"I'd much rather be a meddler than ignore those who could benefit from a little meddling."

Julian Marlowe is Kasugayama High's new English teacher and guidance counselor, a young man from Britain with the impeccable manners one would expect from a self-styled Gentleman. Yet below his calm, somewhat quirky exterior beats a passionate heart that genuinely wishes nothing but the very best for his students, and the will to bring it out of them through whatever means necessary. Seeking to bury a turbulent past that cost him everything, his new life in Japan also ended up including a different sort of adventure: answering the Will of Rebellion and taking on the alternate identity of Vesper, the jovial and over-eager Supernatural Investigator with a flair for the dramatic.

Background

Julian is a recent immigrant from London, arriving in Tokyo in early 2012. Though he may not quite know all the ins and outs of Japanese culture, his mastery over the Japanese language and knowledge of the local customs is striking - suggesting he didn't travel there on a whim. He lives alone in a very nice apartment in the Tomigaya district of Shibuya, which suggests he's been doing rather well for himself.

But at present, aside from the impressive credentials that effortlessly got him the position at Kasugayama High, no one really knows much of anything about what his life in his home country was like. Julian doesn't tend to talk much about himself in general, but where it comes to his past before 2012, he's been exceptionally tight-lipped.

Persona

Raffles: A humanoid-shaped figure wearing a fashionable dark trench coat over a white cricket jersey bearing the number 17 in red, carrying a diamond-tipped walking cane in the left hand and a cricket bat in the right. His right side limbs are notably inhuman, made up out of a mass of dark tendrils - wrapped around the bat, in the case of the right 'hand'. His face is covered by an iron face guard styled halfway between that of a cricket catcher and a Man In The Iron Mask-style prisoner's helmet, only leaving openings for the eyes and mouth, through which a bright yellow light shines.

Based on the character A.J. Raffles from the novels written by E.W. Hornung, this self-described 'Amateur Cracksman' mingled in high society as the very picture of a British gentleman, admired for his skill at cricket. By night, he would use his mastery of disguise and proficiency at constructing makeshift burglary tools to steal from those he considered undeserving of their riches.

Special Skills

Though he has his area of expertise in counseling, Julian has an uncommonly wide range of knowledge and experiences, and is very quick to adapt and improvise based on the circumstances. If there is a limit to his patience, or any way to provoke him into rudeness, it has yet to be discovered.

His Approaches are as follows:

  • Counsel - It's right there in the job description! Julian always has a well-meaning word of advice to give, employing his Understanding of people and situations to steer a situation towards a positive outcome.
  • Inspire - Though perfectly aware of his natural Charm and how that could be used as an asset, generally speaking, there's nothing disingenuous about Julian's words of flattery and encouragement. He's simply helping to boost confidence and bring out the best in others.
  • Swagger - When all else fails, and you have no idea what you should be doing, fake it 'til you make it. Julian is Gutsy enough to try and bluff his way through situations with nothing but false bravado.

Relationships

(I'm historically very bad at keeping up with these, we'll see if I manage!)

Notable NPCs

  • Tomoyo Harayama (XVII. The Star) - A second year at Kasugayama High school. Julian's staunchest supporter, putting up with any and all teacher's pet allegations to defend him as a well-meaning individual who really cares about his students. Quiet and withdrawn until a few weeks after Julian arrived, now unafraid to freely speak her mind and stand up for herself. Is this the power of counseling...?
  • Kotoha Shiranui (VIII. Justice) - A third year at Kasugayama High school. Having never allied herself with a Boss, she was known to be a lone wolf with a vicious temper and the muscle to back it up. Yet when returning to school after summer vacation in 2012, she started to effectively act as self-appointed Hall Monitor from Hell, while referring to Julian as 'Boss'. Just what is Julian doing to the students...?
