Kanae Fuyuki is on the right side of Shujin's social fabric--but she knows it could easily be otherwise. A standout girl, she'd like to say it's because of her good grades and efforts in the Tennis Club, but she knows that being half-Japanese and dark-skinned is as much the reason as anything else. She is very knowledgeable about cinema and photography, and is thought of as reliable and solid--though a little 'quiet' at times. Her boyfriend Touma Okazaki is quick to quash any more negative rumors about her, but she's still considered a little of a pushover after forgiving her friend Himeki for starting a whisper campaign behind her back. In reality, that whisper campaign was part of the madness of Himeki's Foraine, and Kanae is a Persona-user trying to forge her own path in the face of the Wild Hunt's orthodoxy. She has strange dreams of the end of the world, and a close relationsship with the Velvet Room. ...Of course, she has a stubborn side after all; her rival Isabeau Fontaine never does seem to quite get her down for good.

Background

Kanae was born in Japan, contrary to what some of the rumors suggest about her heritage. But she grew up in a small town called Inaba, largely isolated from most of the other kids due to her differences. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, who ran a carpentry business, with a pair of cousins. But Inaba wouldn't be her destination; for high school, she applied to take the entrance exams for Shujin Academy in Tokyo, and succeeded. She moved to Tokyo for her first year of high school, living in Kagurazaka where she'd been born. At first, she had difficulty fitting in, but with her friend Himeki supporting her and her soon-boyfriend Touma, she opened up into the social world of Shujin, particularly with her efforts in Tennis. Naturally, Volleyball overshadowed the Tennis Club, but she did fairly well within that constraint.

Near the end of her first year, her friend Himeki began acting very strangely, bragging about how helpful she was and how Kanae would never have come so far without her. Her mania lasted about a week... after which time Kanae and Himeki reconciled despite some very difficult things having been said, and Kanae suddenly seemed a little more distant from some of her peers. Nevertheless, she didn't neglect her friends, so even if some people think she's gotten a little weirder, she's still part of the social fabric.

Nevermind the weird dreams she's had since then, or her habits of staying out late sometimes...

Kanae has been pursuing her own interests and battles as the Episode has progressed thus far, only intersecting with the wider grid much at the start of August 2012.

Leshy is a shapeshifting spirit of the forest, a giant of otherworldly nature who walks invisible paths through the wood. A protector, Leshy is also noted for stealing away children who have been mistreated by their kin, and to punish misdeeds towards the forest. Eerily tall and lanky, Kanae's Leshy appears as a humanoid woman with long and tangled green hair, a face shrouded in shadow, and clothes made of tree bark and animal pelts.

Ren Amamiya Amamiya-san 0. The Fool Former Friend Kanae was at least sort of friends with Ren in Inaba, but when Ren was introduced to Shujin, she was shy of renewing that acquaintance because of all the rumors. Now it's probably too late, but she does regret it.

Yua Ijuuin Ijuuin-sensei III. The Empress Teacher Kanae finds that Yua is one of the few to encourage her to find pride in her heritage, instead of downplaying it. She's not sure how she feels, but she thinks she appreciates it.
Isabeau Fontaine Isabeau-san VI. The Lovers Former Friend Isabeau drives Kanae crazy. They were once close friends in Inaba, but now Isabeau won't hear any of that. She's managed to get Isabeau into the Tennis Club, but the way they fight sometimes gets them both kicked out of practice. Lately, though, Isabeau is helping her with Shinichi's Homunculus... so maybe some things run deeper than rivalry.

Katsuko Yoshinaga Yoshinaga-san IV. The Emperor Acquaintance While Kanae has no strong opinions on Katsuko herself, she hates Katsuko's unknown alter-ego.

J. Itsuki Hayashi Hayashi-kun XIX. The Sun Clubmate Kanae likes Itsuki; he's a junior in the Tennis Club who can relate to her hafu problems. She's trying to look out for him some... but wishes he'd talk less about spiders.
Yanagi Nagisa Nagisa-san XX. Judgement ??? Kanae admires her directness, even if she finds it difficult to think about what she's been through. She hopes maybe she can learn from her about more than just the Homunculus.

Himeki Itabashi 'Me-chan' XV. The Devil Friend Himeki and Kanae have been friends since the first day of their first year in high school. There was a difficulty near March, though--Himeki said a lot of things she'd later regret. But Kanae forgave the way she'd been talking behind their back, after learning more about her in the Foraine de l'Étape, a supernatural space and affliction from which Kanae managed to rescue her. Himeki's recently reassured Kanae that she has her back no matter what. Even with recent events, Himeki still supports Kanae.
Touma Okazaki 'Okazaki-san' XVIII. The Moon Ex-Boyfriend Touma and Kanae went out for over a year and a half, and she owed a lot of her social success to him. He's a chess player from a good family, and very inquisitive--but also very concerned with appearances. He couldn't tolerate Kanae's apparent relationship with 'Shinichi', and they broke up in an argument about how she didn't want Touma to confront him.
