<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.

There's a dinner on this evening; some powerful people will be in attendance. The Rengedai hotel where things are hosted is up-scale and fancy; entrees are served by staff in sharp uniforms, while the women wear fine dresses, and the men, expensive suits. Yua feels on display, in her beautiful green gown, emeralds at her ears and jade laid into her choker. Even her shoes are fancy... though it's lucky her dress is long enough to cover those compression socks.

        (There's no escape.)

She chats to a chief's wife as Kimitake talks to the man himself, beside her, and keeps her complaints about standing to herself. "... I'm very proud of Kimi-san's work," she smiles, to the woman opposite. "He's able to help many women just like me... he's stopped a lot of awful people."

"Oh, that's right, you were kidnapped by those gangs...! You poor thing," the chief's wife commiserates, with just a little too much interest. "You must have been so relieved when he rescued you!"

Yua looks down; it wasn't Kimitake who rescued her. Her smile, at least, obscures her discomfort. But he rescues her from the lie, as he overhears them, and puts an arm around her. "I'm just grateful she's safe," he says, and Yua hears the way he doesn't take credit, with relief. (She hears that, and not the space he leaves to let the others assume they're right.) More mixed are her feelings on the way he leans over to kiss her crown; it's all an act, but --

"Kimi-san!" Yua blushes with embarrassment and shame; but she still remembers to smile, and so manages to make it seem demure. "We're in public...! Oh," she sighs, and leans into him, a touch more heavily; lie or not, she's been on her feet too long, and that's before she catches the chief and his wife whispering about how cute they are together.

"Ah, are you tired...?" Kimitake wonders, kindly, as he supports her, before he looks up to the other couple. "Would you excuse us a moment...? My wife is pregnant... she needs to sit down."

"You're so considerate," the chief's wife notices, smiling. "We'll see you soon!"

"Come," Kimitake urges Yua, steering her out into the hotel's back garden. There aren't many patrons out here, though staff do route around rather than interrupting the party proper. He takes Yua to a bench by a hedge, and sits her down, before flagging one of those staff members. "Could you fetch my wife some water?"

Yua settles down, watching the staff member bustling away. "Thank you," she says, hands folded in her lap. "It was a little overwhelming..."

"Will you make it through dinner?" Kimitake asks, and there is a thread of expectation through what acts like patience. "Tonight is important for me, Yua-san."

"I'll be fine," Yua assures him, looking down at her hands. "Um..."

"What is it?" He asks, and he's still standing over her.

"... did you have to kiss me like that?" She asks, quietly. "It's improper..."

"It's just for appearances," and Yua supposes he must be reassuring her, even though she feels a little dismissed. "His wife is a romantic. It will play well for me."

And Yua isn't all that comfortable, but she nods, anyway. "All right..."

"I'll let you rest out here for a little while," Kimitake says, turning away. "Someone will fetch you wate shortly. Be ready when we're seated for dinner."

"Thank you," Yua says, again, as she looks down at her hands; the back of her right hand is covered by that fabric decoration, stretching from ring to bracelet, and three jade bracelets join it on her opposite hand... leading up to that mokume gane wedding ring, all swirling in shades of gold.

        ... she's a display piece. For conversation.

She must feel bad because of those mood swings...

<Pose Tracker> Shiryuu Ryouhara has posed.

The young man was preternaturally _tall_, enough so that there may have been doubts about his inclusion amid the service. It's really through a whip-lean and unobtrusive countenance that keeps him under the radar, that sublimely subservient way he silently bows, acceding to guest demand invisibly.

On the surface, he is doting, keeping close watch over his assigned section of guests, enough so that it may have been far too easily forgotten how he is just a replacement for Igorou, one who spoke very little and moved very fast.

Even so, as a new attendant, he could certainly be forgiven for being a hair too close to the guests, enough so to overhear conversation, and the lovely way the police departments tend to mingle the best. The romantic way a husband handles and cares for his wife, a charmed couple by any accounting -- most of all, the accounting of their conversation partners.

One would be forgiven for him taking the glass and pitcher from the attendant on the way through the back route around, back to the guests who just left through the garden, the polite way he interjected. "I'll take over for this... pregnancies need extra care," he assures the man. "And the Itos have requested Masumi SGP.."

That unobtrusive, calm man is fitted with a disoriented stare only for moments -- it's interesting how much a waved hand can communicate in a moment, two. There's nothing but the reflection of the server's uneasy face in the lenses of those golden-rimmed glasses.

This of course, means that they are relatively alone by the time Yua receives the requested water, the young man coming so -very- close to Kimitake as he passes by. A tiny, small nod, a hurried rush to see the guest's instructions more swiftly carried out.

Rather, is he young? He looks fine and sharp in that suit, the waiter's towel draped over his shoulder. But he seems to be going gray rather early -- there are salt streaks in his black hair already. The crystal glass is set down at a hip table nearby. From the pitcher, chilled (but not iced) water is poured into the glass, using the towel to insulate the pour from his body heat. A tiny slide, then the waiter catches up with the bench were the guest's wife sits, all done up in shades of pretty green.

The glass is lifted, held in a towel draped over a hand.

"They say," the young man in the glasses begins, presenting the glass to Ijuuin after a brief inspection, "that jade is a protective stone, ne...?"

<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.

Even Kimitake can bring himself to employ foreign maids. Surely there is more variance allowed in the help; particularly when one realises that that young(?) man in particular certainly is Japanese, despite his unusual tallness. See? He knows how to carry himself. He respects the way of things. And so, he passes unnoticed...

The people attending this party certainly aren't the type to worry after the affairs of the staff. Most of them, at least; Yua very well might. Luckily, she's insulated from those conversations, just as surely as Shiryuu's towel insulates his glass.

(Kimitake doesn't even realise how close he passed to a vision of death. He doesn't see the help.)

Looking down on herself, it takes her a moment to realise that (the) help has come to her. "Oh!" She exclaims, softly, lifting her head; her single visible eye widens, in recognition, when she sees that silvery hair. "Shishi? You're working here...?"

Another moment, and she even remembers to take the glass, her hands curling around it; he might have protected the glass from his body heat, but hers leeches into it freely, as she centres herself around the chill.

"I thought so," she sighs, considering her water, with a smile that's far more lukewarm than the nice, cool drink. "But..." ... but what? What is it about this situation that leaves her feeling unprotected? Kimitake's taking care of her, and the Shihaisha himself is here to keep an eye on things! "Well," Yua's smile strengthens, looking up to Shiryuu. "I guess it really did work! You're here, right? And Kimi-san made sure I wouldn't have to push too far with all that socialising... he's really nice about letting me step out."

Well, it's true that he often escorts her to a quiet place before she gets overstimulated. And Yua is certainly free to call the manner in which he did so nice, much in the way that she is free to call denial a river in Egypt.

She knows English, she'd even understand that joke.

<Pose Tracker> Shiryuu Ryouhara has posed.

To most, he is little more than a ghost, a odd curiosity, whose two-toned eyes are hidden in the lightly tinted lenses of a set of glasses that are certainly not needed in the slightest. Humble people don't stand out. It would be impolite.

There's a vast, vast gulf between the unassuming waiter and the shihaisha of Iizuna's steel.

"Iih..." He makes a face at the diminutive-but-definitely-not nickname, though he doesn't really see fit to object. Arguing with Yua is absolutely not satisfying. "Working is kind of a strong word," he guesses, scratching into his colored hair. It's a poor excuse for black dye, truthfully, but Shiryuu has little patience for disguise on good days. Even so, the onmitsu is not apparently bold enough to continue leaning over the 'guest' -- sitting alongside her would not be proper at a glance, and there are a range of other matters that would also arouse suspicion.

However, even with the need to be discreet in mind, it's not really clear why the boy settles down on a knee next to Ijuuin -- lowering the pitcher as he rests an arm on his knee. Is it really for the sake of appearances, or...

"There's not a lot of danger here, and I've done worse menial labor," the boy thinks. "So," he concludes, "it's only natural that I use this situation to conduct my reviews."

Ah yes. Apparently Shiryuu supervises the work of his onmitsu regularly. And, in this particular case, watching over the two periodically lets Ryouhara make other, more salient reasonings.

Mmm. "Kind as always," Shiryuu recognizes. "But... is it really okay with Ijuuin that that person does as he wills?" He doesn't know the hierarchy, but even a clan of mad fools would respect supralunar power over mundane gladhanding. Right?

"We are bound to protect all four of you, otherwise..."

Shiryuu doesn't actually say anything more. But he *snaps* his towel between his hands, ever so quietly.

It's a interesting way of broaching the tender topic of the complicated involvement between the Ryouhara and Ijuuin. It still seems a little overkill, for what would be an ultimately minor slight in one of a very wide field of interpretations. But then again, there's a matter of knowing context... and of course, Ryouhara has never been one to receive minor slights well at all. Right?

..it's also painfully clear what Ryouhara can do with a bolt of cloth.

<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.

"You're being modest," Yua encourages him. "I'm sure you're inhabiting the role perfectly. Why, with your hair dyed, I didn't even recognise you for a moment...! You look a lot older when it's grey instead of silver, huh?" She giggles. "I guess it must be hard to change your colours that much..." Is that a metaphor, or just the literal truth?

        Yes.

She does look a little surprised to see him kneeling down, though -- a touch embarrassed, not entirely sure whether this is supposed to be the proper way of things. Still, she smiles, again. "Your reviews...? Mmmm... I haven't seen much of your people, but that means they get a good review, right? Since I can't find them!" Here, she giggles again, fingers veiling her red lips. "Well, I did meet them when I came out of the Dark Hour after a mission... I guess it's kind of unfair to disappear on them when they can't move! They stayed with me until Mimi picked me up... everything was okay. I got limes!" She... got limes... in the Dark Hour...?

        is yua real

She tilts her head, at his subtle query. "Huh...? Of course you're protecting Kimi-san too! He's still an Ijuuin, even if he's from the branch family!" Yua has to establish that very quickly, because, of course, she does know what he can do, and the alarm in her eye over that snap is plain to see. Her head tilts the other way, metronomically easing that alarm, as she considers further. "I mean, I am, too, right...? Since I married him... hooouuuuuu, I don't really know how this works," she sighs, and at length finally sips that water. (Pause for evaluation... ... ... ... and when she's pretty sure her stomach's handling water fine, she takes a few more big gulps.)

"And of course Mimi's okay with him... she loves her family more than anything, except maybe me," Yua goes on, though her smile grows a touch smaller. "Um, and Father's okay with him, too, you know? If he wasn't, he wouldn't have given me to him in marriage." 'Given her to him'... well, arranged marriage is hardly unusual in the old ways. (They're certainly old; the way Yua addresses him, chichi-ue, hasn't been in common usage for an era.)

Her fingers tap, against the glass. Tap, tap...

"... well," Yua admits, quietly, "sometimes we argue a little, and... and I don't tell Mimi about that, because it would be really hard for her to get angry at her family when she cares for them so much. But everything's okay tonight! I -- I think," Yua adds, second-guessing herself. (She's been cued to do so, over time.) "I guess I'll find out when we drive back... if things didn't go so well, that's usually when we talk about it." Why does she look so glum about talking...?

<Pose Tracker> Shiryuu Ryouhara has posed.

"...ieh?" Shiryuu looks genuinely perplexed for a moment. His tone is watery, noncommittal. "Silver..." His expression flattens with the idea, lips pressing together into that thin, neutral line. Though the boy's hair actually shines with a -very- delicate, flashy sheen when the light hits it just right, he's never particularly thought of it as something cool like 'silver,' or anything dramatic like that. It's always seemed more of a particularly muddy grey to him.

Like what it looks like now, after the absolute trash dye job. Hopefuily, it will wash out entirely.

Ultimately, Shiryuu seems a little unprepared to discuss his performance as opposed to the performance of his spies, of which at least one is usually positioned near the main house Ijuuin's treasure. "If you do notice one of them," Shiryuu says, "please make a note of it, but disregard them. We are unfortunately limited in the natural fashion when considering supralunar phenomenon, but they are trained for that, and you should not see them at all."

The unspoken implication is that Shiryuu would be very cross if one of his shinobi got spotted unintentionally.

He does pause. "... I'm glad you had limes."
Certain things, he's learned, are more important to Yua than others.

Of course, Shiryuu's extreme perspective aside, any visible chafing at the idea that Kimitake Ijuuin is still a name that has to be acknowledged is kept to a polite minimum, the boy's brown eyes rising over the rims of his glasses with some leashed severity.

"Of course," he finally admits. "The nature of our agreement is an honorbound covenant. With it, it allows us to lay down our lives for Hiroki, yourself and Miho." This part is the benefit, the part that weighs against the cost. "It's only natural that 'that person' would also be included," he adds, and it's very clear, despite his phrasing, that's he's unsure about what that means just yet.

It would be much easier to think about in certain circumstances, if the order were different. But there was a certain 'necessity' to things, linked to Shiryuu's own proclivities...

"Mmm." Less particularly impressed with the laundry list of people who have given their approval to Kimitake, Shiryuu's particularly cavalier in the way his eyes dip, watching her tap her glass thoughtfully with lowered eyes.

".... as shihaisha of the Ryouhara clan, it is in my nature to be unswayed but by my own will and my own honor. In a complex situation, a sword is needed to cut through the fog," Ryouhara decides. "The lord of Ijuuin is the same."

Then he tops off her glass with a careful pour.

The cool water chills the faceted crystal under her fingertips, but is added slowly, so as not to spill or overflow. The tiny trickle flows as Ryouhara thinks aloud.

"You know, the clan Ryouhara was once a branch house, of a greater, crueler clan," he explains, on a thought. "However, through perseverance, they eventually changed their station in life. So. While it is true that in the eyes of the clan, there is an impassable gulf between 'branch house' and 'main house,' you are the person whose heart belongs to one thing, and your name belongs to another. Names are mutable things, themselves circumstances capable of shifting with time. If what I know is true, I should think hearts are less so."

<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.

"Mm! Silver! Just like the moon!" Yua nods, and her enthusiasm is entirely genuine. "Isn't the moon a super ninja thing, anyway...? So of course the Shihaisha would have silver hair!" She is respecting his position, but she's so perky about it...

She listens to his account of his shinobi, rubbing her finger against the glass. "Don't worry," she says, "I won't interrupt them, even if I see someone. They're doing important work! Though... did someone follow us to Okinawa? That's kind of funny... they must have had such a big day during pilgrimage...! Hee hee, but then they got to relax, huh?" Yua giggles some more, as she contemplates: "Holiday ninja...!"

Her legs tap the ground, with enthusiastic engagement, as she adds: "They were dragon limes. We thought it was a Dragon Line, but actually, it was a sale! Isn't that funny?"

Still... 'that person'... Yua's movement stills, hearing that. "Kimi-san is still an Ijuuin," she insists, again. "He... I mean, it's not like he's doing it without getting anything out of the deal, but he is still helping to protect Hiroki... he needs to have a father."

She bites the inside of her lip, considering the boy in front of her. "It sounds like you both have a lot of responsibilities to juggle," she says, thoughtfully. "I don't really understand all the details... but I'm really trying." The internal dramas of a clan... they're so much different to small-town logic.

The water pours out, and Yua watches it, quite fascinated; she's always been a little uncoordinated at things like this, perhaps oweing to her hand, which really just makes it lucky how she has a maid. "Thank you," she says, quietly, as she brings the full glass to her lips again. Sip, sip...

(It's important she drinks enough water. With her condition, she can get dehydrated easily.)

"Mm... you know a lot of true things," Yua surmises, listening to his thoughts. "I don't know if Kimi-san is in that bad a position... he's only not part of the main line of succession because his father was second-born. You know? Just, I guess, something as simple as that meant he'd never lead the family... and he doesn't get the same opportunities Mimi gets." She scrunches up her lips, humming uncertainty through them, and takes another long sip of her water. "... I think," she adds, at length, "Kimi-san's probably kind of jealous... but he's an honourable man, so he doesn't complain. If he didn't explain it plainly to me, I wouldn't have even known it was a factor at all... I guess I'm blind to a lot of things in your world."

<Pose Tracker> Shiryuu Ryouhara has posed.

"Mou.." Shiryuu is still fairly cagey about Yua's reasoning. "H...hey, you shouldn't talk about the shinobi so freely..." he frets instead, fairly unsure about which edict to enforce to put an end to the situation. People have been caught up in shinobi wars for less, and this isn't really ideal, besides.

He's supposed to be a humble waiter in Rengedai, isn't he...

"A Dragon Line sounds like a fearsome technology," he decides to change the subject instead of address it head on, as these things won't work against a tender personality like hers. Even so -- it is almost entirely clear to the standard observer that Shiryuu and Yua aren't thinking the same thing when they say 'Dragon Line.' But it does have the effect of distracting Shiryuu almost as well; and lightening the mood such that the pepper-haired boy is more apt to grudgingly accept what he's told.

"It's no problem," Shiryuu finally replies after listening, carefully levelling off the pour. The pitcher is lifted, and the boy turns away, to set it on that hip table a few steps off. He lifts the towel in his hands, careful to fold it longwise once, then drape the length across his forearm. It preserves the illusion, for the time being, of a waiter not very deeply invested in conversation with a wife of an Ijuuin. These sorts of things could reflect poorly.

"Mmm. I'm glad 'he' is honorable," he supposes, of the second-born son. "We're fortunate in that... it would make things difficult, otherwise. There is much that can happen inside of the workings of a family such as the Ijuuin, something on which I have insight. ...but..."

Thoughtlessly, the boy raises his arm above his waist, letting the towel hang neatly. He's faced away from her, watching the scattering of other guests in the distance.

"...While it is true that a child can live an exemplary, peerless life cared for even inside of the rigorous strictures of a clan. But... all too easily, children can become pawns between houses. Remember that the 'parents' of Hiroki... are you and Miho. No one else, for any other reason. Anything else is just an illusion. Everything we do in the dark is to support that incontrovertible fact."

It's a strange thing to explain, isn't it? But Ryouhara seems to put particular emphasis on that fact, above anything else.

<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.

"Oh, excuse me," Yua smiles, even as she glances aside. "You're right, I shouldn't say something like that where people can hear..."

There's no one in earshot, but Yua's pretty sure she understands the implicit statement. It's about how ninja are SECRET and Yua can't just TELL ON HIM! ... right? That's the problem, right???

        Right.

"It is!" Yua chirps, instead, of the Dragon Lines. "Mimi can tell you all about it!" Because, of course, it's Miho's scheme; Yua's just facilitating it. "But Dragon Limes are apparently a demon's favourite...! I thought I'd make them into pies, for negotiating!" She -- she thought she'd make the demons -- pies?

why is she such a housewife

Yua, at least, has some understanding of the theatre; she sips at her glass, instead of looking up to Shiryuu, immediately. He's very deliberate, she reflects, inside herself. Maybe if Yua were a ninja, she'd be better at acting...

Still... much can happen. Past the doors of the hotel, Kimitake can be seen chatting with the chief and his wife; they laugh, in response to his joke, and perhaps he doesn't seem so fake to them.

He does not look back to his wife.

And Yua takes a moment to push down the thought -- that maybe he isn't entirely honourable.

She listens, instead, as Shiryuu goes on. "That's right," Yua nods, firmly, though she speaks to her glass. "Hiroki is Mimi's son... and mine! Even if it turns out he's our daughter... it's our baby! Besides... I promised I'd bear Kimi-san his own child, later," Yua adds, thoughtfully; a touch reluctantly. "So... we must all know who Hiroki comes from."

<Pose Tracker> Shiryuu Ryouhara has posed.

He nods slowly, as Yua's perceived attention shifts away from him. Shiryuu has many reasons for why he says and does what he does, but very rarely is it clear -- the boy seems unperturbed, and perfectly happy to discuss Dragon Lime pie -- or at the very least, tilt his mouth into a fist to quell a tiny ghost of a laugh. A pie for a demon -- for a boy who most frequently negotiates with the edge of a sword, the preposterousness is not beyond him.

But, the mention of Miho does pique his attention. So a Dragon Line isn't just a powerful fancy of a ninkou, eh... the boy's ear turns towards Yua conspiratorially, as if to hear her better.

Hm. Even with their arrangement, it's to be expected that there are still some secrets kept...

"Mmm. It's natural, to feel that way. Hold onto it, that feeling... a parent's love will fill a child's heart with perseverance and fortitude, enabling that child to become a good shepherd for the future. It's ... the first kind of 'bond,' I think. Having it is more important than anything else, especially in the kind of situation a child can find themselves in, being part of a clan."

If Yua looks really closely, she'll notice that Ryouhara's attention is hardly focused on the middle distance, but on Kimitake, once he finds him just inside the hotel. The boy's expression is flat and neutral, all thought and consideration.

To consider the idea of such a person conceiving a child... it's difficult to think about.

"That person is in an unfortunate position," Shiryuu observes plainly. His voice is neutral, but serious. "A son may bolster his standing, if my information is correct. But ... it shouldn't be that a child is conceived in obligation alone. Some element of compassion needs to...mmm."

Shiryuu shakes his head. "...apologies," he surrenders quietly.
"It's not for someone such as me to muse. There are some of us for whom the future is far less obliged to be kind. We can only do what we must... right?"

<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.

Yua keeps many secrets, but she is at her core quite an honest woman; she would prefer to speak the truth. And Yua's truth is, at times, that she feels she can conquer her fear of demons through the power of baking.

She smiles, hearing Shiryuu's reflection on bonds, though she doesn't realise where he's looking until she looks up to him in turn. Following his gaze, she sees 'him'... and there's a little shake of her head, as she turns her attention back down to her glass. (Sip.) "... I'll love him no matter what," Yua promises Shiryuu, then. "Mimi will, too... she'll keep him safe."

Still... there needs to be that element of compassion. "His children will still be mine," Yua insists, quietly, and reveals a little of the debate in her choice of descriptor. "I'll love them, just the same... I know our family will look very strange, but it will be good for Hiroki to have siblings, too." There's that 's' sound, again, sibilant as a snake. "Mm... we must do the best we can with the arrangements we can make..."

Yua shakes her head, again, looking up to Shiryuu. "But it's all right," she assures him. "Worrying about the children... it's very kind of you. I promise I'll make room for kindness in their lives, as long as I draw breath."

        That won't be forever.

But she can promise up 'til that point.

<Pose Tracker> Shiryuu Ryouhara has posed.

His eyes are sharp -- the boy's stare, even idle, is unerring, watching the older man inside with a razor thought in mind. And truthfully, there isn't a lot that can distract him from his gravitas, as the shihaisha is not well known for being dissuaded from an opinion easily.

But harsher thoughts are broken in the droplet of melancholy that falls in the wake of Okinawan determination. It shows, in the way he pauses, softening countenance as he looks away from Kimitake.

"....you have a mother's soul," Shiryuu decides, turning back towards the pitcher. It's not ... precisely kind, or precisely cold, the way he says it. Glimpses of him barely help reveal which is which, if even at all -- a tumble of messily dyed hair falls over his glasses, as he picks up the pitcher without a smile.

He finally nods. "We can entrust the future to people like you, and so long as that's true... we'll be able to exist there on the periphery, watching over you. The clans will be less of a problem, while people such as 'myself' and 'Miho' exist."

He checks the pitcher. Despite the thick glass, the water's begun to warm. "I'll be here for some time, yet... stay off of your feet as much as you can," he tells Yua. "Don't be ashamed."

"A performance should be freedom on the dancefloor, not food for the fake."

The boy will be gone, long between this word and that.

<Pose Tracker> Yua Ijuuin has posed.

Yua smiles, up to Shiryuu; it might not be precisely warm, but she can't hear it as cold, despite the shihaisha's distance. Whether it is merely her interpretation or the deeper truth, Yua feels that Shiryuu appreciates her drive. "Thank you," she says, then, quietly.

"I'm counting on you both... I feel safer when you're looking out for me."

She's still smiling, as she looks down at her glass of water. "Okay," she says, gently --

-- though she doesn't realise he's gone until she looks back up.

        ("He's really very good...")

Yua will take some more time, in the gardens, before they're called to be seated for dinner; a little time for herself, before the performance starts up again.

She would like to go on stage, she thinks, after she's had Hiroki.

She would like to perform the way she likes to, even once...

And they're thoughts she can have, feeling secure with the Ryouhara around.
