  • Where: Konan - Aerospace Museum
  • OOC Date: 2026-03-24
  • IC Date: Tuesday, October 16, 2012 (segues directly into this scene)
  • Summary: Tsubasa and Ichika call Masao up to help them investigate some suspicious rumours, only for Tsubasa to deeply regret their life choices when it all goes up in flames. Even luckiery is the fact that Masao is there to keep them on track to escaping after Ichika's plagued by phantom bad memories!

MONAD: A party led by Tsubasa Seki has begun the event Aerospace Museum.

The Konan District's Aerospace Museum is easy enough to find, in part
because it has a life-sized Zeppelin replica attached to the building as
both exhibit and restaurant. Rumor has it that it can actually fly, but well
you can't believe everything you hear, right?

In the lobby, there's World War II memorabilia, including a Mitsubishi A6M
Zero hanging in pristine condition from the roof above. The lobby looks
empty save for a beautiful young man in the Kasugayama High uniform that
some may recognize as Jun Kashihara. He's looking around with a fretful
frown, as if searching for a museum employee; upon spotting you, he
approaches with a letter in hand to say:

"Excuse me--I don't mean to alarm you, but you should leave immediately.
 Someone dangerous is coming here..."

The letter in his hand is tightly clenched, but the eagle-eyed can make out
a message like 'cOMe aLOnE tO ThE AerOspAcE MuSEUM oR ELsE <3' in a
 scrawled, erratic hand.

No sooner does he start a conversation with you, when abruptly an entire
wall detonates into a great conflagration, as some incendiary device
 detonates.

"Kya-hahaha! Welcome to my walk down memory lane. Guess you ran into the
first of my bombs. The next will go off in the stairwell, then the other
floors will go up in flames one by one!"

As flames of expiation light the heavens
The Lion's roar echoes far and wide

"Don't you remember? It's just like the Other Side. There's a field trip
touring the museum right now. If you don't get those kids to the roof,
they'll become barbeque! Better hurry! Kya-hehehe-ahahahaha!"

Your first challenge is rather simple, the voice wasn't kidding about the
stairwell going up in flames next. You have seconds to locate it, and run up
to the second floor before the fastest way to the second floor goes up in
 flames.

Can you make it in time?

<Pose Tracker> Tsubasa Seki has posed.

"Yeah, man... it's here." Tsubasa insists on it, as they step into a mostly-empty museum. (It's probably not actually totally empty, given the other Persona-Users investigating; nonetheless, it's still not packed.) "Shit's all over th' Dark Side a Sumaru..."

They're suspicious. They've come to investigate with Ichika. And they brighten up when they see Jun! "Hey, Jun-kun... yeah, ya reckon?" It's just a brief brightening, given what he's telling them. "You be careful too, aight --"

        then the world explodes,

        "WHAFUCK!"

and Tsubasa runs screaming into the nearest exhibit.

Ichika, then, has two tasks: deal with the horrific things she's being told as this space becomes Supernatural, and go drag Tsubasa out from under a cardboard display where they are presently trying to

        you know

        hide from the fire.

        great plan, tsubasa.

        "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

Phoenix would be better suited to this, but Tsubasa's too busy panicking to remember they're magic...

MONAD: Tsubasa Seki has acted with Proficiency toward The Other Side! Base!

<Pose Tracker> Ichika Kawase has posed.

It feels empty. But... it's suspicious. "Oh, Jun-kun--"

The world explodes. "Shit!" Ichika says, jumping straight up for an instant. Then she sees the flames, and she remembers--

...Why does she remember some weird verse?

"The Lion...?"

"Wait, fuck that--"

Ichika lets herself transform, given that this is absolutely a hostile space, and thus the Ogre is the one lowering underneath the display near Tsubasa. "Fire spreads, Tsubasa! If we don't get the fuck out, it'll consume this floor completely! We gotta get to the roof, where it's safe!"

Fire is natural... But...

Not this kind of fire.

"Think of a cool lake. Water, all over. And put on your Phoenix pants and run with me!"

She'd invited Mark to join them, this time; she figured they could use the muscle and smarts. But she didn't expect it to go like this...

<Pose Tracker> Masao Inaba has posed.

        SOME TIME BEFORE

Masao came here at an invitation. This museum is pretty cool, might as well make sure Ichika and Tsubasa don't get into any trouble with... well, he-knows-what (he doesn't know that they-know-what). At some point before the fireworks, there came the mundane challenge of 'y'know what, water closet break.'

         SOME TIME AFTER WATER CLOSET

All right, things suck, and he's got a bone to pick with the Joker Killer - who doesn't - and he can tell with Resonance a lot of Persona-users like himself are here. Maybe that'll be enough to put a stop to things, just... not have stuff go bad, in whatever way it's going to--

There is fire. There's also familiar screaming. There's also familiar cursing, because Ogre and Phoenix both heard it when Eiji's Palace was collapsing and he didn't have the option of catching the bus out. (No one does but the Phantom Thieves, of course, but it was his first ever Collapsing Palace and that earthquake felt... way too familiar.)

"Seki-kun!! Hey! I'm comin'," he would, but the straight A-to-B way to where Tsubasa's screaming gets cut off by fire. He has to go a longer way around. It's extra time to put on the Phoenix pants, as Ogre puts it.

The madman's ranting and raving doesn't register so much in the face of how he let his guard down and now some friends just about preparing to start their lives might get killed by fire, or... worse. He can tell in the air, this is no longer a 'normal' space.

"Friggin'," they're not here to see how he has to dodge something collapsing behind him with a dance-like quality - the save in terms of milliseconds between this and disaster is... uh, well. 'Crazy,' yes.

"Hey!! This way!" He shouts. He thinks he sees silhouettes, but the smoke is thick and... damn it, he hopes that's them, if it's not them...

"WHERE'S OUT" is what Tsubasa has to say about that. It's a valid question, with smoke gathering in the museum...

But when Ogre tries to calm them down, they're able to take a breath (cough cough) and focus on something nicer than burning alive and finally look at her and realise that she's Ogre and she's telling them to do that too and so, heedless to ANY situational awareness, a flurry of blue flames precedes that orange feathery hood.

Luckily, Masao was busy demonstrating that toilets exist in Persona. His mood became 'Great!' ... in the five seconds before it became terrible, because everything is on fire and it's way too nostalgic.

Phoenix seems inured to the nostalgia, though... or maybe they're just too amped up to dwell on it.

"It's cool!" They yell, as they catch up to Masao. "We got Tsubasa-kun an' Ichika-chan out th' door, but that ain't gon' work for us!" Phoenix is just LYING to the ADULT IN THE ROOM like some kind of DELINQUENT TEENAGER. It's fine, this lie is for a good cause. He'd worry!

Luckily, the adult in the room has figured out where to go, and so, the Phantom Thieves follow him up the stairwell.. just in time to outrun it going up in flames.

"SERIOUSLY!" Phoenix yells, as they roll into the next floor. "NOT A FAN!"

MONAD: Ichika Kawase has drawn a new Challenge!

 | Approach Options: Proficiency or Guts |

 | and Scary - Guts Down L1 |
 -==== Challenge =============================================================-

The second floor of the Aerospace museum is already filling with smoke, as
flames from the first floor have already caught hold here, licking along
several particularly flammable spaces. Exhibits about the history of
aviation in Japan and in general are lined up with artifacts of prior
  generations.

Fifteen. Fifteen minutes. That's how long you have to find the kids and get
to the roof. You're not sure why you get that instinct.

You've gotta find those kids! Quick!

Unfortunately there are demons coming down the hallway already. Horse-headed
creatures that stand on two-feet. With a whinny of rage, they come at you,
spreading more flames with Maragi spells.

And that's just the first group of them.

You have to search this floor quickly AND thoroughly, fighting demons as you
go, paths that were open before closing off in flame.

"THAT WAY!" Ogre shouts. But Phoenix gets it... and there's that. "Mark!" Ogre calls. But Phoenix has the cover for getting their civilian selves out. "Right! We gotta get moving!"

Ogre follows Mark to the next floor, and then sees up ahead--demons.

"Tch," Ogre says. "We don't have time for these losers. There's--there's kids in here!"

Ogre steps up to the demons coming around. One throws a Maragi at her, and Ogre just tanks it, her eyes flashing under the mask. "Listen up, motherfuckers!"

"I don't have TIME for your lame-ass shit. You want to deal with me? Then this is how it's gonna be! You get the FUCK off my ass and go find someone else to bug or I will END YOUR SHIT as painfully as I goddamn can!"

...This should provide time for the others to start looking for said kids.
MONAD: Ichika Kawase has acted with Thorn Boss toward Worst Field Trip Ever! Bravery and Efficient!

<Pose Tracker> Masao Inaba has posed.

Masao blinks a few times (some of it's the smoke) as Ogre and (presumably) Phoenix show up. Oh, right, none of the strange masked Persona-users have Resonance that can be read, but... they are Persona-users one and all, too.

The grown-up street artist sucks his teeth, bothered and nervous - but he's just going to have to place faith in them that that's true!

"...Long as they're safe," maybe he should've held it in after al-- yeah, no, no one would be holding that.

         Moving on!!

"And they trapped kids... son of a bitch!" He hears Ogre show concern for the kids, as Orobas (and others, also Orobas) come by and do their little dance to set a Maragi across all of them. Masao grits his teeth as he pulls out his axe, less solidly withstanding it as Ogre puts her foot down.

         ...

Nah, she's tough, he knows this from that groom-to-never-be's Palace. Fuck, he thinks in brief, if he got to be a firefighter instead... well, he won't be.

"Y'heard 'em!" He calls, swinging an arm inward towards one of the few clear-ish routes to one of the side rooms. Ogre's right, he saw some elementary school kids earlier and if they're trapped all the way up here, damn it, and they probably did run for cover.

"...We can't go back down," if they can they sure as hell can't the way they came and frankly he's guessing that's true of any other sensible way down. "Guess we gotta take everyone all the way up as high as we can," and then... uh.

No time to think, got to clear the way.
MONAD: Masao Inaba has acted with Proficiency toward Worst Field Trip Ever! Base!

<Pose Tracker> Tsubasa Seki has posed.

"Wait, there's kids?" Phoenix asks, double-taking to Ogre and Masao. "You sure?!"

... didn't they (hearfeelknow) the warning?

Maybe they just didn't see what Masao saw earlier...

But those horse pricks are throwing fire, and Phoenix burns, but the trick with the Phoenix is they're supposed to burn up and be reborn. Phoenix can be set on fire and Phoenix is normal about it.

        "FUCKASS!"

        Mostly normal about it.

Ogre's capturing their attention, though -- so Phoenix, instead, slips past an Agilao to leap behind a corner. "Fuckin'... kids? For real?" They mutter, before they cough, again, against the building smoke. (Shout-out to Ryuji, who, Phoenix hopes, is doing something better for his lung health than searching a burning building.) "Who brings kids to a war museum?!"

They pull out their lockpicking kit, to get past a door that's jammed in the heat. Jimmying it a little, they manage to crack it open -- and complete the motion by slamming their tabi square into the centre of the door to force it the rest of the way.

"OI!" Phoenix yells, as if this is a normal way to call children.

        Sadly, no kids here...

"Man," they add, looking back to Masao's voice through the smoke. "Smoke rises, y'know? This is gonna suck..."

        Quit squarkin', firebird.

"Yeah," Ogre answers Phoenix. "Field trip or some shit."

Ogre's too busy to answer Phoenix's questions, but on the bright side: the demons do mostly back down with Ogre spamming Intimidate, with a couple of ezceptions that Mark largely tanks.

Ogre mutters, "fifteen minutes... Fifteen minutes."

Why does she know that?

"We can't," Ogre agrees with Mark, go back down.

"This is gonna suck alot," Ogre agrees, but charges up the stairs next with the few people they've found.

Entering an exhibit on the events leading up to Westernisation and the
birth of Aviation in Japan after the Meiji Restoration, you find about a
dozen elementary schoolers huddled close to the floor, due to the smoke
already spilling into the room, even before it was opened.

  "Are you firefighters?"
"Please get us out of here!"
  "I'm scared..."

Some kids are outright crying on the floor, shaking, in little state to even

  hallways.

Now is the time to change that. What do you say to them!?

<Pose Tracker> Masao Inaba has posed.

Orobas gives Masao some guff, and that's a real kick to the head (almost literally). Demons, sometimes.

It takes some searching, and maybe another round with some demons, but somehow above the crackling of fire and the sound of one's heart feeling ready to leap out of one's chest, one can just make out children loudly crying.

"In here!" Masao calls, coughing the once to try and fan smoke out of his face.

The children's queries are myriad, at least among those that aren't just choked tears. Masao comes down to a kneel to one of them, setting his axe down for a moment.

"Hey," he says, "I know you're scared, I mean... who wouldn't be. You all did good stickin' together," at least he hopes this is all of them - and if it isn't, he's hoping the other Persona-users here are already on it. He has to think on it real quick, this is the sort of thing that makes a mark on a youngster's life - and he knows he heard Tsubasa's terrified screaming.

"We'll get you all somewhere safe, okay? We can't stay here..." Because he knows how flammable a lot of the stuff in this room is, and he's already subtly trying to gesture those hiding towards the more dangerous corner closer so that if something erupts there, it won't get them.

"Fifteen minutes...?" Phoenix still seems baffled by that, but they don't linger on it. Because -- "So bad!" -- this sucks.

They have to climb a set of stairs to find some kids, but Masao eventually does find a gaggle of them, and...

        ... the kids are crying.

So Phoenix just kind of looks at Ogre like, 'what do i do', and after that hapless moment they end up crouching by one of the kids that's collapsed on the floor. "Hey," they say, grasping the child's shoulder. "C'mon."

        Snif... waaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!

"Hey," they try again, squeezing his shoulder, a little. That's the point where Phoenix notices the burn scar on his hand, as his palms lower from his face. "... fire's scary, huh?" They ask, realising just why this kid is more useless than the others. "I bet you grabbed th' stove when you were younger, so you know all 'bout it, huh?"

The boy sniffs, and at least lets Phoenix right him to sitting. "Uh-huh..."

"I been there," well, not exactly there, but close enough for government work. "Jus' wanna scream, right? But we gotta get goin'. It's gon' get hotter here. We'll keep you guys safe, aight? Don't worry none."

        "Buh-but you're a bird," the boy sniffles.

"Yup," Phoenix agrees. "So we gon' get to th' roof, an' I'm gonna teach ya a trick to fly off home. C'mon."

Phoenix gives the boy a hug -- without a single complaint about personal space -- and gives him a hand up as they stand back up themself.

In there!

Ogre, on the one hand, is big and scary. On the other hand, she looks really cool. Kids might believe either of these things in the moment. But Ogre, instead, is thinking: these are kids. there's a bunch of them. And so she doesn't say anything at first, which affords her the chance to watch Mark try to comfort them, and Phoenix prove themself... really good with them, actually. Down with being a bird.

"Phoenix..."

She steels herself, and kneels down. "C'mon, kids," she says. "It's scary. But we're going to protect you, no matter what. Let big sis Ogre lead you out. I know I look scary, but that just means I'm gonna scare the monsters away and not let the fire hurt you."

"So take a breath... and then we gotta go fast. Let's move!"

Ogre and Phoenix both look really cool - like bonafide superheroes! ...Kind of? There's something scary and rebellious about them, like in any other circumstance they'd be dressed up as the villains of a tokusatsu show or some such. But this distinction is lost, when small children are looking for someone or something that looks (or is) reliable and capable of getting them to safety.

As Ogre makes the call they 'gotta go fast,' Masao's making a sour face looking to see where fire is starting to get in, and...

"Yeah, what they said!" He says, as Phoenix promises to teach one boy who's already learned of the dangers of fire about a trick to fly home, and he looks all the more eager for it and it is great that no one is turning around to look back at what's about to happen to that room.

A close save... but they still have to get out of here, and they can only go upwards and onwards.

While hurrying through hallways, you reach one of many display rooms
featuring rows of glass cases full of aeronautical displays. Some of them
look old and valuable. In fact... is that one case... unlocked?! Score! You
can open it up and grab some kind of convenient item, like a healing Gem or
Chewing Soul or even a Miracle Soda! (What are these doing in a museum
  display case, you ask? Shhh.)

Except at a second glance, there seem to be alarm wires running under the
case that are partially frayed and melted from the conflagration. If you
open that case, the snapping of those wires might trigger a small blast--not
enough to kill but certainly enough to harm. Certainly enough to destroy
the case and whatever's inside it.

Do you dare risk it and potentially get some vital, maybe even life-saving
item? Or do you have enough problems to deal with right now without
  needlessly adding another?

Thanks to Masao, they know the way up to the next floor -- and thanks to Ogre, they do so quickly. Phoenix, for their part, just makes sure that the world's most traumatised grade-schooler doesn't fall behind the pack.

But as they move through the hallway, Phoenix calls out -- "Hol' up a sec." They've stopped by... the displays?!

C'mon, Phoenix! You might be a Phantom Thief, but this is no time to steal shit!

They can guess what people might be thinking, though, because they pre-empt the frustration: "Look in there. You got them ol' military wool blankets, yeah? That shhh..." a glance to the elementary schoolers, "... tuff is fire-retardant. Like. Smotherin' fires an' --" shit, "y'know." SAFE!

"Wires are jus' kinda f--fiddly, gimme a sec..." They pull out their lockpicking kit, trying to fiddle with the wiring and get into the cabinet.

Mark at least is keeping an eye on the fire. And Ogre is glad for that, and for his presence--if it were just the two of them,s he'd be more worried about keeping all these kids together. And speaking of keeping them together, Ogre skids to a stop as Phoenix calls out. "Huh?" she asks.

Then, before she can protest, "Oh, that's--Oh, yeah. Good thinking." She looks to the blankets, looks to the kids.

"You handle the wires," she says, "I'll grab the blankets real quick when you do, in case it blows."

"With fires like this, sometimes just using water makes them worse," she explains. "Smothering them can work better."

"Mark," she says, "You see any other demons closing in?"

<Pose Tracker> Masao Inaba has posed.

Masao's a bit further ahead of the others in the moment, when the prospect for TREASURE rears its beautiful, luminous, profitable, precious, useful head.

"Hey, what's goin' on," he looks over his shoulder--

AVERAGE GROWN-UP - Shouting, yelling, talking about how this is wrong to do in the moment

MASAO "MARK" INABA, NOT THE AVERAGE GROWN-UP - He actually sees what's in that display case.

"Yeah, get that if you can," enabling!! "She's got the right of it," gesturing to Ogre, as he's been given inquiry about whether any demons are closing in. He shakes his head. "They better not! ...Make it quick!"

He gestures to the kids wondering what the hold-up is, trying to take their attention away from the case so that they don't inquire as to what's in there and why they're stopping briefly to open it. If he thinks something's about to explode, don't worry, he'll rush to try and pull anyone back that needs it.

Luckily for these punk kids, their adult escort is Masao, and he actually gets why Phoenix would stop. With him distracting the kids to keep them out of the way, Phoenix is able to caaaarefully slip the wires off of the slide door sensor, and when they bark: "Now!", Ogre's right there to grab them real quick. With Masao in charge of hurrying the kids off, Ogre hauls those blankets up, and Phoenix...

... Phoenix grabs a medal that was in the case beside the blankets which looks hella valuable.

Listen. Listen. They're a bird, it's shiny, and they want it.

Luckily, they manage to get away before anything goes catastrophically wrong.

 -==== Challenge =============================================================-

You rush into one of the hanging displays in the Aerospace Museum. A
life-sized model airplane hangs from the ceiling over an open floor plan. A
portion of the floor acts as a walkway that leads right up to it. There's no
reason to approach it, given that the place is actively on fire and you
still have a ways to go before you reach the roof.

But... you could swear--some of you--that you hear a young girl screaming
for help from over where the model airplane is. No matter how much you look,
though, there's no one there. Eerie.

Not everyone will hear. Just those who might be getting reminded of a past
that never was, if they were a part of it. Those who wouldn't are simply met
  with another empty room.

Whether you hear or not, do you move on, or do you double down? Tick tock...

Mark is cool... he is not the average grown-up!

"Right, quick!" Ogre agrees with Mark, and waits on Phoenix--Phoenix, who does it just right. Ogre notices the medal, but...

What? It's gonna burn anyway.

"Move it, move it!" she reiterates for them and the kids, and then they rush forward--

A hanging display. An airplane. And Ogre looks up sharply, hearing--

"Is there a girl up there!?" Ogre asks, but--doesn't see one, now. "...Wait, what?" she asks, because there's no one even close. But...

But she remembers--

She remembers being here with a stroller, a day it wasn't exploding. She remembers something, just on the edge of her consciousness--

Tears mar Ogre's vision for a brief moment before she blinks them away, not even sure why they were there.

"Smoke must be getting to me. Come on, let's go!"

She leans back, puffs up her chest, and says, "Ogres don't hold back from a little smoke!"

<Pose Tracker> Masao Inaba has posed.

"Huh?!" Masao stops, looking up after Ogre shouts their concern about a girl being up there. He does due diligence, walking a circle around where the model airplane is. He doesn't think it's something someone would've hallucinated seeing, even it being this hot and smoky.

"There's nobody here," he says, but there's no mistaking the change in posture and body language of Ogre, who looks like they're going through something. They don't have much time to really mill around, in fact practically none, as a few of the schoolchildren present seem confused andor concerned as to why they're slowing down.

"Hey," he speaks up as he coughs a few times, "yeah, you're... you're doin' good," he says, "what's goin' on here ain't a thing I'd wish on anyone." It's stressful. The place is on fire, they can really only retreat higher and hope there's some safer way out of there, like firefighters ready to get everyone down or something.

...All while having to deal with a nasty son of a bitch they're not going to let get away this time.

         "C'mon," he gestures forward.

"I don't hear nothin'," Phoenix scowls, as they look over the display. Still, Ogre heard it, so they take a deep breath, and... "OI! ANYONE UP THERE!? YUH--hkkkoffhagh," oh no taking a deep breath and shouting in the heavy smoke has done exactly what one might expect to Phoenix and Phoenix's fabulous lung capacity.

Once they're done hacking, they say: "Mark-san's right... but it's cool, Ogre. You don't wan' leave none a them kids behind, yeah?" Phoenix does a quick gesture to the smalls. "It's cool, I been keepin' a head count. We still got six."

They are high up, though. That fire is roaring, beneath them. And Phoenix takes a moment to look down at that barbeque down on the lower floors, from the open-plan balcony.

        "..."

Phoenix, Phoenix reminds Phoenix, can't be killed by flames, because Phoenixes rise from the ashes.

Masao's urging them on, though, and Phoenix nods, turning to him again. "Less' go."

They do another head count, just to be sure.

<Pose Tracker> Ichika Kawase has posed.

No one was there at all. Is she just seeing things? Ogre can't be sure. But she can't be sure of the rest, too. And Mark... Mark moves to help her. Phoenix, too. "R-right," Ogre answers, and she just--

She doesn't understand why she's so sad. She wants to cry, and she has no idea why. The sense of loss is almost too much to take.

But they go. They go on, and at the third-floor's entrance. A sense of having...

Ogre feels it, that heartbeat pulse. Nausea.

They're just repeating the same...

"..."

"Hey," Ogre says. "You two..."

"You go on ahead."

"There's something really bad up there. And we can't take these kids into it."

"Soon as you clear the way, we'll be right behind you."

"I promise."

Her heart hurts. But this...

This is something she can do differently. Differently from what?

Differently.
