"Don't waste your breath."
Shinjiro Aragaki is running from his problems. A towering third-year student at Gekkoukan High School with a brusque attitude who stopped attending school and instead usually hangs around in dark alleyways late at night, he is a founding member of SEES and a close childhood friend of school boxing star and fellow orphan Akihiko Sanada. After a horrific accident two years ago, Shinjiro left SEES and began a reliance on Persona suppressants which are slowly killing him. Having returned to active duty after making new friends in Sumaru and being forced to reckon with the consequences of his past deeds, Shinjiro's armored, thorny exterior hides a kind and gentle young man who puts others before himself. He has a true passion for cooking, loves animals, and tries to pass on his learned wisdom to the younger SEES members wherever possible.
Background
As early as he can remember, Shinjiro Aragaki was an orphan. Raised at an orphanage, he met Akihiko and Miki Sanada at the age of four, and became inseparable, especially with Akihiko. However, when he and Akihiko were eight, the orphanage was burnt down by an arsonist, killing Miki. This was traumatic for Shinjiro, something that'd stick with him forever.
Shinjiro remained Akihiko's rock, following him to Gekkoukan and eventually meeting Mitsuru Kirijo in middle school. Mitsuru recruited Akihiko into SEES, and Shinjiro, refusing to abandon him, followed along, fighting Shadows during the Dark Hour. The three made a promise to graduate together, something Shinjiro appears to have forgotten.
Two years ago, a rookie Shinjro ended up losing control of his Persona. Castor destroyed the Amada household, killing a mother of a young child. Shinjiro abandoned SEES immediately, traumatized again by taking a life and leaving an orphan. He learned about Persona suppressant drugs eventually and began taking them, hoping to learn to control Castor - this worked, but had the side effect that Shinjiro, a natural Persona user, will lose worse control of his Persona if he stopped taking them. Additionally, the drugs did a constant number to Shinjiro's body, promising his death before graduation either way.
Shinjiro became homeless, isolating himself from the people he cared about. He couch-surfed with shady 'friends', got a part-time job at Hagakure Ramen, occasionally crashing in the back room, and generally just loitered in places that he probably shouldn't loiter. He still frequented the restaurant regularly even after quitting, and the owner often wants him to come back, having taught him how to cook.
SEES wants him back, but Shinjiro can't accept putting that burden back on them. His path is different now... but how long until he must answer the call?
Season 1, Episode 1
- STACKED DECK - PART 1: Shinjiro begins investigating Tatsuya Sudou, the Old Maid Killer who burned down his orphanage ten years ago. He is tipped off to the information by one Goro Akechi, his fellow orphan. He aligns with Myunghon Yeo in order to get more information and assistance. During an attack on Seven Sisters, Shinjiro comes face to face with the Joker Killer, losing control as he confronts him and nearly injuring others. During this event, he learns that Akechi is a Persona user.
- HAUNTED BY THE PAST - PART 1: Shinjiro befriends Umie Akabane, who assists him along with others in journeying to Tartarus to rescue a Gekkoukan student named Fuuka Yamagishi, having bought an Evoker from Strega to fight again, claiming it's a one-time thing. His former SEES comrades, Akihiko Sanada and Mitsuru Kirijo, see him fight for the first time in two years, as he battles with his Persona, Castor. Akihiko tries to convince Shinjiro to come back once more, the latter refusing. Mitsuru later does the same, insisting he return to school, but he still refuses.
- LIKE A DRAGON: Shinjiro is there when Junya Kaneshiro threatens Myunghon and the Cardboard Dragon. He almost gets himself hurt telling Kaneshiro to screw off, and decides to assist Myunghon in breaking into his supposed Palace. Myunghon gives Shinjiro a safehouse key, getting him off the streets more often, though he refuses to monopolize it, alternating days on and off the street. Shinjiro, Myunghon, and their allies later discover the route to Kaneshiro's Palace. During their excursion into the Palace, Shinjiro fights Niko Kirisaki with Akihiko and Yukari Takeba. Myunghon and Shinjiro later confide in each other their health issues and traumatic crimes, solidifying their bond. In the end, Kaneshiro is defeated, though a man with a black mask interrupts their victory, threatening Kaneshiro and the group of Persona users before disappearing as quickly as he came.
- HIRASAKA BLUES: Shinjiro continues to aid Myunghon and the Cardboard Dragon, becoming a solid member of their core group. However, while aiding Myunghon with love troubles, Shinjiro finds out that they've been harassed by a violent and bigoted cop. In surviving a dangerous Mementos run, he is forced to fight the same police officer who attacks Myunghon, getting himself arrested by the Sumaru PD after punching the cop in the face and staying behind to protect Tsubasa Seki. He suffers while in jail, the police having found his pills.
- HAUNTED BY THE PAST - PART 2: After the arrest, Mitsuru bails out Shinjiro, confronting him about his ties with Strega and his drug use. In the process, she learns the truth about what he's been hiding: that he's been taking suppressants. With Mitsuru insisting he come back to SEES, Shinjiro asks for one week to decide. After Ken Amada, the boy whose mother Shinjiro killed two years ago, prepares to move into the SEES dorms, Shinjiro decides he must come back to protect him and rejoins SEES.

Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight, I throw myself into
And out of the red
Out of her head, she sang
Come down and waste away with me
Down with me
Slow, how you wanted it to be
I'm over my head
Out of her head, she sang
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
Breathe out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head
Out of my head, I sang
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
I was right there
While you fought tooth and nail
Gasping in the gas mask thrashing till you disappeared
Say you're not scared, that you know it's cause I cared and
Say you know I love you, and that hope was just not there
And I know, I know that I'm wrong
That when you're gone you're gone
And I can't bring you home
But I want, I want to believe
That you'll remember me when you're just memory
Roots in the ground
Or uploaded to the cloud or
Warm inside our hearts or as electrons in our head nowhere now
Over the rainbow, can I stop by and say hello and
Sorry I would take it back if I could but I know
To love one from too far to call
Is not to love at all, to whom is it I talk?
But I want, I want to believe
That you can still hear me when you're just memory
Said "it's okay"
And "It'll all be over soon"
I'd never let a bad thing happen to you
Now goodnight I love you
And every, everybody dies
Fighting for their lives, just trying to survive
Well now I know, I know why we say
That there's a better place that waits beyond the grave, oh
And I know, I know it's not true
There's just no more you but as long as there's no proof
Then I choose, I choose to believe
That we'll meet in sweet dreams after you're put to sleep
Every day I'm just survivin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
Even when I feel like dyin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
Another night I'm barely holdin' on
One step away from being dead and gone
Am I alive to die another day?
Is this life that I've been livin'
All that's meant for me?
Every day I'm just survivin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
Even when I feel like dyin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
Every time I think I'm over it
I wake up in the bottom of it all again
I'm still survivin', keep climbin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
The higher I go, the harder I fall
So I don't look down, I don't look back at all
And when I wish it all would turn to black
I try to see the light and push the darkness back
Every day I'm just survivin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
Even when I feel like dyin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
Every time I think I'm over it
I wake up in the bottom of it all again
I'm still survivin', I keep climbin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
So If I'm numb, already too far gone
And If I feel a pulsin', I can carry on
When I'm lost and wanna fade away
I tell myself to live to die another day, yeah
Every day I'm just survivin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
Even when I feel like dyin'
Keep climbin' the mountain
Every time I think I'm over it
I wake up in the bottom of it all again
I'm still alive and keep climbin'
Keep climbin' the mountain, the mountain
Dedications
When all of your flaws and all of my flaws
Are laid out one by one
The wonderful part of the mess that we made
We pick ourselves undone
All of your flaws and all of my flaws
They lie there hand in hand
Ones we've inherited, ones that we learned
They pass from man to man
There's a hole in my soul
I can't fill it, I can't fill it
There's a hole in my soul
Can you fill it? Can you fill it?
You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve
And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground
Dig them up; let's finish what we've started
Dig them up, so nothing's left untouched
All of your flaws and all of my flaws,
When they have been exhumed
We'll see that we need them to be who we are
Without them we'd be doomed
There's a hole in my soul
I can't fill it, I can't fill it
There's a hole in my soul
Can you fill it? Can you fill it?
You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve
And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground
Dig them up; let's finish what we've started
Dig them up, so nothing's left untouched
Ooh
Ooh
When all of your flaws
And all of my flaws are counted
When all of your flaws
And all of my flaws are counted
You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve
And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground
Dig them up. Let's finish what we've started
Dig them up. So nothing's left untouched
Ooh
Ooh
All of your flaws and all of my flaws
Are laid out one by one
Look at the wonderful mess that we made
We pick ourselves undone
Blessed be the night we're breathin' in
Unforgettable and so benevolent
The closest that we'll get to Heaven-sent
For all us darling aliens
And we will never be this young again
So full of fire and rebellion
Now shoot the night just like it's medicine
And we all will be born again, again, again, again, again
This is everything you prayed for
(Pray for, pray for, pray for)
This is everything I need
Please, don't anybody pray for me
(My soul isn't yours to save anymore)
Life is crazy, baby, don't forget the seatbelt
Adjust the rearview, crack the windows, shut the goddamn doors
Our great unknown, the open road
Blessed be the sky we're soaring in
So few of us and millions of them
Daylight isn't far away, my friend
And we all will be born again, again, again, again, again
Life is crazy, baby, don't forget the seatbelt
Adjust the rearview, crack the windows, shut the goddamn doors
Our great unknown, the open road
So alive, we could die
As we drive all night in the afterlife
Through and through, by and by
Everything I love is right here tonight
Seven, Heaven, oh, it's clear
Heaven, we're already here
Let it live, let it die
No, we can't get off, here we are tonight
Through and through, by and by
As we drive all night in the afterlife
Seven, Heaven, oh, it's clear
Heaven, we're already here
What you livin', what you livin', what you livin' for?
What you livin', what you livin', what you livin' for?
What you livin', what you livin', what you livin' for?
Is what you're livin' for worth dyin', worth dyin' for?
And this is everything you prayed for
(Pray for, pray for, pray for)
This is everything I need
Please, don't anybody pray for me
(My soul isn't yours to save anymore)
Life is crazy, baby, baby
(Adjust the rearview, crack the windows, shut the goddamn doors
Our great unknown, the open road)
Adjust the rearview, crack the windows, shut the goddamn door
Our great unknown, the open road
So alive, we could die
As we drive all night in the afterlife
Through and through, by and by
Everything I love is right here tonight
Seven, Heaven, oh, it's clear
Heaven, we're already here
Let it live, let it die
