- Summary: While enjoying a trip to the Christmas Village, Jun and Ichika get lunch at Gekkoukan's maid cafe and have a chat about the colleges they want to attend after they graduate in the spring.

It's nice to do an activity with your friends. Tsubasa couldn't make it today, but Jun mentioned to Ichika that they wanted to stop by the Christmas Village school festival event to do some Christmas shopping, and Ichika said she was going too to support her sister, who's involved with it. The two agreed to go together, and so... they've arrived!
And already done some shopping. Jun's picked up presents for his parents and his friends, played the ball toss game and gotten a couple more smaller items for gifts, gotten them all wrapped at the gift wrap station, bought some raffle tickets (mostly for the excuse to look for Tatsuya, who he didn't really expect to be there but couldn't help hoping), talked a little to Umie in passing...
Now it's time to sit and rest for a while, and Ichika wanted to hit up the maid cafe, where her sister is working. Jun's friends with Ririka too, so naturally he's also interested. The two of them get a table there, just before the cafe gets slammed. The two of them only get a chance to share a wave and a "hi!" with her before it's just too busy for that.
"Let's see--I believe I'll get the fruits sando with a cup of tea," Jun muses, looking over the menu board. He looks over at Ichika. "What are you considering?"

It is nice to do things with friends. Ichika was thinking about it anyway, but Ririka being involved just sealed the deal. and now that Juna lso wants to go...
Ichika's picked up a few things too; presents for Tsubasa and Ryuji in particular, something for Ririka and her parents (especially Mom, who is at some 29 weeks now on their new sibling...), gotten them wrapped, tried the raffle, talked to some people, and gathered some info for a story on the event.
They may not be meeting as a Club during finals week, but she can get some material together to hand things out the day before break.
Ichika's sitting there, and laughs a little. "Popular," she reflects. "Not that surprising, though. Little sis has some cute girls in her class." Ichika doesn't say it particularly lasciviously; she's straight, right? It's just a true fact!
But hmmm... "Same sando," Ichika thinks. "But I'll go for their hot chocolate. I'm kind of in the mood for double sweets."

Plus, after all the tutoring Jun has done for Ichika, there's something nice about doing something fun together before finals hit on Monday. It's important to rest and get your energy back up!
"She does," Jun agrees, who likewise doesn't mean it lasciviously. You can be gay--or straight--and acknowledge the objective cuteness of a girl. 'Cute' is not the same as 'attractive.' "Gekkoukan High School seems to have a lot of spirit to it in general."
There seemed to be a weird bit of tension at the gift wrap station, but Jun decided he'd rather not stick his nose into another school's drama.
"I just recently met Kirijo-san, their student council president, in fact. She's quite a respectable woman," Jun continues. "Had I known her three years ago, maybe I would have chosen to take Gekkoukan's entrance exam." He shrugs a bit. "I don't regret the choice I made, though."
Ichika chooses the double sweets. Jun sighs good-naturedly. "I was considering the same. I love chocolate, but I'm not in the mood for double sweets, and none of the savory options appeal to me. Alas."

There is!! ...And Ichika does appreciate that tutoring. It means maybe she has a shot at entrance exams...
"It does," Ichika says. "You know, I used to go there--for middle school, I mean. And since they're got Kirijo-san..." Of course, Ichika would remember Mitsuru from middle school, even though it hasn't come up yet. "It's a good school."
And Mitsuru! Ichika grins. "Yeah, she's really impressive," Ichika agrees. "I wasn't in her class, but it was hard not to know about her. ...I don't regret where i ended up either, though. I couldn't have started a paper at Gekkoukan or Sevens."
Ichika laughs faintly. "Fair," she says. "Then it'll be more for me!"

"Oh?" Jun says when Ichika shares that personal tidbit. He knows she used to live in the Port Island area--her parents still live there, and he's been to the area to meet up with Tsubasa before--but that doesn't mean Gekkoukan's the only school in the area. He smiles when she confirms it's a good school. "I'm glad you had a good experience."
Of Mitsuru, Jun replies, "She seems like the kind of person who naturally stands out, no matter what she does. Of course, as the heiress to the Kirijo Group, perhaps that's inevitable." After all, she also leads SEES, a group of Persona Users... But since Ichika is clearly not one herself, Jun keeps that to himself.
"Why do you say that?" he does wonder of the paper, though.
As for chocolate: "Now you're going to make me want to change my order to hot chocolate!" he faux-complains, smiling. "Ah well. I spotted a specialty grocery store on the way here. Maybe I'll pick up some chocolates to save for later there."
One of the waitresses stops by; Jun and Ichika will have the chance to put in their orders. Once she's bustled away, Jun looks back to his companion. "So how are you feeling about finals? To say nothing of college entrance exams." He does know she's hoping to get into college, after all.

"Yeah. But I wanted to try to stand out, to do something on my own, so I applied at Sevens instead. And, well... You know how that went." She's talked about it before; the rumors have talked about it before. She smiles back though. "But it was. Maybe in another life I'd have stayed."
But Mitsuru, "Yeah. Who knows? Was she raised to stand out, or is she just that sort of person naturally? Couldn't say." But she's leading SEES--Ichika knows that much, even though ostensibly she isn't a Persona-user. ...SEES, who might oppose them in the future...
"Well," Ichika answers, "They already have papers. I couldn't start one. I'd just have to join the one that was already there. And that'd be cool, but it'd be different, too."
Ichika laughs at the complaint. "Almost too late! ...Oh, nice idea. Maybe I should... I got Mom some. I think she should have something sweet."
But Ichika puts in her order. And Jun looks at her. "I feel... worried," she admits, "But not like, lost and helpless. It's like, it's going to be a fight, but it's not a fight I'm totally unprepared for, if that makes sense? Thanks mostly to you."

Jun's smile turns into a sympathetic grimace for a brief moment when Ichika mentions how things went for her at Sevens. Still, she doesn't keep the mood dour, so neither does he.
Even if the phrase in another life makes him think of some things he'd rather not.
"I imagine someone who got to know her better would know," Jun muses. "We have some interests in common, as it turns out, so that might just be me." He smiles and jokes, "If that happens, I'll let you know my analysis and conclusions."
Ichika explains the difference--that the experience is about starting a newspaper, not simply joining one. "Ahhh, I see what you mean now. Yes, that is a different experience. There's a fine feeling about innovating something, isn't there?"
Ichika mentions her mom and sweets. "Ah, as I recall, she's pregnant currently, isn't she? How's that coming along? She's staying healthy, I hope?"
But there's also the question about how prepared she feels for all the exams coming up. Not fully prepared, but like she has a fighting chance at least, it turns out. Jun nods and smiles again. "No, it's all thanks to your willingness to put in the work. No amount of tutoring would help without that. I just helped guide you a bit, that's all. Still, if that guidance has helped focus you, I'm glad."

Ichika's not going to dwell on it. There's no need to, now.
...And she isn't quite aware of that part.
"Hmm. That'd be cool," Ichika reflects. "Totally, let me know. If it doesn't betray her confidence or whatever. If you get that far."
But it is different! "Right. It's a good experience, too. I hope they stick with it after I graduate."
"That's right! She's due in just a couple of months now, so I want to do everything I can to make things better for her. I'll be going back to Iwatodai for the break, partly for that reason. She's healthy though! Everything's good. They won't tell me if I'm expecting a brother or a sister though," she sighs, but she isn't really upset about it.
"...Thanks," Ichika says after a moment. "Still, I appreciate it. And I'm going to keep doing my best. It's funny... Before, I just assumed I didn't need to go on to more school, but... Now I want to."

"Absolutely--on both counts," Jun agrees. He doesn't know if he'll get that close to Mitsuru--it seems likelier that they'll maintain a more professional relationship--but she's someone he'd like to make friends with.
"I hope that too," he adds. "It's important for people to have something to strive for if they want to make something of themselves, and that's something the newspaper club can be for people, just as it has for you. It would be a shame for it to fold after you graduate."
It's all good news in regards to Ichika's mother's pregnancy. "That's wonderful to hear," he says warmly. "I suppose you'll just have to pick out presents for your new siblings after they're born."
He wonders briefly what it would be like to be an older brother... He's not sure his parents will have another child, though. They all have an excellent relationship now, but when he was young, his mother and father fought all the time... Another child could disrupt the balance they've all created. ...Jun's not so selfless that he wouldn't resent that. He's a bit like his mother that way...
"There are many things we don't 'need,' but that we still desire," Jun points out. "Desire is the source of striving. You won't fight for something you don't want with all your heart--right?"

But something to strive for... "Yeah," Ichika answers. "It's like that. And I have a few people in mind who might be able to take over, from the work they're doing so far, anyway. If we can keep a real club alive for it... then I'll feel I accomplished something."
Ichika smiles back at Jun, warm. "I guess so! ...It's nice." She was worried it would just bring up old feelings... But it's different, somehow. Ichika is pensive a moment as she thinks of how she could express that.
So they're both thinking on it.
"Hmm. Yes," Ichika says, her language still vacillating between Tough Boss and the more polite girl she was originally raised to be, which happens sometimes in these situations--where it's not clear which one she has to be. "That's... true. And I do. Even if I still want to get married and everything... I want to see how far I can go, too."
"How about you? How are you feeling on exams? I know I think you've got them in the bag, but..."

Jun certainly isn't someone that Ichika needs to be a Tough Boss to, not unlike how he's not someone she needs to be a Sexy Girl to, either. That's the benefit of having a gay best friend! ...Not that they're best friends. They're not quite that close. Maybe one day.
It must be tough to be a woman, though, Jun reflects. Having to balance a family and one's own dreams and career... or, alternately, to give up the latter for the former. His smile fades as he follows this thought down its logical pathway with regards to his mother. That had definitely been a source of tension when he was young, looking back.
He shakes his head a bit. That's all in the past now. "I'm quite confident about finals. I'm a bit more nervous about college entrance exams," he admits. "I intend on applying to UTokyo, and their exams are legendarily tough, so wish me luck on that one. What about you?"
There is a slight commotion at another table. Yukari, one of the maid waitresses, is being mean to another customer, who appears to be loving it, to her seeming aggravation. "Poor Takeba-san," he murmurs sotto voce.

Ichika doesn't have to put on any particular performance for Jun; it's different from a lot of the people she knows. ...Not that she's two-faced or anything; it's normal to put on masks for the various situations in life...
Still, maybe one day they will be. Ichika is fmailiar with this exact struggle though, and when Jun's smile fades, Ichika tilts her head. "You OK?" she asks. "...Did I say something?"
But it is in the past. "Cool," Ichika answers. "Ah... yeah. UTokyo... I can't even imagine," she says, shaking her head. "Oh, I'm applying to a few--hedging my bets, I guess. But the one I'm looking at most is uhh, PIC? Pleione International College. I kinda like the idea of 'expanding my horizons', and it's still in Sumaru..."
Pause. Yukari. Ichika shakes her head. "If I thought she was half as into it as the customers, I'd say 'go for it'," Ichika sighs. "But no. She's too straightlaced for that. ...Sucks that she's stuck with it."
A pause. "I've... not had an easy time getting along with her though," Ichika admits. "It's not like I think anything bad of her these days, but... We're pretty different."

"Oh--I'm sorry, I'm fine. You are too," Jun reassures her. "An unpleasant thought just occurred to me... That's all. I'd rather not dwell on it."
It's not the reality in which they live, after all.
"Mmm, I'm considering that one as well if I don't get into UTokyo. I'd love to have more chances to practice my French and English, and learn other new languages," Jun muses. He smiles again. "And as you say, it's still in Sumaru."
Dorm living might be interesting, but he's not in a rush to move out of his room. He will if he has to--he must sooner or later--but that is a plus of PIC. ...Even if it does mean a commute.
He blinks, though, at Ichika's comment. "'Go for it'? What do you mean?" There's an obvious answer there, but does she really think he'd want that treatment too?
So she knows Yukari too... What a coincidence. "You are," he agrees. "Not that we're more than acquaintances, but I know her well enough to be able to agree there. And the ways in which you two are similar only make you likelier to butt heads." He smiles, his one visible eye sparkling. "The way you're both so strong-willed, for example."

"OK," Ichika answers. "Then we won't."
She moves it on from there, and then hears Jun out. French and English... "Maybe I could pick one up," Ichika says. "I'm not exactly a language expert, but anybody can learn if they have someone to talk to a lot, right?" She could make friends!
She isn't sure where she'll live yet; maybe she can get an apartment instead of living in a dorm. That'd be nice. Either way, it probably won't ahve bars on the windows like her current one...
"Oh, no, I mean--if I thought she were happy being mean to people and not squicked out, I'd tell her to enjoy it. If people are into that, whatever, right? ...But I don't think she likes it. I think it creeps her out that people do."
Sparkle! Ichika smiles despite herself at the assessment. "Heh. ...She is, that's true." She doesn't disagree about herself, either. Maybe that's progress? "I kind of... alienated her right off with a joke about--well, it's not important."
"Either way, hope she gets to leave soon. ...Our maid's been nice, though. I've never been quite sure how I feel about maid stuff."

"That's right--and I recommend it. Not only does it help you make more friends, it broadens your horizons in a lot of other important ways," Jun replies. "For example, it helps you think differently about how people communicate. One important lesson I've gleaned is how easy it is for nuance to be lost, either unintentionally or otherwise. It very much helps you develop your critical thinking skills--at least, in my experience."
Ichika explains her meaning, and that makes much more sense. Jun nods in understanding. "I get that sense too," he murmurs, glancing back at Yukari. "It's a shame. A cultural festival should be something for everyone to enjoy."
A joke... Jun can only guess it's off-color if Ichika doesn't want to repeat it. He won't press, only nods in understanding. He leans his chin on one hand, legs folding, as she brings up her feelings, or ambiguity thereof. "It is popular, but it isn't always respectful... I can see what you mean. I hope Takeba-san wasn't pressured into it. She might be strong-willed, but it's hard to maintain that when you feel like you'll disappoint so many people if you don't."
Speaking of maids, though: theirs returns with their orders! She sets them down in front of each of them and bows, then hurries on to another table. Jun takes a sip of his tea first--clearly made from a teabag, but hot and fresh--and then a bite of his fruits sando. The fruits are nice and fresh, and the sandwich is clearly just assembled. "It's quite good," he declares. "How's your hot chocolate, Ichika-san?"
(Her younger sister is Kawase-san, now. Maybe eventually she'll graduate to Ririka-san, but after all the tutoring Jun has given Ichika, she's gone to first-name basis first.)

"Yeah?" Ichika wonders. "I like thinking about how people communicate. And that's good for my work, too." Journalism. "...I guess I could stand to think critically about stuff, too."
But indeed, this is what she meant. "I agree," Ichika says. "Of course, a lot of times, somebody has to lose out for somebody else to win... But I prefer the kind of thing where that isn't true."
It was definitely off-color. "That's basically it," Ichika says. "It's sort of like, how much is it a sex thing for people? And how much is it just liking the cute clothes and stuff? Pretty dresses are nice. But some people get uncomfortable about it."
"Thank you," Ichika says to their maid intentionally and without making her linger. She nods back to the bow. And there, the hot choco! Ichika inhales the scent. "Mm..."
She sips. "Very good. Nice and creamy, too."
"This was a good idea, even if it was just to see my sister at first. I think I'm warming up on the maids."

"Everyone could," Jun says firmly. "Critical thinking is a necessary skill for leading a rich life--and for ethical reporters in particular, if you end up staying on that path."
Though there are circumstances where you have to not think about it. That's something Jun's living right now. He's not a big fan of the irony.
It is true that not everyone can come out equal in the race of life. As long as there are differences between people, there will be excuses to use those differences to divide them. Still, Ichika says it best: he prefers when that doesn't need to be true. Jun nods in agreement.
Some people do get uncomfortable about it. "Some closer to hand than others," he remarks, side-eyeing one of the creeps demanding Yukari's time now.
Fortunately, no one's actively harassing her as far as he can tell, so when the orders arrive, he and Ichika can enjoy them. "Ah, you're making me jealous," he laments when she renders judgement on the hot choco. Still, he smiles. "Yes, I'm glad we came out here. It's been a good way to relax and have fun before finals."
She's warming up on the maids, too. "Oh? Then all your sister's hard work has paid off," he teases.

"Yes," Ichika agrees. "It's important to me... being able to think out what the 'right' thing is. For myself."
Ichika has been there... but for different, very different reasons.
"...yes," she agrees on the ones closer to hand. "If it wouldn't cause a scene, I might see how they liked someone else being mean to them."
But it's fine. She can enjoy it, too, and laughs when he says he's jealous. "You should be! But I'm sure the tea's good, too." it has been good. But... there is one thing...
One thing other than her sister's hard work, which makes Ichika grin. "I guess so. But I'm not the one she most wants to impress, I think."
Then she pauses. "...Jun-san," she says. "...Do you think I'm still straight?" she wonders. "I've been thinking about it. I mean, my boyfriend, obviously. But my partner..."
"They're not a girl," she says. "And that's what I've been leaning on all this time. ...But... They're not actually a guy, either..."
"Am I being unkind, if I think of myself that way still...?"
She keeps her voice low; it's not a topic for the cafe as a whole.

"Certainly not," Jun agrees with wry humor. He glimpsed Ririka with her lady friend, and he knows what she's about--and knows Ichika knows it too.
So while he's startled by the topic change, he's not really surprised. He also knows about Tsubasa and Ichika's relationship, though he's never met their third--really knows little about him beyond that he's a boy. The important one here is Tsubasa, anyway.
Jun takes a long sip of his tea as he considers the question. When he sets it down, he murmurs, "I don't think it's unkind, necessarily. But this might be one of the things you need your horizons broadened on, too. If it doesn't bother Tsubasa-kun, I don't think you need to worry, but if it does... you might need to reconsider how attached you are to labels like 'straight' or 'gay.'"

It's not entirely 'light conversation', appropriate for light food... But it is something on her mind that she trusts Jun to give her good feedback on. Not just because he's gay himself, but because he's level-headed and thoughtful. ...Also the other part, though.
Ryuji's great, but requires Ichika to reckon with her identity less as a rule, though when she graduates and he doesn't... It might change.
But now...
"Yes," Ichika says. "I think I needed to hear it from someone else. ...My 'identity'... what it means to me, what I think of it... I'll have to figure that out for myself."
"And for them. I like when they act more like a guy--but I don't want them to feel like they can't act otherwise. I want them to be happy for who they are. And that's neither."
"So maybe I'm not."

Maybe not, no, but Jun doesn't mind--at least, if Ichika's okay with discussing this in public, he is too. If anything, the chatter around them will help keep them from being overheard, so as long as they keep their voices down, they ought to have more privacy, ironically enough.
He nods his agreement when Ichika speaks on her identity. "Maybe not," he agrees. "Sexuality is about what you find attractive, though. If you like Tsubasa-kun best when they're acting more like a guy, perhaps what you're attracted to is 'masculinity' rather than 'men.'
"At the same time, though, just because you don't want to stop them from presenting however they feel like, doesn't mean you're attracted to the other things they are. As long as you accept them for themself, and as long as it doesn't make Tsubasa-kun insecure or uncomfortable, I don't think there's anything wrong with that."
He offers an encouraging smile. "That, of course, is a conversation for you and them, but the two of you share so much trust. I wouldn't be afraid of having it if I were you."

Ichika is only barely thinking in lines that would need to be 'closeted' to begin with--and her relationship with Tsubasa is known to most of her peers. So... she's fine with relying on the noise to keep it quiet, instead of a more private location.
"Hmm. Yeah. And I definitely find 'masculinity' attractive. ...It might not be all I find attractive, I'm not sure yet, but it's definitely... like, the thing I'm most drawn to."
"But that's a good point, too. I don't have to be specifically drawn to everything..."
She nods. "Thanks," she says. "It is, but you've given me enough to go on that I feel... prepared to talk to them about it."
She sips her hot chocolate. Sando soon! "It's hard to be afraid when I'm talking with Tsubasa anyway."

"That's a start, then. The fact that you can divorce 'masculinity' from 'being male' will go a long way in helping you understand how you feel," Jun says encouragingly. "For my part, well..." Some rosiness rises in his cheeks. "...I admit, I prefer masculine men myself. There's something... reassuring about them, don't you think?"
Of course, he's thinking of a specific masculine man when he says that, but there's no need to get into that. It's not like he can be with Tatsuya, anyway...
Still, if Ichika's feeling more assured, that helps reassure him too. "I'm glad to hear it," he says. "As the saying goes, that's what friends are for." He chuckles as he raises his tea. "Yes. They're good at letting you know exactly where you stand." Sssip. "It's sad to say, but too many students at Kasugayama--even before we merged with Akiyama's student body--play games..."
He rolls his eyes. "Performative masculinity. That's something I don't find attractive, thank you very much."

"Huh. I guess I can do that," Ichika reflects. And then she grins at that rosy answer. "Definitely," she agrees. "And for me at least... defining him and me differently like that, it's... I don't know how to explain it. But part of what I like is that I'm not like that."
Despite being a Boss, Ichika's never been particularly masculine in her presentation except insofar as punching is inherently a little masc in their culture. Or a lot.
Ichika's not gonna push on Tatsuya, either.
"So they are. If I can ever do the same for you..." She wants to. But she grins back. "Yeah, they're good at that." Sando time. But after her bite, she rolls her eyes. "Seriously," Ichika agrees. "A guy who has to prove it all the time... That doesn't make me feel safe or assured or even attracted at all."
"...Which isn't to say I mind if a guy needs a little building-up, either. But you get the difference, right?"

Jun reflects on this. Part of being attracted to someone masculine is not being like that yourself... "Anima and animus," he muses. "Maybe the same is true for me, too."
Though he's not trying to present femininely, he knows himself well enough to be able to say he's not an especially masculine man, either.
"I'll be sure to let you know, of course," Jun replies. Ichika's got a good head on her shoulders, and while he might not be able to go to her about matters that touch a little too close to the supernatural, it's nice to have a girl friend that he can talk about boys with. He hasn't really... had that, before--maybe discounting Lisa, but considering she's also got feelings for Tatsuya... it's a little awkward.
"Oh, yes. It's only right to support your man when he needs it, just as he ought to support you when you need it--but he needs to have his own self-confidence too. Otherwise, that kind of behavior..." He shakes his head. "It's the difference between laying down the law when you need to, and barking because you're insecure."
He tastes another bite of his fruits sando. It's light and fluffy--quite tasty.

"Ani-...me?" Ichika doesn't quite get it. "Is that something that means opposites?" Well, maybe she gets it.
Ichika certainly puts a lot of work into her feminine presentation.
"Cool," Ichika says. It's nice to be able to talk about it, too; Ichika finds these matters close to her heart as a rule, and is glad to be able to provide it. But Jun can be that for her about matters that aren't 'what's expected of her', too--parts that are increasingly important in her life.
"Right!" Ichika answers, gesturing with her free hand. "And nobody likes insecure barking."
Ichika gets a little closer to finishing hers, too. It really does go nicely...

"Ah--sort of," Jun replies. "It's a concept from Jungian psychology. Put simply, anima represents the unconscious feminine side within a man's psyche, and animus represents the unconscious masculine side within a woman's psyche. Of course, there are those who are neither, like Tsubasa-kun, so it's not universally applicable."
"And yet, so many do it," Jun says dryly. He won't say it's something only men do, but it is definitely an unpleasant aspect of masculinity.
Still, it's been an enjoyable outing. He's noticed too that the waitress keeps glancing their way, and the other tables are all filled, so maybe it's time to focus on eating. There's plenty of time to chat more afterwards.

"Well, yeah, that's true. Tsubasa's neither. And it sounds like it doesn't match up with the kind of girl who's into girls," or men who are into men, "But still... In my case at least it's kind of interesting to think of my own 'masculine' side."
