...
There's... so much blood...
"I'm sorry," she murmurs, head dipping, and she's apologising to both of them. (They're fighting because of her, she thinks, and feels wretched to think it.) "I... I just froze up... I-I was so scared. I couldn't do anything..."
But there is one thing she did: she let it happen.
And now there is blood on her hands, too.
