"Let's think positive!"

Pursuing her dreams of becoming a reporter, Maya Amano is a beautiful editor for Kismet Publishing's teen magazine, Coolest, and so always interested in the youth's perspective. The editor-in-chief hates her, though, so she's been assigned to get the scoop on the recent Joker Killer murders. Maya doesn't let this or anything get this down, though; she's an aggressively   positive person who actively chooses to look on the bright side. Her messiness and mischief drive her roommate Ulala Serizawa crazy, but Maya's too busy getting things done to sweat the small stuff. Recently, she's developed a mysterious, aching bruise on her chest that just won't go away.

Background

Much of Maya Amano’s history hasn’t changed from the previous timeline. She grew up with her mother and father in Sumaru City. Her father still worked as a war reporter. She still went to the Alaya Shrine with her father and begged him not to go. He still refused her gift of Mr. Bun Bun. He still died.

But most notably, Maya never encountered the Masked Circle. The joyful summer she once spent with Eikichi, Jun, Tatsuya, and Lisa is lost to her, forgotten – a sacrifice made in exchange for the timeline they all now live in.

Maya was forced to handle the grief and loss of her father alone, without their support. Much of that grief curdled into bitterness and resentment towards him for choosing his work over his family. It was challenging for the young Maya; in the previous timeline, her friends had helped her through this challenging time, even if they were unaware of it. But because she never met the Masked Circle, she was never locked in the shrine, never badly burned and scarred, and never developed a phobia of fire. She also never quite got over her feelings of bitterness towards her father.

For a while, Maya had a lonely childhood. With no Masked Circle to keep her company, the summer was a lonely one. When she was uprooted with the move at the end of the summer, she had to make a new set of friends midway through the school year. While that would’ve been difficult for most children, Maya’s friendly, open-hearted personality made it easier. Maya was a social butterfly by nature and she adjusted quickly.

As an adult, Maya returned to Sumaru and began working as a reporter at Kismet Publishing’s teen magazine, Coolest. She was originally paired with photographer Yukino Mayuzumi for assignments, but the pair were split up when Maya’s article on student dreams (pretty typical fare for a teen magazine) displeased Chief Mizuno.

Chief Mizuno instead assigned her to write a far more dangerous story on the Joker Phenomenon. Rumor said that if you call your own phone number and speak a name into the receiver, Joker will kill that person for you. One thing led to another and Maya’s roommate, Ulala Serizawa, was pulled into the investigation at the Seven Sisters School. There, they encountered high school dropout Anna Yoshizaka, who some believed may have been responsible for the murder of the high school principal, and another student, Noriko Katayama, who was determined to clear Anna’s name.

While at the Seven Sisters School, they encountered the police sergeant Katsuya Suou, who joined Maya and Ulala in their search for the truth. There, they were put face-to-face with the Joker himself. Not only did Joker appear to know Maya, but he also gifted her with a strangely familiar set of twin pistols – an unusual gift given that he attacked them only moments later, awakening their Personas in the process.

That wasn't the only case of déjà vu that Maya experienced, though. Some time before, Maya literally ran into a familiar figure at the train station. She would later coin this boy, Tatsuya Suou, Déjà Vu Boy -- because she got the feeling that she knew him from somewhere, but she didn’t quite know where. Soon afterwards, a bruise appeared on Maya's chest that wouldn't fade. The bruise wasn’t the only thing that surfaced after that encounter; shortly after that, Maya received a chilling calling card from the Joker Killer: YOU’RE NEXT.

It was perhaps that personal connection that was responsible for Maya taking on such a seemingly dangerous story – and sticking to it, even after they were defeated by the Joker once before. After tracking Joker to the clock tower where he was in the process of abducting Anna, the group was soundly defeated again by the masked serial killer. The trio were mercifully rescued by Maya's Déjà Vu Boy, who gave her the Seven Sisters emblem. He told her to go to the Kuzunoha Detective Agency and spread a rumor that the emblem would protect whoever held it from the Joker Killer. He warned her not to involve herself and to forget everything.

Maya was a meddler, though; she and the others looked into rumors about the Dark Side of Sumaru and in the process made contact with Baofu. Curious to see if false rumors could really become true, he spread a rumor that the bartender at Parabellum sold weapons. Sure enough, the rumor spread and the bartender became a weapons dealer.

They knew then that the emblem would truly protect whoever held it. Determined to uncover the truth no matter what, Maya burned the emblem of Seven Sisters High School. At the start of VRM, Maya is waist-deep in that investigation, now working alongside Katsuya Suou, Baofu, and her roommate, Ulala Serizawa, to discover the truth behind the Joker Phenomenon.
