  • Summary: Kanae and Touma break up over Shinichi Nagisa--or rather, his Homunculus. Kanae can't share the truth, and Touma says something he will later regret. It becomes too late for both of them to take either back.

"But you said you were scared of him!" Touma's anger and hurt are plain; the black-haired young man is mad enough that he has to remove his glasses a moment, cleaning them in anger as a way to compose himself. "You said you were scared," Touma repeats. "But now you're going out with him? That's a lot more than 'I can't say no', Kanae!"

"I know!" Kanae answers. Her dark eyes are reddened. "But I--I still--"

"Right, you still don't want me to confront him. I'm starting to think that's not about wanting to avoid a fight around finals. Do you have any idea how it makes me feel, to sit here and watch you go with him and tell me I shouldn't do anything about it?"

"Yes," Kanae answers, but doesn't get much more in before Touma continues.

"I know. You think I'm can't take him. You think because i'm an intellectual I can't handle what an athlete would do. You look down on me for that. I was able to look past it before, but you think a guy's supposed to be physically strong, too."

"That's not it!" Kanae's voice half has a pleading tone--but she knows. ...She can't tell the truth, here.

"Well, it looks like it. It makes me look bad, you know? Some guy steals my girl, and she doesn't even want me to fight for her. It makes me feel bad! Like you don't even think I'm a man!"

"I do, though! I--"

"Forget it," Touma answers, shaking his head. Irritatedly he puts back on his glasses and glares at Kanae through them. "I thought you were special. I thought we were special. But it's just an excuse, isn't it? It's just because you don't think I'm enough."

"Touma-kun..." Kanae feels the words stick in like a knife for her--but she hears a truth in them, too. He can't handle things like this, after all. But still... "I'm sorry," she says. "I meant what I said. He does scare me. But that's why--I don't want you to get hurt. It'll all blow over soon, and we can go back to--"

"They're right. What they say about you. You really are just that wild kind of girl. ...I just didn't want to see it." Touma's shoulders sink, but his expression tightens further. "That 'half' ruins everything about you."

"Touma!" Kanae recoils as if struck--and her eyes sting with tears she can't bring herself to shed. "...That's how you think of it, huh?" she asks.

"Then fine," Kanae continues. "Yeah, that's it. I want a real man. One who doesn't think me being /half/ is too much for him!"

Touma's expression twists and he balls up his hand into a fist--but he doesn't strike her. He just seems to think about it. Kanae flinches anyway, looking at his hand and stepping back immediately. "Look," Touma says, "I didn't--I mean, you can't just--"

"Forget it," Kanae says. She can tell he seems to regret her reaction--but it's too late for them now anyway. "I won't bug you being 'wild' anymore," she says.

"Don't talk down to me!" Touma insists. "I'm not like that!"

"You weren't like that," Kanae corrects, and it's supposed to be cold but she can only manage 'hurt'. "...You should go."

They're at her apartment, after all. So he frowns, but... "You're telling me to leave?" he confirms.

"...Yes," Kanae says. "I am. I'd rather not do this during finals, but... it's the limit of what I can take."

"Fine," he says, and then stiffens--and storms out.

The door slams behind him. Kanae flinches again, like she was the doorframe in the first place.
