"Don't worry! Detective Shimizu is on the case to help you find your way to the right train!"
Reiko Shimizu is the youngest of three sisters. She is a twenty-three year-old police officer in Tokyo. She is friendly, cheerful, and helpful in the extreme. She is a junior detective, but can't quite shake her tendency to be a beat cop; she is just as likely to be giving directions in Shibuya and finding lost cats in Yongen-Jaya as she is to be on a case. This tendency to overwork is a source of consternation to her boss, Benkei Uchijima. Still, her cheerful nature and determined mindset make her popular on the force... if also their designated errand girl. Outside of work, she lives in a small apartment in Yongen-Jaya. She often goes to see her older sisters, Ayame and Shinobu, and sometimes can be found looking at bookstores throughout Tokyo.
Background
Reiko was born to Satsuki and Kenzou Shimizu on February 11, 1989. The youngest of three daughters, her early years were happy despite the strict upbringing of her parents. They proved emotionally distant even for a girl in elementary school, but she received a lot of attention from her older sisters. She found the love and support that always seemed lacking from her parents in Ayame and Shinobu. As she got older, though, her parents' demands on her life began to increase. School meant there was something for her to excel at, and so they began to pressure her to do well in it.
It was little things, at first. Her sisters, being older, got the brunt of her parents' attention. But even at a young age, Reiko felt the pressure from them. Her grades were good, but they could always be better. She was polite, but never quite polite enough. She might have a good idea, but it wasn't her place to speak up about it. She wasn't born a perfectionist, but she certainly learned to become one.
Her life changed significantly when her oldest sister Ayame got pregnant. Reiko, at age ten, was old enough to understand a little. She understood her parents' anger. She understood that Ayame disappointed them, and Reiko already knew that disappointing their parents was a bad thing to do. But she didn't understand what it meant when Ayame was no longer part of their family. She cried and pleaded with her parents, but then she was told that she also disappointed them. She kept her tears to Shinobu after that.
She learned a lesson, though: her parents would reject them if they weren't the people that they expected them to be.
Reiko found more pressure on her to succeed as she got older. They wanted her to fill in for Ayame, and that pressure only increased as Shinobu rebelled against them. Reiko both respected and envied her older sister. She could never bring herself to be disobedient -- never mind that no amount of obedience satisfied them -- and when Shinobu transferred high schools due to discipline issues, her parents made sure Reiko knew she was the last hope they had for a "good daughter." After that, she hid her tears from her sister too. She didn't want to make her feel guilty.
Reiko tried to live up to those impossible standards. She went to Shujin and was a hard worker. She became the student council president by her last year there. Her parents started plotting out how she would -- based on a few offhand remarks by Reiko -- become a police officer (and, one day, a commissioner!), sure to have the good job expected of her.
But with the increased independence she enjoyed in high school, she started rebelling in little ways. She started seeing her sisters outside of the home, visiting Shinobu and even Ayame after school. She got to meet her sister and her sister's family. She always felt close to Ayame, but she got to be close to her -- and it meant the world to her. But Reiko also feared that her mother and father would learn that she was visiting them. She feared being in trouble with them.
She came to realize her parents didn't know her. They didn't realize that she needed her sisters. She was forbidden from seeing Ayame. She was expected to be nothing more than a messenger for their disappointment to Shinobu. It never occurred to them that Reiko didn't see her sister as a disappointment. They warned her away from being rebellious like Shinobu or "distracted" by a boyfriend like Ayame -- and all the while, never realizing that Reiko didn't struggle with rebellion... and that she hadn't, until they admonished her for their idea, considered a boyfriend.
When she did consider it and realized that it wasn't a boyfriend that they should be worried about, Reiko grew despondent. After all, her parents had proven that they wouldn't accept their daughters for who they are. But, she never found the courage to tell Ayame or Shinobu either.
She also, secretly, joined the Science Fiction and Fantasy Club at Shujin. Her parents would never have approved, but Reiko found that she loved reading and writing science fiction and fantasy books. Her parents didn't let her buy such books -- they preferred she read popular and "intelligent" literary fiction -- but Ayame and Shinobu gifted her a tablet on her fifteenth birthday so she didn't have to hide an entire library. She also started writing, sharing short stories with her fellow club members, a few close friends, and her sisters.
Reiko graduated from high school and was accepted into Kyoto University's law enforcement program. In college, she had a little more time to work on her fiction -- never publishing anything, but she found writing groups. And in one of those, she met a girl -- or, at the time, the girl. She was also an avid fan of science fiction and fantasy, an aspiring writer, and a library major named Akemi Sonomura. They started dating and it was happy, for a while.
But problems crept up. Reiko wouldn't tell her family about Akemi -- including her sisters, even if she hoped they would understand. They broke up in her third year. Reiko was despondent, and alone with that feeling. She liked her studies, but she didn't love them. They felt incomplete for her: she wanted to help people, rather than have some high minded ideals about justice and how society should work. She finished college feeling incomplete, like she somehow didn't really connect with anyone. But, her grades were good and her parents were happy.
When she graduated, Reiko got a job with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Her parents were happy -- but reminded her to seek a promotion to detective as soon as possible. She worked hard that first year as a beat cop. She found the work fulfilling, but not thrilling. She helped people in Shinjuku, doing a lot of mundane traffic enforcement, taking reports on basic crimes, and the like.
One of the notable things she did was act as a parole officer for Tsubasa Seki. She met them and helped them, trying to steer them clear of trouble. They even lived with her briefly, after being kicked out of their house. And when she intervened on false charges of arson, showing that they couldn't have been at the scene of the crime. This got the attention of a senior detective, Benkei Uchijima. She impressed him and he worked to get her a promotion to detective.
She became a junior detective at the start of 2012. Under Benkei's mentorship, she has started working on cases and proven herself industrious... but has found little time to write. Benkei has been friendly and supportive -- and helped advance a career she feared might stall out. She lives near her sisters again, getting to visit them regularly.
And yet, there are things that don't quite sit right with her. She is the junior partner at her job -- the one tasked with the grunt work, making the coffee, and running errands. Her parents never seem satisfied. And Benkei is personable and supportive, but she sometimes wonders how he can afford such a nice house on a detective's salary. And, some nights, she looks at unfinished stories and asks herself: "Is this really what I want to do?"
She doesn't have an answer.

Special Skills
While Reiko has no supernatural powers to speak of -- and, indeed, isn't even aware of the existence of Personas, Shadows, and the like -- she is a police officer, with training in self-defense and firearms. When she encounters a difficult situation, she has three approaches:
1. Patient Demeanor (Understanding): Reiko is kind, considerate, and capable of keeping her cool. A life with demanding parents makes her prone to stop and listen, even with the most agitated person.
2. Top of Her Class (Academics): Reiko excelled academically in high school and college. She is smart, analytical, and knowledgeable on many subjects.
3. Cool Under Fire (Guts): Reiko has had police training and is good at keeping calm under pressure. Be it a difficult situation, a fist fight, or something else, Reiko doesn't often panic.
