"Pressure can create diamonds, sure, but it can also just create rubble."

Tamaki Uchida is a friendly and vivacious college student working part-time as a detective under Chief Todoroki at Kuzunoha Detective Agency. A veteran Persona User, she had an adventure of her own in her high school days that caused her school to get shifted to another dimension until she fixed it. She later transferred to St. Hermelin High and got caught up in the SEBEC Scandal, though she remained in the school to help protect the students there. Now she's gotten caught up in yet another supernatural disaster, but she's not bothered. She's confident in herself and her skills. At the same time, though, she knows perfectly well this isn't her story, and the help she offers is only to support the true leads.

Background

Fall, 2007: 1st-year student and member of her school's fencing club, Tamaki Uchida Awakens to her Persona during the Karukozaka High incident, located somewhere in the east part of Shinjuku Ward where it borders Chiyoda Ward. Tamaki now understands this to have been an event caused by the manifestation of some kind of cognitive space. The incident remains largely forgotten in the public consciousness as a gas leak which caused hysteria amongst the faculty and student populace, but with no lasting ramifications on the same scale as, for example, the later Mikage-cho incident. While she is not entirely certain, Tamaki's current opinion today is that this was an isolated incident, historically unconnected to more recent and current phenomena such as the Mikage-cho incident, the rumors in Sumaru City, the Joker Killer, etc.

Tamaki is hesitant to speak openly about the Karukozaka High incident, largely out of respect to her classmates which were key to the incident. On a lesser note, Tamaki also fears the possibility that someone with institutional power and a greater capacity for nefarious plans would misuse any knowledge gleaned from the incident's full details. In the current day, in the wake of things like the Mikage-cho incident, the nature of Sumaru City's rumors, and Artificial Persona-users, Tamaki feels that she was correct about the latter of her concerns, and this has only further reaffirmed her decision to withhold what she knows of the Karukozaka High incident.

Alongside her activities in the fencing club and her current side interests in chess and puzzles, Tamaki forms new interests in matters of the occult as well as classic Japanese literature and works of the Edo- and Meiji-era periods, initially favoring meditations on death such as Yamamoto's Hagakure, Natsume Soseki's I Am a Cat, and gesaku works satirizing the higher echelons of Japanese society in those times. As an Awakened Persona-user, she begins to experience the Dark Hour from this point on, too. This initially causes her some amount of distress. In seeking comfort that what she experienced at Karukozaka High and continues to experience in the Dark Hour aren't incidents isolated solely to her, she registers for an account on the Dark Side of Sumaru message boards, but refrains from posting. She finds nothing that lines up with the Karukozaka High incident itself, but discussion about the Dark Hour eases her fears and confirms that she is at least not alone in that.

At least two missing person cases related to the Karukozaka High incident remain unsolved to this day, but most people local to the area do not consider this much of a disturbance to the local order and view their absence as an overall improvement for the good of society. Tamaki, on the other hand, disagrees with her peers. She grows more distant from her classmates at Karukozaka High for the remainder of her time there and remembers these days as tinged with bitterness and pessimism.

The exact nature of her Awakening during the Karukozaka High incident eludes precise definition, at least in keeping with other methods well-known amongst Persona-users. She did not participate in the Persona game, but instead underwent a mixture of processes during a near-death experience, something halfway between Guide-driven and Potential-driven. That is the most she is willing to openly disclose with fellow trusted Persona-users. In Tamaki's own privately-held estimation, she had a Guide but cannot identify them, and the closest match to her Potential is the variety found in those on Tatsumi Port Island and the Dark Hour, though her experience involved the real version of that which Evokers merely simulate. The rokumonsen choker she wears, the six-coined necklace, serves as her focus.

Late Winter through Early Spring, 2008: Tamaki's family moves from Shinjuku Ward in Tokyo to (wherever St. Hermelin High School is) after her father obtains a new job at a different advertising agency. Tamaki begins attending St. Hermelin High School as a 2nd-year in the following Spring term. This renews her spirits, and she is far more egregarious and personable at her new school than she was at Karukozaka. Her father's ad agency strikes a major deal with a pharmaceutical store chain, which keeps them afloat during the recession soon to follow. One of her classmates is in the same family that runs the store chain, and they begin to see each other more often outside of school. The children's personalities clash and they often bicker, despite the encouragement of their families to get along. While they do not place much pressure on them to court each other, they have some hope their children will marry in the future. If they do exert any pressure of the sort, it is very quiet and understated.

January, 2009: The Mikage-cho incident occurs. Tamaki Uchida is also present for this. Before Tamaki determines whether or not she will yet again play a major part in resolving events, she witnesses Naoya's group actively making strides and moving forward. After seeing this, she instead feels compelled to remain behind and protect her other non-Awakened classmates, particularly the aforementioned pharmacy chain's heir. She does not verbally make her status as a Persona-user known and acts as she's oblivious to what's really going on, though Naoya's group may have perceived her Resonance. She has two more reasons for doing so: she does not want to raise suspicions about herself and any knowledge she may have of the Karukozaka High incident, and she was playing along with Naoya's group, who she witnessed also acting oblivious in front of non-Awakened students. Both parties were silently on the same wavelength and preferred to minimize the amount of people who become embroiled in these supernatural matters.

Tamaki falls asleep as one of the victims of the Snow Queen's Hypnos Tower. Once Naoya's group rescues her and the other students, Tamaki allows them to borrow the practice sabre she had used during the Karukozaka High incident, feeling they could make better use of it. Tamaki is not further involved in resolving the matter and still does not know the deeper truth about the events which occurred. She is, however, aware of its nature as a cognitive-space event, having recognized the sensation of Resonance and the many Demons present. While she disagrees with the public version of events, she likely only became aware that SEBEC was involved after the dust had cleared.

Tamaki and her pharmacy chain heir classmate begin dating, which is met with celebration by their families. Her practice sabre is returned to her.

Spring, 2010: Tamaki graduates high school and pursues a degree in criminology at a local university in Aoba Ward. Her intent is to work as a private detective rather than work in law enforcement proper. She does not openly speak on the specifics of it to people she does not trust, but her rationale is that after she had witnessed the events at Karukozaka High, she feels more compelled to work in the interests of innocent people who may be unfairly maligned by the rigidity of the social order. She doesn't view collectivism as inherently a bad thing and she generally is in favor of it, but she believes that it needs a little bit more in the way of checks and balances. She has seen the worst excesses of it during her time at Karukozaka, which led to the tragic events there. To that end, she wishes to work in the private sector, taking on cases that the police may be too overburdened to pursue or otherwise dismiss as absurd. She initially had no intent of investigating paranormal matters, but it seems things have gone that way regardless.

April, 2011: Tamaki interviews with Chief Todoroki of the Kuzunoha Detective Agency. The Chief senses or otherwise gleans something of Tamaki that impresses him, though the jury's out on exactly what that is. It could be that he detected her nature as a Persona-user, it could be that her motivations had impressed him, it could simply be her diligence as a student, it could be any number of things. She begins as an apprentice detective subcontracted out to Todoroki, a necessary requirement before one can obtain their own full private detective license in Japan.

Around this time, Tamaki also forms a pact with a Nekomata, who now resides hidden within the Kuzunoha Detective Agency and requests donations through the lucky cat statue situated at the front of the Agency. While this provides her with an unconventional means of obtaining information, her secondary intent is to use the statue to serve as a rudimentary personality test. Borrowing inspiration from Natsume Soseki's seminal work, she intends to get a first impression of someone by how they treat a lowly cat statue, let alone how they would treat an actual cat. Tamaki is far more interested in a visitor's attitude and treatment of an ostensibly inanimate object, not whether they actually pay up or not.

August, 2011: The pharmacy chain heir proposes marriage to Tamaki. At this time, she accepts.

February, 2012: Tamaki and her fiancé amicably break up. It has become clear to Tamaki that her life will keep her in Sumaru City for longer, while her ex-fiancé has some incredibly complicated family and business matters to attend to elsewhere in the world. Unable to maintain a long-distance relationship under such conditions, they end their engagement and wish each other well. The reason given by Tamaki, her ex-fiancé, and their families is that assassins were after his life. If pressed further, they only warmly insist "it can't be helped, don't worry about it." Still on friendly terms with his family today, Tamaki retains the use of a family discount at the pharmacy store chain and often makes use of it to purchase magazines.

May, 2012: Tatsuya Suou stops by the agency and inquires if the Joker Killer rumor had spread here yet, much to the confusion of Tamaki (and possibly Todoroki) at the time. His meaning is made much more clear soon after: the Joker Killer takes the life of his first high-profile victim, if not his first one outright: Principal Hanya of Seven Sisters High School. Maya Amano later visits the agency and requests that they spread the rumor that the Seven Sisters High School emblem will protect them from the Joker Killer. In order to further verify this phenomenon, Tamaki points Maya Amano in the direction of Baofu, webmaster of Dark Side of Sumaru. As a result, Maya and Baofu request the Agency to spread the rumor that Parabellum sells weapons. From then on, the Kuzunoha Detective Agency is in the business of spreading rumors to make them a reality in Sumaru City, for a price. Beyond that, they're also in pursuit of the truth behind the Joker Killer and aim to prevent further killings.

June, 2012 through current-day: Tamaki informs Ulala Serizawa and Tatsuya Suou of the Joker Killer's next target, Eikichi Mishima. Tamaki took advantage of her pact with Nekomata to gain this information, albeit at the cost of several paycheck advances used to pay the Demon cat. Over the next month, she burdens herself with extra cases to make up for this blow to her personal finances, most of which are mundane in nature.

July, 2012: At the request of Myunghon Yeo of the Cardboard Dragon, Tamaki also begins deeper investigation into the Kirijo Group and Tartarus. She renews her long-dormant suspicions about potential connections to SEBEC and the Nanjo Group, given their shared origins.

Season 1, Episode 1

For the first couple of months after the Joker Killer had showed up, Tamaki was initially hesitant to get involved in direct conflicts in the supernatural world -- she has plenty of mundane cases to worry about, too! At least she's been able to support other Persona-users by gathering and providing information. If someone wants to know a rumor, the lucky cat might know something for particularly generous donors. If someone wants a rumor spread, on the other hand, then she's more than happy to forward the request to Todoroki.

But the danger's getting more and more difficult to ignore. Here's what's on her plate:

Persona

Arianrhod: The silver wheel, Arianrhod, is a goddess associated with death, rebirth, fertility, and the moon. She originates from Welsh mythology, where the Mabinogion says she placed several curses on one of her sons so that, except under certain conditions, he would not have a name, weaponry, or a wife, but some interpretations of the story regard these curses more as challenges to be overcome so that he would push himself and grow.

Clad in silver armor and blessed with golden hair, Arianrhod has a countenance somewhere between imposing and regal. Her armor has sets of small wings extending from either side of her visor, pauldrons, vambraces, and poleyns.
