The daughter of a painter, art has always been in Shizuka's blood. Her aptitude at drawing has won her several student art competitions across Japan, and she's said to have her pick of the most prestigious art schools in the country waiting for her after graduation. Her true artistic passion, however, is in creating manga, writing under the pseudonym Lucky Flash, and would rather pursue a career as a mangaka rather than go to art school, but is worried about how her father would react to her pursuing a "lower art form." Around Gekkoukanl, her chipper attitude always manages to bring warmth to her peers, even if she is often mistaken for a first year due to her height.

Background

Shizuka spent most of her childhood in Tokyo, in a house that doubled as her father's studio. Masaharu Kuroki is known for his abstract works, often incorporating mixed media aspects into his paintings, particularly using representations and symbols of popular culture, such as magazines and movie posters, in order to satirize the modern age. This even got him in some legal hot water with a record label over a perceived "unauthorized and libelous use" of a popular idol's photographs. As Masaharu would often travel across the country for exhibitions, Shizuka ended up spending a lot of time with her mother, Akane.

Akane was a magazine editor who had first met Masaharu while putting together a feature on him, with the two very quickly hitting it off and forming a relationship afterwards. After being nearly forced from her position once their relationship came out, she found a new job helping to run Magic Monday, a manga anthology magazine where Akane found herself truly happy.

As Masaharu passed down an appreciation for the fine arts, Akane passed down an appreciation for the comic arts, sharing a collection of manga to her husband's disdain. As Shizuka entered secondary school, her skills became fully realized, and her works started to be featured in student exhibitions across Tokyo. She was noted as being adept at multiple disciplines, moving between painting, collage, landscapes, and pencil drawings. At this time, she also started drawing manga as a hobby, adopting the pseudonym of "Lucky Flash" for these works as she published her strips anonymously on the internet.

In Shizuka's last year of secondary, tragedy struck the Kuroki family as Akane was struck by an out of control car and killed, leaving Masaharu and Shizuka alone. The sudden and seemingly meaningless nature of her mother's death left Shizuka in a state of shock, unable to focus on her art for her last semester of middle school. Sensing that a change of scenery, especially away from the busy, dangerous streets of Tokyo, would do Shizuka some good, Masaharu established a new studio in Iwatodai, with Shizuka transferring over to Gekkoukan for her first year of high school. Knowing how much her happiness meant to her father, Shizuka tried her best to push down her despair and put on a smile. Initially a bit withdrawn, as her art started getting attention, she began to open up more, and the smile she forced became real.

During her second year at Gekkoukan, on the anniversary of her mother's passing, Shizuka was pulling a late studio night to distract herself and lost track of time, realizing that it was already midnight. While running home, she noticed that the world outside the studio had changed, with the moonlight a sickly green and the streets populated with coffins. She pulled out her sketchpad to do some studies, momentarily forgetting herself, and found herself pursued by a Shadow. Backed into a corner, her desperation sprang forth as her Persona Galatea to protect her. After collapsing, she was picked up by SEES and approached with an offer to join. Sensing a good story in the whole thing, she accepted and moved into the Iwatodai Dormitory.

Persona

Galatea is a name given post-antiquity given to a statue carved in ivory by the mythical Greek sculptor Pygmalion of Cyprus. Having fallen in love with the statue, Pygmalion gives an offering to Aphrodite, who granted the statue life.

As Shizuka's Persona, Galatea takes the form of a statue half-formed, the shape of a woman in armor roughly carved into a slab of stone. Galatea allows Shizuka to support and heal her allies, and attacks with earth and stone.
